Ubuntu :: Title Bar - Minimise And Close Buttons Are Missing?
Feb 24, 2010
After a week or so i noticed that the title bar (the one with the minimise and close buttons) is missing. After a little search i found that in terminal if i type metacity --replace it would come back. And that it did. However, everytime i reboot i need to do it again.Starting to get a little annoying now.
Just recently,on occassion when I log in to my main user, I don't get the Title Bars, or windows minimize, maximize, close buttons.
I have tried changing theme
I have noticed that running the "compiz" command from the main manu will restore the title bars etc, and that my second user (created yesterday) does not have that problem.
Most of these threads relate to missing buttons or moving them to the right side. However, I'd like to know whether it is possible to get the buttons to show normally on the title bar instead of the panel? I think having the buttons on the panel is butt ugly and fairly inconvenient.
I've been using 10.04 for a few months here and installed the truglass 0.5 theme for quite some time. I've been putting up with one downfall of it, which is on certain windows the min/max/close buttons do not show. I can hover over where they should be to actually use them, but they are not visible on all windows. They always come up with firefox, unless I hit a pop-up and a new window comes up. Any nautilus window doesn't have them unless focus on that window is lost. Any ideas on how I can solve this? See attached screenshot.
As title states, they are missing, and from every window. I have googled this and found fixes but in doing some of the "fixes" the bar at the top of the screen disappears and docky becomes effectless.
About a month ago I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and everything seemed fineBut sometime between then and now I lost the maximize and close buttons (I still have the minimize)This is only a minor annoyance for me but a major one for my wife.I searched the web and some other forums but have found no help.
I recently viewed some photos on Flickr in full screen and since then have lost the top bar of Firefox, I have tried some of the ideas listed in a previous post but to no avail I have no .monzilla folder in my home folder is this the problem ? previous post here [URL].. .
Everything worked 100% great untill I change color depth to 16 bits.I do not want 24 Bits, I want 16 Bits. I have good reasons. Never had this problem in Gutsy 7.10 ...I deeply regret in upgrading to 9.10 ...
My video card:
Gforce 7950 GX2
Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars. *Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar. *Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar. *Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars. *Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar. *Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar. *Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
My xorg.conf file:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009 Section "ServerLayout"
I have recently had my ubuntu 10.04 updated and lost the show desktop (minimise button usually attached to the desktop panel located at the bottom far left corner of the screen. (The one you click on which minimises all windows and takes you direct to the desktop.
I have tried looking for options in the Appearance and Windows options in Menu-system-preferences but cant find anything, that could be used to enable or disable this feature. Secondly, since upgrading to the current version of Ubuntu I have been missing the volume control button usually located by the date/wireless/ Power off button/ icons on the panel located top right of screen.
Today upon booting my Xubuntu 9.04, I see that all new windows I open have their title bar missing and on top of my pannel menu. If I try to run windows manager from the menu, nothing shows up on the screen. Therefore I think my windows manager is not running at all. I have no graphic effects and dont want any. I noticed that nothing shows up on the task bar (bottom bar) when I have anything opened up in the desktop. Can't minimize, can't click close button, ...How do I fix this ? I followed a thread to install Compiz and emerald just so I could get it to work but I do not like this option. I do not want any special effects. The more effects/options I have the more possible problems I may get. By the way I also have this problem on my office Ubuntu 10.04. Both started having this problem recently. I suspect it is an update that was done that is causing this.
I had to finally give up Unity because my little netbook was running so slow. However, I loved the global menu because it freed some valuable screen space. In classic, I can't figure out how to get the close/max/min/title into the panel/global menu like it is default in Unity. Is there a way?
I am using GNOME Ubuntu 64 bit Lucid Lynx with Cairo Dock, Compiz Fusion, Screenlets
Sometimes when I start up linux the buttons to close, maximize, and minimize windows and the Application title bar disappear. Restarting usually fixes the problem.
Do you have any ideas why this would happen? Is there a command that will restart gnome without having to restart the computer?
the size of the min, max, close buttons in the corner of firefox. They are very small and I can't find a way to increase them. I've tried different themes but that doesn't work.
The other thing I would like to increase is the size of the tabs. I DON'T WANT TO MAKE THEM LONGER, I WANT TO MAKE THEM TALLER so they are easier to hit when laptop is hooked to TV. Right now they are very short and I use the mouse on the arm of my chair (cloth) and it's a little difficult to hit them.
I've searched and read tips for the past week and none have what I need. They all tell me how to make the tabs longer or shorter and how to add or remove close boxes in the individual tabs. These don't do what I need done. Can these simple things be done in firefox or am I SOL?
The close, minimize, and resize buttons are all on the left side, which I like. But recently I've noticed that the Close and Resize buttons are switched. How can I fix this? Click the picture so you can see it.
all the windows i am trying to open don't show the close, min, max buttons. also, rhythm box and grooveshark (inside of chrome) won't play audio, i click play and the progress bar in the playing stays at zero. however audio in runescape works so its not the audio card...
after i udated to ubuntu 10.04LTS, i applied updates one night and after reboot the minimize, maximize and close buttons had moved from the upper right corner of ALL windows to the upper left corner. i would like to move them back to the original location but don't know where or which config file to look in.
I have just gotten back into Ubuntu and installed 11.04. However I happen to see alot of issues with this. Trying to run compiz and all bejesus is breaking loose on me here. The biggest frustrating one is this new desktop, after searching I found how to go back to old school way I use to use it.So, now I get into this desktop, start compiz after the other desktop totally barfed on me, this one is doing the same as well.I lost all of my little boxs at top to close minimize and expand the windows.
Seriously, they took something and turned it into this just so ppl quit complaining about moving from windows to this. I for one dont like it and it doesnt work right with nothing,(Sounds like windows ughh) very hard to navigate, where you think one thing is suppose to be and they totally moved it, took me half of yesterday to get my wifi working but only after I went back to old desktop, video wasnt working properly, only after I went back to old desktop.
Some how I managed to get rid of this buttons. I tryed to write ?sudo aptitude purge ubuntu-desktop && sudo aptitude clean && sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop && sudo /etc/init.d/gdm? in terminal, and then restarted my laptop. There is still no effect I wrote ?metacity? in terminal and I got this message ?Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager. So how should I fix this problem.
After I completed the upgrade to Lucid, my maximize, minimize, and close buttons disappeared. I looked around on the forums and i didn't see any other posts about this problem. I'm sorry if i might have over looked one though. Anyways, the buttons are not on the left or the right, they just don't show up. I tried messing with the theme settings and I also tried some of the things that were recommended on the main sticky about bugs with Lucid, and i still don't have them. Dose anyone know how to fix this or will it fix itself with updates?
I have ubuntu 10.04 and installed a theme that I really love. However, this theme puts the buttons in the top-right corner of the window (close, minimize, maximize) is there any way to move them back to the left?
The close, minimise and restore/maximise buttons are randomly gone! Its kinda irritating, it seems to consistently happen with Open Office word processor. So is there anything i can do about this?
How do I get the close minimize maximize buttons back on the right? I looked in appearance, and all of the little previews of the themes have them on the right, but they are on the left when I apply them. Is there any way to change them back? this is very frustrating.
1. How do I put the minimize, maximize & close buttons back on the right side?
2. everytime I leave my PC for about 5 mins and come back the screen is locked, this is very annoying and pointless as I have a desktop. How/where can I set it to never lock screen when idle?
I dont want the buttons at the right side, as in windows, I liked them at the left, but when I choose GTK in compiz fusion, they go to the right side as in windows, they only work at the left side using emerald, but no with GTK, someone can help me to keep the buttons at the left?, I dont know why they have changed to right side.
When ubuntu decided to move the close minimize maximize buttons to the left side, then here is your solution! i wrote this little script to help:
just go to your terminal and type this: (replacing /where/you/put/it/ with where you actually put the file) "sh /where/you/put/it/MoveButtonsToRight.sh"
