Ubuntu :: Titlebars Missing In All GTK Applications?
Mar 2, 2010
I actually have no idea what the cause of this problem could be, but all my GTK programs don't display a menubar O.o
For example, the main menu of gedit with File, Edit, Help etc is just not there. I usually keep the menu hidden in the terminal, but checking the 'Show Menubar' option doesnt bring it back. Rhythmbox as well.

I'm a relatively new Ubuntu user, came on board a month ago and loving it.
Anyways, I was running 9.10 all fine and dandy with basically no bugs or glitches, but after installing 10.04RC I've noticed a few things.
1.
Whenever the computer boots up, I don't get any nice loading screens. After I get through my normal BIOS screens and the GRUB loader, my screen goes black like its doing something. Then it flickers and I see all this garbled green and blue dots at the top for 10 seconds or so. Then my desktop appears. That process dosn't seem right. I'd expect a loading screen of some sort and that garbled dots is unsettling.
2.
Docky seems a bit buggy. It wouldn't autostart at first, even though "auto-start" was enabled in the settings. I had to disable auto-start. Reboot. Re-enable autostart. Reboot. Now it starts on bootup.
2a. Also, docky seems to randomly kill itself every so often. I have to restart it
3.
My bookmark bar in Google Chrome seems to have a narrower band of highlighted text than it used to. Before there was a bit of extra room on the top and bottom, and the icons were larger than the text next to them. Now the icons seem cropped on the top and bottom, and when hovering over the link, only the highlighting only matches the maximum text height, when it should be larger.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues or if they know of any fix. Nothing super major, just minor inconveniences.
4.
My windows intermittently appear without titlebars. On startup, sometimes I have to manually reload Compiz window manager to get them back. Other times it seems to be fine

After upgrading from 9.10 karmic to 10.04 lucid, the windows of applications have no titlebars and I cannot move or resize them. Also if I have System, Preferences, Apprearance, Visual Effects, set to normal or extra the settings are lost after a logout/in or reboot. I have another user login and the Vishual Effects settings are remembered with it, but with my main more priviledged user, they are not. I sort of got around the problem by adding compiz to Startup Applications, but that only allows the Titlebars to show at at Normal or Extra settings in Appearance, Vishual Effects. It is reset to Normal or Extra when I select None before logging out/in. Should there be a part of compiz that starts even when none Vishual Effects is selected? (to show titlebars etc) Where is the configuration file that is meant to start compiz per user? I don't think Startup Applications settings properly deal with it.

I just installed 10.04 and configured my Radeon 5570 to span my desktop across a pair of identical1600 x 1200 monitorsng the proprietary drivers (and Catalyst Control Center)After doing this I seem to have lost my previous panel configurations that included the Software, Administration and Preferences menu from previous desktop configuration.I am attempting to add the menus back but I cannot find an option to actually "add a menu"... only icon shortcuts to specific applications/utilities

I'm finding that some applications (2 thus far) are not properly displaying text. I first noticed it in Firefox, where it appears that NO text is being rendered because the search and "feeling lucky" buttons are both about 1.5 characters wide and blank inside. I'll include screen-caps below to exemplify what I mean. In addition to Firefox, I just tonight noticed that my PDF reader is apparently rendering all text in white (even though the same PDF opens up fine with black text on my Windows desktop computer). For the PDF's, I can see that there is text there because I can do a Ctrl+A and copy, and then when I paste it into gedit I can see all the text.
Some background: I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit w/gnome. The first thing I did after installing Ubuntu was to install the BlackBuntu theme by copying appropriate files from /usr/share/ from the BlackBuntu live USB.
What I've tried: I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox a couple of times, but ultimately I just installed Chromium which is working fine and is not experiencing the same issue that Firefox is. I've tried changing my theme back to default, changing all the fonts (under Appearance Preferences), and nothing is fixing this. I'm about to just do a full reinstall of the OS, paying careful attention to at exactly what point in my process everything gets screwed up, but I'm hoping that someone has an idea that I can try before I have to reinstall the system.

I run a OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with Gnome & KDE desktop. When I run my Gnome desktop all my KDE applications are missing their usr/share/icons/hicolor/48*48/apps/nameofapplication.png picture. The KDE applications work, and when I go to that destination file the png. picture is present. When I run a KDE environment, my KDE applications (that are missing in Gnome) have their icon 48*48 picture. Any idea why when running the Gnome environment, there is a missing path to the png. file for only the KDE applications?

I decided to switch from chrome back to iceweasel as my default browser. However, when I try to do that (as I used to) via Details -> Default Applications -> Web, iceweasel is not listed as choice.I tried to do it then from the shell with
Code: Select allupdate-alternatives --config x-www-browser
update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
At least out of evolution or thunderbird, still chrome is opened when clicking on a link.

well i suppose this makes the problem ever more complex because i'm acutally attempting to make a cross compile tool chain from amd64 to arm.i've successfully built binutils and configured the kernel headers. now i'm stuck on gcci'm running Code: sudo make -j 4 when i get the issue (the -j 4 if you don't know helps speed up the process considerably by using more threads)
anyways it tells me: Code: make[2]: Entering directory `/home/alex/tmp/gcc-4.4.5/arm-linux/libgcc'
Makefile:143: ../.././gcc/libgcc.mvars: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `../.././gcc/libgcc.mvars'. Stop.

=> "Automatically remember running applications when logging out" is no longer existing because of bugs with multiple sessions. Is there a way to enforce this option, even if it is bugged with multiple sessions? My system has only 1 user and I miss so much this feature.

Only "Favourites", "Run Command" and "Leave" is shown on the classic KDE menu, same thing when switching to Launcher Menu Style. Missing Applications and everything else. File associations is not working. Double clicking any type of file it asks to install the program and the known applications menu is empty.
I tried to add a new user, same problem with that. I also noticed that when running Chrome it asks to be the default web browser each time even when I say yes.
I have not been messing with anything, I suspect it happened during a update, but I got the exact same repositories on 2 other x64 machines where there is no problem.
I'm using KDE 4.6.0 from the factory repository.
I tried to reinstall some KDE4 packages without any luck.
I do not want to reinstall the entire system or downgrade KDE.

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

I get to my specific problem, I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a Playstation 3 (PPC). I am attempting to install "Qemu-launcher".
1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."
5. Found and downloaded "qemu-kvm-0.11.0~rc1.orig.tar.gz". Extracted archive.

This is a real newb's question. I can't get to my files on a NAS once I'm in an application.ExampleI have a text/graphic file to open from the NAS. I can see it in Nautilus, and can double-click there to open in OpenOffice/Gedit/Gimp. Once I'm working I want to open another file so in my application I go File > OpenFrom there I can't see the NAS. (Interestingly I can see a locally-connected USB hdd).Do I really have to go through Nautilus every time I want to open something from the NAS?
