Just tried to run an apt-get update on my 8.10 Ibex server and got lots of errors about missing Packages.gz files. Checking the archive site [URL] shows that all Intrepid directories are missing!
View 6 RepliesI'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.
So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS
Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 last night. I noticed most of my effects were missing so I tried to put them back on. This didn't work so I disabled the effects. Then, my panel at the top and the Launcher is missing. .How do I get these back?

"sudo ./setup_sdcard.sh --mmc /dev/sdX --uboot beagle"
It gives me a error sayings Dependencies are missing.
"Missing pv.Your System is Missing some dependencies
Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt-get install uboot-mkimage wget pv dosfstools btrfs-tools parted"
And when I enter the that above in terminal I get the following error.
Unable to locate PV.
Would like to download Dapper and Breezy. Where are the archives located?

I have the .tar.gz file of old version. How can I install that? How do I run in terminal ?

Trying to get the thunderbird localization working I briefly checked thunderbird 3, to see if it had the same issue. Now, the problem is, I accidentally installed new versions of Firefox 3.5 and XULrunner. If I remove them, then many other packets get removes due to dependencies. Same if I try to force version. If I simply remove the repos, then synaptic reports them as broken. Is there anything I can do to solve this? How stable are the updated versions? How often do they get updated?

I'd like to put Sabayon 5.2 onto a 2GB USB pen in order to install on a PC. However when I opened UNetbootin I noticed the highest version for Sabayon was 4 [picture attached]. Is it worth trying? Otherwise what is the best alternative to UNetbootin?

1) in 32-bit Fx 3.5+ and 64-bit Fx 3.6+
2) only in 32-bit Fx 3.5+ (and 64-bit nigthly builds)
3) in both 32- and 64-bit Fx 3.5+ etc. I've heard that to run TM one has to have the entry javascript.options.jit.content set to true - I have this entry and it is set to true by default (and I use 64-bit Fx 3.5).
I've found lots of posts about reinstalling applications when they're already installed but I'd like to install Mediawiki v1.14, instead of the current v1.15, in order to replicate an older Windows implementation of Mediawiki. I've installed Ubuntu desktop 10.04 and Synaptic offers me only v1.15 of Mediawiki. So can I use Synatpic or the Ubuntu Software Center to obtain this slightly old version 1.14 of Mediawiki? If I use Synaptic to obtain v1.14, will it also provide the additional packages (Apache, PHP, MySql etc.,) in the same way that it would for v1.15?

Should I just use Update Manager? It is currently offering me 9.04, for example, does that mean I will need to upgrade through each version a step at a time, or can I jump some versions?
I'd like to set my comp up to dual boot with lucid and the maverick alpha. Currently I have lucid with a separate home partition. Is it possible to have both instances of ubuntu using the same home partition? or will this corrupt it in some way?

A while back I installed 2.6.32rc6 when I first upgraded to 9.04, because it solved issues I was having with surround sound. A few months back I installed mythtv and the mythbuntu binaries as well, although I have since uninstalled them. All of a sudden, I seemed to have issues booting into ubuntu with certain versions of the kernel, where it would just freeze at the white ubuntu logo, while other versions of the kernel would load fine (I think 2.6.31?) but it would display the mythbuntu logo instead (not sure if this is related).
I just upgraded to 10.04, and I still seem to have issues booting with certain kernel versions. Right now I'm running 2.6.32-020632rc6-generic which seems to work, but it's outdated, and I have surround sound issues again. Which one should I be using? Is there a way to clean this mess up? How do I fix the problem of freezing at the boot screen?
I'm using latest Ubuntu version 10.10 and I want to try Firefox Beta, but don't want to replace the one I;m using now which is 3.6.13.
I have downloaded Firefox 4 Beta andd extacted file to a /Home Folder/(My username)/Firefox 4 (Beta)/
and I wen to that folder and clicked on the Firefox link bu version 3.6.13 came up. in another window. Do I have to close Firefox ad re open it or do I have to do something else?
I have installed GCC 4.5.1 using senaptic. But typing gcc in any terminal still calls the older version of gcc. I see that in /usr/bin gcc is a link to the older gcc. Would it be OK to replace that link with the new one poiting to the newer version of GCC?

But there was an update that Ubuntu did on the system, and now when my pc boots, I have 2 series ( 2 times Ubuntu, 2 times Ubunti safemode, 2 times memory test, 2 times memory test safemode) of choices for Ubuntu and one for windows 7.

I tried the USB install a countless amount of times, and I tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 to 11.04, but it never worked. I finally installing it from Windows by the wubi installer, and now it works perfectly.
What I want to do now is remove 10.04, as well as GRUB. GRUB first comes up, and I select my Windows partition. Then I choose Ubuntu to load, and then another GRUB comes up. how do I remove 10.04, as well as make loading Ubuntu more simple?
I've just done an upgrade install from Maverick to Natty, and noticed (while poking about in Synaptic) that version 4.4 of g++ was installed alongside 4.5. (Further investigation revealed that this was the case for both gcc and gcj as well.)
If anyone here installed Natty from scratch, could they look in Synaptic and tell me if both versions come installed by default? Or can I assume the presence of 4.4 is simply because it was installed under Maverick and get rid of it?
I'm using the "Ubuntu Classic" interface (i.e. Gnome) and admit that I don't know if it's possible to get the required information from Unity's "Ubuntu Software Centre".
I did "uname -a" and it's showing that I'm using 2.6.31-16-generic of the Linux Kernel. Now, in the GRUB2 boot menu, it's showing
2.6.31-14-generic & recovery
2.6.31-15-generic & recovery
and the current one: 2.6.31-16-generic & recovery.
I would like to remove the old ones because of the pileup they're creating.
Other info: I have wXP pro as my dualboot OS.
I have a dual boot desktop with WinXP on C: and Ubuntu on D:. GRUB 2 handles the start-up. Having installed multiple updates to Ubuntu, my GRUB menu now lists:
2.5.31-19-generic
2.5.31-17-generic
2.5.31-16-generic
2.5.31-15-generic
2.5.31-14-generic
and (recovery mode) for each of the above, along with the mem test and WinXP.Is there any reason I need to list all these variants of Ubuntu? If not, can I simply edit them from the GRUB config file or must I do something else to actually uninstall them?
My installatio with 250mg root partition is nealy full after an updrade of linux-generic which has kept the old kernel and modules.
I can easily delete them or is the a way to instruct apt-get or dpkg to only keep the current version?

I am not sure if this is the right section to ask this question (sorry if it isnt). Anyway, I want to build and install 3 different softwares:OpenCV, Player, Stage. These are required for my school projects and research etc. Now, I need to install them in this manner:
Opencv-2.0.0, player-2.1.3 and stage-2.1.1 and Opencv-2.1.0, player-3.0.1 and stage-3.2.2
The reason for this is, these are the sets of versions that talk to each other without problems. And I need the older versions for a project that I'm currently working on and its always nice to have the newest version installed on the system. If its only a single version install, its pretty easy and I can do it.Since I want to install multiple versions of the same software I could use some help. I am not sure whether I can install all of the them in the default directory (/usr/local/). So, I can set up a separate directory on my home folder. But thats as far as I've gotten to. I am particularly concerned whether one version would break another. Is there anything that I can do to avoid this?
I'm sorry if this is recurring subject, but I have searched the forum for such a subject and can't find one.I'm using Xubuntu 8.10, I'd like to update my programs to the latest releases, but the available updates in 8.10 versions are not the newest ones. I can't upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu due to some known issues with older Intel drivers.
Is it possible to have the latest updates of packages while I still using 8.10 version?
