I am trying to make a script which will analyze jpeg images taken from a webcam. i can get a image easily enough but i can't figure out a way to get the images average brightness as a number.

I have installed jpeg-8b package, applications installed by it work, but not "system-wide" support for jpeg. Eg. I can use "cjpeg", but Eye of Gnome (image viewer) gives me "Unrecognized image file format" error.
Could you please point me to some right solution? Where does Debian look for this library?

My webcam requires it (IIRC it is a creative webcam ... if anybody requires details I can pull it out of my basement).I am comfortable with command-line, however I would prefer not to compile the source code (I am not familiar with compiling kernel modules )

It must be done via console command on Linux.
I have a very big image directory: One image per minute, whole a year, captured from a webcam. Now I want to make a video (15 or 24FPS) with all the webcam captures, to see how it changed during this period. I've tried automotion, but it makes a very low quality video, besides it blocks with lots of images. I've also tried dvd-slideshow, but it's not possible to make a more-than-1FPS video.
I also need to change the date in each webcam's images, because they are wrong, so it needed to overlay a little layout with the right date for each image, is that possible to manage within some application? Preferibly shell applications which supports lots of Gb of information (anyway I always could make little videos and then glue them)
I was just wondering if there is a way (and seeing as how this is Linux we are talking about here, there probably is...) to make a fully functional webcam-server on Ubuntu 10.04.2 save images daily, or weekly? I am on Ubuntu Lucid (updated till date). I am using Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic Recently I am not being able to run Cheese (webcam tool). When run it is crashing. Upon starting it from prompt I noticed the following error : libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits The program 'cheese' received an X Window System error. I have never actually used photolapse but it seems to be the software I am looking for, only problem is that it's for windows. So I've installed Wine and downloaded the photolapse.exe anyway but it won't open with wine so I don't know if that because it's not compatible? Or because I've done something wrong? I'd really appreciate it if someone could recommend a programme similar to photolapse that works in ubuntu or if someone could help me get photolapse working through wine.

In windows it is a program called Manycam that allows the user to play it in the background and makes the webcam gray-scale over all. Is there an equivalence to Manycam for Ubuntu?

If I open a shell and start firefox from there (as a regular user), webcam will work ok. If I start Firefox from the top bar, it will NOT work. I checked preferences and it does not seem to do anything weird anybody has a clue? It seems weird to have that pretty top toolbar and not be able to use it.
I've browsed the forums on how to make the Logitech Quickcam Messenger webcam work. I have a lot of RAR files and ISO. Is there a program like Winrar which could open them in Linux? Cause now it only opens zip files . Also I would like to know what the best package manager is (I mean the easiest -used to use the Software Manager in Mint 9 Xfce).At last I would like to know if there is a good program to make disk images to reset the system.

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.
Does anybody know an application that sums up the printing from the page_log file and puts the summed amounts in another simple text file? Tried phpPrintAnalyzer but could not figure out how to set it up.
