I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 recently. I used kpowersave in 9.10 which allowed me to control the cpu and made my notebook run on battery for more than 3 hours again.
In 10.04 kpowersave has disappeared - or is unsupported? How can I control the CPU-speed, even when plugged-in? I want it to run normally on low speed (fan does not blow) and high-speed, when I really need it.
Is there a replacement for kpowersave in Sid or Squeeze, I want to my monitor to blank 120 min, not ever 5 or 10 min.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed kmilo, modprobed nvram and added line: KERNEL=="nvram", MODE="0666", GROUP="nvram" to 91-permissions.rules. I used command addgroup nvram and add me ( user tomasso ) to nvram group. Kmilo works fine but I am not able to change brightness of my laptop in kpowersave or by using fn key on my laptop keyboard. I am in powerdev group too.

"sudo ./setup_sdcard.sh --mmc /dev/sdX --uboot beagle"
It gives me a error sayings Dependencies are missing.
"Missing pv.Your System is Missing some dependencies
Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt-get install uboot-mkimage wget pv dosfstools btrfs-tools parted"
And when I enter the that above in terminal I get the following error.
Unable to locate PV.
How to properly integrate these RPMs into our system?
Option 1: we could take those missing OS RPMs and install them?
Option 2: can we package the missing files from missing OS RPMs into the existing Linux-xxx.rpm?
I made the mistake of installing e16 window manager from the synaptic. I logged out and logged into e16 for a session. I logged out and logged back into gnome but it seemed gnome and e16 were both running at the same time. I couldn't figure out what had gone wrong so I killed X and ran "sudo apt-get remove e16" when I logged back in all the windows had no bar at the top.

It says ylmf os but it's just ubuntu 10.4 with a theme installed by default. I tried restarting the computer but it makes no difference.
When I try and run a Java applet on Firefox, is says additional plugins are required, then it says Java already installed. I upgraded to 3.6 by extracting the firefox-3.6.tar.bz2 to it's own directory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing 10.10 I was asked to do a partial upgrade. During this upgrade several packages relating to the U1 service were removed.
I now do not have the U1 client, nor the Music Store service in Rhythmbox.
So, onto my question. I kind of messed up my desktop computer trying to remove Ubuntu 8.10. I had installed 8.10 as a dual boot with Windows XP a few years back and now wanted to remove it mainly because of my mother, who can BARELY even turn a computer on. Plus, I can't connect to the internet anyway with Ubuntu (I need the Netzero dial up application in windows, since all I have right now is dial up).
Here's what I did. I downloaded the program "MBRFIX" so I could directly fix the mbr inside of Windows XP, since I don't have an XP recovery disc. I downloaded MBRFIX because I needed to get rid of GRUB. I fixed the mbr, and Windows XP directly booted. All was said and good, except Ubuntu still existed. I poked around on the internet and found something that said for me to use the Ubuntu Live CD and go to gpartition. It said to delete the Ubuntu partitions. So, I tried that, but it said something about unmounting something (I honestly don't remember what it said).
So, I continued following instructions. It said if you couldn't delete the partitions, to go to the terminal and type in "sudo swapoff" and then "sudo umount -a". So I did that. A bunch of stuff popped up in the terminal, mainly stuff that said "cannot unmount". I tried to delete the partitions once again, but that still failed. Finally, I just went back to Windows XP. I went to my computer, manage, and deleted the Ubuntu partitions from there. Finally, Ubuntu was gone! Of course, I wanted my 50GB space back on my XP, but I still had no clue how to go about putting that back. ........
Just tried to run an apt-get update on my 8.10 Ibex server and got lots of errors about missing Packages.gz files. Checking the archive site [URL] shows that all Intrepid directories are missing!

This is probably a really simple fix but tbh since I installed unity I'm stumped.
I didnt like the unity desktop so I've gone back to the classic desktop but I have no bar above my windows with the max/min/close option.
To add to that issue, sometimes windows open with their menus under the panel at the top of the screen so there is no way to move or close them
after upgrade my ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 all my panel bar gone..now my desktop is blank like a piece of paper.

I have created 2 files and put them in a folder in ubuntu 11.04 64bit. The partition is ntfs and is shared b/w ubuntu and win7. The partition doesnot have win7 installed on it, win7 ubuntu and data partition are three seprate partitions of a disk. when i logged in win7 the files and folder newly created were missing. then i logged back in ubuntu and they were missing from there to.
I have edited /etc/fstab =>

UUID=C8E8EC38E8EC2682 /media/data ntfs auto 0 1"
so that the partition mounts itself at boot up, thats it I do not specifically unmount it, i just shutdown the pc normally. also win7 is hibernated, but its on sda0 its a different partition.
After installing ubuntu 10.4, my cd drive is not opening.Even in reboot the drive is not opening and the green led is not blinking.sys conf:lenovo 3000 g400, intel pentium dual core, 32 bit,1GB ram.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I've been reinstalling OSes quite a bit lately, mostly Linux distros. I decided I wanted to play a game that I had that only worked in XP, so I cleared a partition for it and installed it there. I figured I'd be able to reinstall GRUB2 later and get back into my Ubuntu install - and even if I couldn't, my home folder was stored in a separate partition so it wouldn't be lost...
...well whoops, that was a mistake. When I booted up the live CD, GParted showed that entire hard disk as unallocated space. Disk Utility's output shows everything but the Ext4 partitions (and displays some ridiculously large amount of unallocated space near the end). Fdisk gives me this: code...
From what I've read while searching about this, the Windows install screwed up my partition table... but I haven't yet figured out how to fix this. My two Ext4 partitions are missing (though my one Ext3 partition is still there)... does anyone have any advice?
I can still read my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) in the terminal, but not through file managers, and the partition where my home folder was stored is just missing altogether - exactly the opposite of what I intended when I created it. =/
I have a My book usb drive that in the provious install would show up with a My book icon as a "drive" on my desk top, in PLaces it shows as a blank icon.. for some reason the icon does not appear on my desktop, like normal, examples plug in ipod, ipod icon shows up, usb mini drive, that shows up?Also this could be related .. but my Pidgen icon on the tack bar does not show anymore... it used to be that I opened it and a little green icon sat by the clock?

For example, the main menu of gedit with File, Edit, Help etc is just not there. I usually keep the menu hidden in the terminal, but checking the 'Show Menubar' option doesnt bring it back. Rhythmbox as well.
I have "Banshee" installed and use as an MP3 ripper (& Tag editor) and also use "Easy tag" to add cover art to id3tag data.The problem I have is Banshee detects all the mp3 id3tag info including the manually added cover art (Added by Easy tag).However when the music is dragged and dropped to my Sansa Fuze Mp3 player the cover art is not displayed (although it does support it and works with windows equivalents)
PS: I am trying to use Ubuntu as main system, I would use Ogg Vorbis but I have heard it doesn't support cover art at all.
I have been experimenting with Ubuntu and created a folder a couple of days ago, and messed around with the permissions so that only 2 of us had access to the folder. Must point out that i am a newbie to Linux... so in all likelihood, I screwed it up. Today when i went to search for the folder, it seems to have vanished i tried searching for it, but came up with nothing, i even searched for some of the documents that i have in that folder, and also came up with nothing.
