General :: Make Ubuntu Latest Edition USB Boot Key?

rawest of recruits when I comes to Linux, so pardon me for asking a question that must come up constantly. I've done keyword searches and related questions pop up, but not the most fundamental of all, namely -- How do I create a USB boot drive that will pop me into the latest edition of Ubuntu?Please guide me to a VERY specific guide, because I have looked all over Robin Hood's barn and back, and have found all manner of questions from people who can't get a USB boot key to work -- but nowhere have I found a simple, step-by-step guide for creating one in the first place. If I'm at the wrong forum, please guide me the right one.
when i am booting my ubuntu 10.04 i boots into tty1. then i have to start gdm manually Sudo etc/init.d/gdm start. and then it works fine. how do i make my 64bit desktop edition boot into gdm automatically and permanently?
I'd like to install the latest opensuse server edition on my laptop. Is that for free? Also, I have a laptop with windows Vista, 3MB Ram and 80gb hardrive.
If I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.
can i install ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition in my laptop? Is there any drawback in installing in laptop? which one is better-netbook edition or desktop edition?
My config: PI945GZD motherboard 2 GB RAM Windows 7 UltimateMy processor supports 64 bit OS but I have not tried any. So should I download and use the 32 bit edition or the 64 bit edition.I have sound blaster 5.1(not sound blaster 5.1 live). Would it work in ubuntu?
I have been setting up a box now and have it configured with everything I need and is running great.I would like to test out the netbook remix edition is there a way to install the desktop environment along site with Gnome (like I use to do with KDE)Would be great so I wouldn't have to re-configure drivers and such.To be able to switch from Gnome environment to Netbook remix environment.I am running Ubuntu 10.04.
I have an Acer Aspire One D250 with Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition installed. The system hangs the majority of boots at the exact same place. Here is what I see when system hangs:

I'm running a clean install of the latest version of -current64.When I try to run a number of SlackBuilds from SBo, the scripts stop (no error) after the make install step.If I manually run all of the commands after make install, I get a fully functional package, and the program works with no problems.In looking as the logs, I don't see any errors during the configure, make, or make install steps.
I'm having problems with other scripts as well that are not XFCE related, but these are good examples. Another oddity is that the SlackBuild script for thunar-archive-plugin at slacky.eu works.I've never had any problems with these scripts before, and many other scripts still run just fine. I can't track down a common problem here.
I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu desktop edition and when I boot up I have the options to boot either Windows 7, or Ubuntu (so far so good), however, when I select Ubuntu I get a message saying that the following file is corrupt:
File: ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr
status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
Any thoughts on this? Would just re-installing it fix the problem?
I have a strange problem with my skype beta (latest) and Pidgin (gmail account) the problem is when i make voice call, it works fine for 1 or 2 mins then the voice drops and it connects after 20,30 secs.
I have a Windows XP/Windows 7 dual boot system. My problem: [URL]. I follow these instructions to the letter, the live "CD" works fine - using a USB stick, I do not have a DVD drive, in- or external -. When I try to install Ubuntu from the live system, it corrupts my master boot record, I get the Error: No Such Device #####################. After I fixed this I tried to install Ubuntu under windows, using the same usb's wubi installer. The install completes, I reboot, and after selecting Ubuntu in my boot menu, I get that likewise well known error with wubildr.mbr [URL]
Rebuilding the USB stick doesn't make any difference, it behaves the same way. The wubi installer has the very annoying habit of downloading the iso during the installation procedure every time, I don't know why I can't just select the iso downloaded in the first step of the above link. This way I cannot check any md5 because I have no idea where it downloads the iso. What should I do to get Ubuntu working? Reinstalling any of my Windows systems is not an option, it is every time like gambling, I am using the same installation files, but sometimes the result is just not the same.
I have a laptop with 2 x different versions of Ubuntu installed as follows:
Ubuntu 10.10 on a partition; and Ubuntu ultimate edition gamers (based on ubuntu 10.10 I believe).
I've only recently installed the gamers edition as a dual boot to see what it looks like. Now I've had a play around with it I've realised that I don;t really like it.What's the quickest/easiest way of reverting back to my original ubuntu 10.10 as a single boot? I don't want to re-install 10.10 - I was hoping I could delete the gamers edition to get back to my original single boot 10.10.
I have installed Linux on separate drive. And XP on another drive. By mistake I deleted the Linux Drive from Disk Management. Now the message is like this
Please Insert Bootable CD(some thing like this) Press any key to restart.
After I upgraded from 9.10, I restarted and waited. ubuntu boot screen froze after a little bit, and the my caplock and scrolllock started flashing (I believe this is the kernel panicking) Then I tried safe mode and it did the same thing when is was saying something about sensors. So I then went to grub and started it with an old kernel and it booted fine (without the splash screen though) what should I do?
EDIT: ok the kernel version it is not working with is version 2.6.32-21 and it does work in 2.6.31-21. Also, it now doesn't say anything about sensors. It panics after App-armor loads ans skips Firefox's profile (or something like that)
Now this no longer works with whatever grub 10.04 uses, I suspect it is grub2? How do I restore grub to the specific partition I need and NOT to MBR? I have a different boot loader and this boot loader is directed to Ubuntu's boot partition.... Since I cannot boot directly to Ubuntu's boot partition I am perhaps left with only LiveCD to do the recovery, right?
I have a dual-boot system (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04) both 64-bit running on an HP pavilion laptop. I installed this dual-boot system only a few months ago and have continually added some new packages and updates with very few problems. However, now something has happened that really baffles me --- An error in the bootup process that I have never seen before and one that I have been unable to solve.
The problem I had been doing some programming (in Python) and after having the laptop on for several hours, I did a graceful shut down. Then, the next morning I turned on my laptop and the following is what happened:

I have tried the recommendation in B. to use 'chkdsk /r' in Windows. This took about 3 hours and had no effect on the error message. I also had made backups using "Back in time" which I tried (at least some of the directories) but none of these recovered directories had any noticeable effect on the error. This seems to be some basic device mounting problem that for some reason occurs only with the latest release and was triggered by some unknown event
I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.
I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.
I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.
This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.
Where's the recovery console in 10.04? Apparently there's no Grub so holding escape to get to a boot menu to boot into a shell isn't an option for me it seems.
I just want a shell so I can remove lm-sensors or whatever package I installed that's made my system unboobatble.
I had Windows 7 installed on my system, then I installed Debian testing with grub2 as its boot manager.Initially I couldn't see windows entry in grub at all, so I ran:aptitude install os-prober kcpuload update-grub Now I can see the entry, but when I select it I get only Win7 system restore, instead of the the real thing. Any ides how to make it work?
EDIT: I tried the suggested approach to add a new file to /etc/grub.d, which generated an entry in grub.cfg, but it does not appear in the grub menu on boot :(

I have a Finnix live CD. I can customize it by remastering it. I'm trying to install MS Windows from my Linux box. Because I have no CD drives nor USB ports, I can't use any live media to boot the computer and install Windows from the installation disk. So I've created a FAT partition and copy DOS files on that, so that I can boot this partition and install Windows from there. But the problem is I still haven't able to get it to boot.

I created the partition by using cfdisk to format it as type 0B: WIN95 FAT32, and made dos filesystem on it using:
Code: mkfs.msdos /dev/hda1 But when I reboot and select the DOS entry in GRUB, it tells me that: "This is not a bootable disk. Please insert a bootable floppy and press any key to try again."
what I'm missing or doing wrong here? Do I need to change something on the MBR of hda1 etc...
