I have ubuntu 9.10 freshly installed, and when I go to my ubuntu software center to install applications, there is no install button on the application page. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this?
View 2 RepliesOccasionally, the power off button on the panel goes missing on Ubuntu 10.10 installation. I can't seem to notice any pattern to it. I can shut down from the command line just fine, but how can I get the button back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed lucid on two computers now and have been using or a few months.Overall, it's pretty good and everything just works. However, every now and then (seemingly random), the power button in the indicator appletsion panel widget randomly disappears, so I'm unable to shut down my computer without re-adding the widget, or using the command line to shutdown the computer. Now this is acceptable for me, an advanced user. However, this is not acceptable for my parents and family, who also use ubuntu computers. Today, my mother called me to ask why she couldn't turn off her computer. I was dumbfounded, and had to walk her through turning it off "by hand."
Now this is not me accidentally removing the indicator applet session panel item. No, I can still see the user name bubble with availability information and I can still switch users. It's just that the power button is completely missing (sometimes the place where it used to be is occupied by a corrupt graphic). Additionally, if I login later, the power button magically returns without me having to do anything with regards to the panel. This is disappointing indeed.
Honestly, this is why ubuntu and linux in general still have the reputation they do of being non-user-friendly. At least in windows or mac, when I get fed-up I can turn it off. But not so in ubuntu. No ubuntu tortures me continuously and I marvel that such a simple thing has escaped the minds of such advanced programmers. I wish Canonical would focus on letting us TURN OFF the computer instead of adding crazy features that I'm not going to use. I mean how can a real operating system fail at such a simple task
The menus at the tops of 10.10 have gone? All ive done is update. Sometimes my power off button is missing too?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently had my ubuntu 10.04 updated and lost the show desktop (minimise button usually attached to the desktop panel located at the bottom far left corner of the screen. (The one you click on which minimises all windows and takes you direct to the desktop.
I have tried looking for options in the Appearance and Windows options in Menu-system-preferences but cant find anything, that could be used to enable or disable this feature. Secondly, since upgrading to the current version of Ubuntu I have been missing the volume control button usually located by the date/wireless/ Power off button/ icons on the panel located top right of screen.
My power button icon on the toolbar in Unity is invisible -- that is, it occupies the far right-most column of pixels and displays no icon. (See attached screenshot -- the power button menu only comes up with the mouse all the way to the far right (where you can't really see it in the screencap.)).Any idea how to get it back? It's not a big deal, but it'd be nice to avoid being made fun of by my OS X/Wind0ze-using friends for having an invisible power button.I have Natty installed, but using the same /home (and thus the same config files) from previous installs. Might that be the problem?

Is there a way to get this back? I found you can use CTRL+L or use gconf-editor to switch but I used that button quite a bit and want to find a way to get it back.

Now i added the volume control button by adding "Indicator Applet" from Add to Panel option at tray. But i also tried the following:
"Use Alt+F2 to open the Run Application app, paste gnome-volume-control-applet into the text field, and click the Run button" Then i had two volume control buttons after that i tried to remove the volume button which is came by the command line Not from the Indicator Applet Next i tried the following code in terminal to remove the volume button which was came from command line:
"sudo apt-get purge indicator-sound"
But the wrong thing is the volume button on Indicator Applet was gone I also add the indicator applet but the volume button doesn't coming back with the applet Now i want the Original Volume button along with the applet Not the other button.
i just installed the new ubuntu 11.04 but the top left ubuntu button is missing how do i get it to show up? i already did a reinstall with 2 different isos but still get.

So I build us a scrap PC and installed Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I know that these head banging friends of mine will eventually begin installing a lot of crappy software on it. So I made an Admin account for myself and a restricted one for them.
There might be times when they really need to install something in my absence, so I've decided to make an open Live CD for them to have, so they can have some of their own stuff on it. As you might know, when you boot on this CD you can choose between installing Linux Ubuntu or "trying it" What I want to do is that I want them to use the try- thingy so they wont erase the disk over and over. Of course I can just tell them not to install the actually operative. there's a way to disable the "Install" button in some config file or something Similar.
i figured out how to install openftd with a button that redirects you to an nzbindex in order to download the software. Windows users got openftd with koala ftd search Linux users will get openftd with a similair option. install the ftd4linux repo: as root:[URL]..

i was so happy using the window buttons applet in gnome panel. it was working fine in maximize window , now suddenly i find the close button has vanished i tried to remove and re install, changed theme and all the jugglery within my limits... have absolutely no idea what went wrong, any clue ? to get back the "CLOSE" button ? its funny with just the minimize and restore button visible in maximised mode... its the close button i use most in maximise mode

EDIT: It was because my username had a capital letter in it.
for some reason, my opensuse 11.2 can not shut down as normal. by pressing ctrl-alt-F1 and issuing "init 0", the console displays the following messages and then stops there. Segmentation fault Master Resource control: runlevel 0 has been reached skipped services in runlevel 0: SuSEfirewall2_setup I have to push power button to shut down it.
