Recently I have started looking into squashfs filesystems which are used by many LiveCDs. I see that the Debian Live Project also has a squashfs image of their LiveCD. I am wondering how to use that squashfs image to make a bootable USB LiveCD?
View 1 RepliesI've just created a bootdisk (ssd) with multiples Squasfs images I can choose to boot at the Grub2 menu.No I tried to put the sqfs-images into a ramdisk. Therefore I edited the script '/usr/share/initramfstools/ scripts/ casper'. I used the 'dirty hacks'in the ubuntuforums.org/boottoram howto but I suited them for my needs.Now the Systems stops after the kernel and doesn't find a root system.
The sqfs-image without the modification of the 'casper'-script still boots but doesn't load into ram completely.
I have a problem, I'm trying to make my own LiveCD, but I can't mount compressed SquashFS file system. Here I give you my limited LiveCD version... If somebody would take a look [URL]

I need to apply a squashfs-lzma patch (squashfs 4.1cvs) to the liquorix kernel source which is already patched with squashfs 4.0.
how would I do that?I tried googling got this. url

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an app for Linux that creates bootable images. Back when I used windows, I used Imgburn. Now, I need an app like that for Linux. Wherever I looked online, I saw either one (or both) of these ideas.
1. Run Imgburn under wine
2. Get k3b
I don't like using wine because the programs run very slow. I'm not sure exactly how to get k3b to produce a bootable image. So that's where I'm stuck.
I am thinking of using flash drives to boot linux image files instead of iso files. I remember reading in the past that booting off USB flash drives were sometimes problematic -- and I don't know if they're still are. I want to know from your personal experience what type and brand of flash drive has work for you in creating a bootable flash image.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation
I have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.
Is it possible to install GRUB in the MBR of the only bootable disk in the system, but load configuration and images from another disk?Basically I want to install GRUB on /dev/sda, but menu and images will be under /dev/sdb2.Note: /dev/sdb is not bootable.
