Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Booting - Automatically Boot To The Gdm/desktop After Updated Gpu Driver?

Oct 11, 2010

Hey everyone I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux so please bear with me . I recently installed 10.10 on my new htpc. The initial install went great, until I went to install the updated driver for my graphics card. What I did was I downloaded the driver off of nvidia. Then I did these steps:

1. ctrl-alt-f1

2. logged in

3. sudo services gdm stop

4. I then located the driver package that I downloaded and ran it, it seemed to install fine (except for an error about some install script? but it let me proceed)

5. sudo services gdm start

It went to the gdm/ubuntu desktop. However I then connected it via HDMI, and the resolution was way off (top bar was not even displayed on TV) and I tried many different settings but no luck in fixing it. Next after restarting it did not automatically boot to the gdm/desktop. Instead it stayed at the command line login (the ctrl-alt-f1 screen).

tl;dr : 1. How to make it automatically boot to the gdm/desktop after I updated my gpu driver

2. How to fix the resolution for HDMI from my gpu to my TV. (DVI works fine

What is the best place to get an updated nVidia video driver for CentOS 5.5? Is there a CentOS package available that will update it? Or is it best to download it directly from nVidia? Also, I do not have an internet connection on the machine, so it will have to be a manual download and installation.

Once the kernel was updated to 2.6.33 the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which I had activated through systems -> administration -> hardware drivers is now inactive and will not work. systems -> administration -> hardware drivers says to look in /var/log/jockey.log, here is the last part of that file [URL]. PLEASE HELP OUT. I hate using the Mac os on the other partition.

Hardware :: NVIDIA 8800 GTS - Dual Boot Fedora 10 Does Not See The NVIDIA Driver

Feb 5, 2009

I am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.

Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.

I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.

Here are my specs:

CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W

It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.

I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.

Ubuntu Installation :: Updated NVidia Drivers Cause - Sound Got All Fuzzy/scratchy

Jun 2, 2010

I just installed 10.04 (64 bit, in case that matters) last night. I have onboard sound and video, and they working fine until I installed the proprietary drivers for my video card. When this happened, my sound got all fuzzy/scratchy. I can go back into the Hardware Drivers and remove the proprietary ones and then the sound is fine. My problem is that I want to use better drivers for my video, but not at the sacrifice of sound quality. I went to the nVidia site, and they have drivers from April 24, 2010 on there, but there's a couple problems with that. I don't know if they are any different than the ones I already installed through Ubuntu, and I don't know if they will cause the same issue. Since I'm fairly new to linux, installing the drivers from the .run file seems like more of an undertaking than I want to do right now, and I don't want to mess anything up and not be able to revert my changes. With the Hardware Drivers utility, I can easily remove the drivers and the sound works, but I don't know if that will be the case.

I have an ECS GeForce7050M-M motherboard. I can't really find specifics for chipsets, but the nVidia site detected a GeForce GTX 480 for video. If I recall correctly, my audio is some Realtek HD thing. I had this same problem when I tried 9.04, but I didn't narrow it down to the nVidia drivers at the time.

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?

What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.

I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.

Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.

But problem still occurs..

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot After NVidia Driver Update

Oct 14, 2010

I'm in the live CD right now trying to figure out what to do. When I first got into Ubuntu, it asked me to install nVidia drivers, so I did. Afterwards, it said I needed to restart my computer to finish installation, but when upon getting past the bootloader, my screen hangs on "Assuming drive cache: write through". I found this post: [URL] but the terminal commands didn't help and I can't find /etc/xorg.cfg even if I show hidden files. I've added a picture of the screen I get when I try to boot up, so maybe someone can tell me what to do to get back into Ubuntu. I would like to be able to get back without having to reinstall, if possible.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Nvidia Driver Install?

Mar 4, 2010

This is my first day with Umbuntu and my first post here at the forums. I bought a Dell Pentium 4 with a fresh install of Umbuntu 9.10 on it. Worked well until I decided to do something a newbie shouldn't do and install a graphics card and drivers. The graphics card worked just fine until the drivers were installed and I tried to reboot the system. Now it no longer boots. Some specifics for you.

Since my time with Ubuntu is limited to hours, the nomenclature will probably be wrong. But I will try to get the point across. The card is a EVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. On first start up with this card the computer functioned fine. I went to a place where you could change the screen options. There were three selections and I don't remember the names (idiot that I am). I selected the middle one. The OS stated that in order to utilize all the capabilities of nvidia graphics cards blah, blah, blah, a driver would need to be downloaded and activated. No name, just a driver. OK, do it (sounds kinda windows like). The download seemed to go OK, but now I needed to reboot to activate the driver.

Now: Ubuntu logo comes up. Screen goes to a text screen that says:

Ubuntu 9.10 dave-ubuntu tty1
dave-ubuntu login:

This screen flashes and does not take input from the keyboard or mouse. Next, I removed the graphics card and used the on-board graphics. Same result with faster flashing. What have I done? Apparently Ubuntu and Linux in general don't have a system recovery option? I read something about the GRUB menu, but the system flasher GRUB loading for half a second and then is on to locking up. I can't seem to get to a GRUB menu. What a way to finish the day.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Updated Kernel ?

Jul 8, 2010

I recently updated the kernel of lucid from 2.6.32-22 to the ""-23 release through update manager. Now whenever i try to boot the new kernel from GRUB the screen goes black and the computer stops responding with the caps lock and scroll lock lights flashing on the keyboard.

I can still boot into ""-22 fine and keep using ubuntu.

My first thought that the problem was the newer kernel itself so I tried to update to 2.6.33-5 from [url]but the same boot problem exists within this one also.

Because it goes straight into the black screen after GRUB I have no way of telling what has happened without error messages. Would this appear in any log files and if so which ones?
