Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Make Webcam Gray-scale
May 19, 2011
I want my webcam to be gray-scale when I use it in Skype and with other programs. I know I can make it gray-scale with Cheese, but that is only with that program. In windows it is a program called Manycam that allows the user to play it in the background and makes the webcam gray-scale over all. Is there an equivalence to Manycam for Ubuntu?

I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.

I want to make an 8-bit looking image that has very large pixels. My solution was to make a 50x50 image, zoom in, draw it with the 1x1 pixel pencil tool, and then scale it to whatever size i want.Everything went well except, when i try to scale it the anti-aliasing kicks in and blurs everything. Is there a way that i can disable anti-aliasing?

When I run large rsync sessions (backup purposes), I often find that the cpu goes up to 100% on both cores, and the systems gets almost unusable as slow it is. Top reveals around 80% is reported as "wa", which is IO Wait right?
Well, using the CPUfreq applet, it is possible (but irritatingly sloow) to manually set the cpu frequency to the highest possible. After this the computer gets much more snappy. How can this be done without manual intervention, anyone knows?

Today I wanted to make my webcam work in a flash chat. I added myself to the video group and added export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so to my ~/.basrc file Then I loggued in again... and the problem is:
If I open a shell and start firefox from there (as a regular user), webcam will work ok. If I start Firefox from the top bar, it will NOT work. I checked preferences and it does not seem to do anything weird anybody has a clue? It seems weird to have that pretty top toolbar and not be able to use it.

I've browsed the forums on how to make the Logitech Quickcam Messenger webcam work. The problem I am running into is that the one and only website that seems to have the patch is[URL]...This website seems to be defunct. So does anyone have this patchfile or know where I can find it? Or some other option or work around?

I'm trying to make a webcam work on my Slitaz 2.0.
SysInfo :
Kernel 2.6.25
Busybox
I tested the webcam on my Mandriva 2010 and it works just fine with UVCvideo so i decided to compile UVCVideo for the slitaz Kernel.
I downloaded the files, then uncompressed them. I cheched my kernel source and gcc,make,.... utilities. Then I typed make and ....
There was an error with an ln command in v4l/Makefile in the following line:
Code:
links::
@echo creating symbolic links...
@find ../linux/drivers/media -name '*.[ch]' -type f -print0 | xargs -0n 255 ln -sf --target-directory=.

I have a Dell laptop studio 1735 with a integrated webcam. The webcam seems to be recognised without issue:
1) dmesg | grep Webcam
Code:
Product: Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2M
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2M (0c45:63fa)
input: Laptop_Integrated_Webcam_2M as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb2/2-5/2-5:1.0/input/input13
And in the Hardware Info applet I found the following:
Code:
: USB 00.0: 0000 Unclassified device
[Created at usb.122]
Unique ID: +rmv.ZLiQYW8YBnE
[code]....
The manifacturer is:
manufacturer = "SONiX Technology Inc."
Do I have to install a special application? Or edit a configuration file in order to make it work?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine, all went well. It found an update straight away for my system and it was the Nvidia driver so I installed. However the bar at the top & bottom of my desktop is Grey and not Black like it should be, I've tried applying the "Ambience theme" again in Appearance Preferences but it just stays the same.

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu 10.10 from Vista. I work from home and do all of my work via remote login and video conferencing through Skype. In Vista, I could use my DV Camcorder as a webcam which, in turn, gave me video for Skype. In Vista, I used a program call "Tracker Cam" which I could run, and then it would act like a video driver for Skype and presto, I had perfect video in Skype.
Now that I am in Ubuntu, I am trying to achieve the same thing. I can hook up my DV Camcorder (A Sony Handycam HDR-HC5) and see the live video through Kino. However, this doesn't help me with Skype. I still can't enable video, or select a video device in Skype. I have Googled this up and down with no leads.
So, I am wondering if anyone has done this with Skype (or other programs) to get their DV Camcorders acting like webcams for video calls or is this just one of those things that won't work in Ubuntu?

I am really hoping this is an easy fix. Somehow, on my gnome desktop, my panels overlapped one another. I was dragging and dropping files into folders and unintentionally grabbed the smaller bar and dragged it over my larger application bar.Now, when I rebooted, all I see is my desktop. I don't use icons so I have none of those. The panels are completely gray. every once in a while I will see my trash bin flashing. I am unable to right click the desktop and I am unable to use Alt+F2 for my term.I can still use CTRL+ALT+ F1,F2,F3,F4... to get my non GUI terms. I have tried killall gnome-panelstill nothing.
This is a little... odd to me... a simple click renders an entire OS useless. I would really like to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling because that would just be something you would do with a microsoft product.Edit: Everyone in a while I can right click the desktop and I get the provided menu but that does nothing for me. Also, my hard drive is constantly 'thinking' I am assuming it is stuck trying to complete the gnome environment settings... I am not sure. Oh, I have also tried removing gnome-panel and ubuntu-desktop and reinstalling those.

First things first:
Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit, 2 gigs ram, Firefox 3.6.10
I looked around here and only found some, "it could be this or that" type answers from a year or 2 ago, so here's my question.
Does anyone have a definite answer yet, as to why firefox randomly freezes up/turns gray and doesn't respond? It seems to be more like after I've had it open for a good length of time. And seemingly when I use the auto scroll.

purchased a webcam to record videos with in Ubuntu. I plugged it into the USB slot (and audio into the mic hole) and it seems to work ok. But I'd like to record a video from it and save it to a file. How can this be done?I tried Cheese and no audio was recorded.I tried GUVCView and it was fine except for slow video & audio delay.I can't find any other programs for recording webcams on Linux.

I'm using Wubi to dual boot 9.10 off windows xp. I have been having very good luck figuring things out using this ubuntu forum, which I am more grateful for than any of you could ever imagine, But I have a webcam issue I just can't figure out. Heres my question. I just recently bought a VERY cheap usb webcam from a company named HDE. There doesn't seem to be a specific name or even model number for this webcam, but here is the web page of the webcam I bought, http://www.hdeshop.com/USB-3-LED-PC-...B0015TJNEY.htm The website only provides drivers for windows vista and windows xp, but I figured there might be a chance or possibility that I could force this webcam to work on ubuntu 9.10. I plugged in the webcam and it did show up in skype, but the picture is all green and there is a double of me.
Plus, the actual webcam device will not show up in skype, I can't select the webcam, but regardless it still shows a green double vision image when I test it or do a video call.Skype seems to be the only thing this webcam kind of works with, It will not work with Cheese though and doesn't show an image in gstreamer. I want to mention that when I go to Cheese Preferences there is a webcam device that appears and sayse "USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0)" but I can't select it. I'm not sure what to do about this or how to fix it? I've searched around the internet and read the ubuntu documentation on webcams but really haven't had any luck for my specific webcam. I would just like the webcam to be detected by ubuntu 9.10, to work properly in skype, and work in cheese so I can record video's.
