Ubuntu :: Lucid - Random System Lockups - How To Troubleshoot?

May 14, 2010

Since upgrading to lucid, I have been experiencing regular system lockups. About once a day, my X desktop will disappear and I'll see a TTY with a few old console messages and at that point everything is completely frozen and I must hard reboot.

I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?

Ubuntu :: Repeating - Random Total Freeze - New Install - Troubleshoot

Oct 17, 2009

Ubuntu 9.04, all updates
Latest firmware, etc
abit SG-95 motherboard
2 GB Ultra DDR2
Intel Celeron 360 cpu
PNY GeForce 9500 GT video

Started 2 weeks ago, random and total freeze of system (video, keyboard, mouse).

Nothing useful in th log, other than it occurs at the same time syslogd restart show up in the log.

I don't even know where to begin, or how to troubleshoot the issue if nothing shows up in the log... could use some help, please.

Problem occurs with or without the nvidia drivers installed. Ubuntu or windows, same thing..connected or not connected to the internet

I've ran every memory test I can find, with no issues reported. HD seems OK. No other symptom that I can find, other than it croaking, usually when I'm in the middle of a broadcast or recording.

Is the only machine I have for now, I need to figure out what's wrong and replace it as quickly as possible, so I can get back to work.

Ubuntu :: Lockups Whole System While Surfing Web?

Jan 5, 2011

I"m a newish Ubuntu user, but have been running some flavour or other for the last 5-6-7 years. Anyway, I just recently installed Maverick and have to say it's polished compared to the last version I tried ( maybe 6? ).

I am however having a frustrating issue while surfing the web. After a 2-3 minutes using firefox, 5-10 minutes using chromium - the whole system seems to lock up solid. The mouse/ keyboard no longer respond. I've read through a few log files and nothing seems to stand out, though I may be looking at the wrong place. I plan on running some system monitors, and top when I get home to see if they show me anything. Just thought I'd come here to ask for any other things to have a look at.

CentOS 5 :: System Lockups And Freezing?

Dec 20, 2010

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5 on small thin client system with a 80G HDDs, 1 GB ram [URL], I have run into an issue where the system just locks up and freezes and I can no longer access it, cant ping it, cant use webmin and cant view its web pages. The system seemed to be running fine unitl I left it to do some updates via webmin as it informed me there were 118 updates. I really only use the system as a LAN captive network server, and it is currently in the testing phase for this setup. The install went on with no issues and it ran fine, but now every so often within 12 hours it just locks up and I have to reboot. kdump shows no logs so I am finding hard to work out what is going on. but have installed it on 5 of my servers 4x ibm x335 and this . I intend to use the mini server for a captive portal system displaying advertising and promotions to wireless clients.

Ubuntu :: Complete System Lockups Happening Randomly In Karmic?

Mar 8, 2010

My Ubuntu Karmic running system experiences random lockups. There is no pattern in when it will happen, it can go for days without one, or happen every couple hours. Only thing I can notice is that it happens most often when I run Firefox, but when it happens, it happens regardless of me having Firefox open on a website with lots of Flash content or not. When the lockup happens, I cannot move the mouse - the led light on my mouse shuts off, I can't move the cursor, the whole UI becomes unrensponsive, there is no blinking lights on the keyboard, REISUB does not work, only hitting the reset button on my case helps. After reboot, there are no indications of errors in any of the logs that I can see.I have ran memtest for 24 hours, and it completed without errors.

Additional information:

1. LSPCI output:

Code:

00:00.0 Host bridge: ALi Corporation M1697 HTT Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ALi Corporation PCI Express Root Port
00:02.0 PCI bridge: ALi Corporation PCI Express Root Port

Fedora :: System Freezes Randomly - How To Troubleshoot

Mar 26, 2010

I am running the Nvidia driver. My system freezes randomly. I've had to reboot my system over 5 times today alone. When it freezes, everything is frozen, even the second hand on the analogue clock. One more issue, and I'm not sure if it's related, my stupid screen goes black after 5 minutes of no typing or mouse movement. This never happended when I first installed it. The issue just started within the last 3 weeks. Kpackage Kit is hidden. I was using it to do my automatic updates. Now I just use yum. between the time I first installed Fedora 12 and now, something has happened to my build to cause these issues.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Lucid Lynx - Random Freeze - Hang-up

May 10, 2010

It seems that my Ubuntu 10.04 (clean install) to randomly freeze / hang (mouse/keyboard unresponsive, only a hard reboot is available as option) but with no garbled screens/windows/etc. There's no pattern why or any application that could be responsible. It could happen ten minutes after it is started or after 2 days but at some point and suddenly the system will become totally unresponsive, freeze and hang up. I used the same PC with Karmic Koala and releases before that (sometimes on for days) with no such problem so it shouldn't be a hardware problem.

I thoroughly check system logs after the hard reboot (System > Administation > Log File Viewer) and there's no entry around the time of each freeze / hang to pinpoint me to something.

The only thing that is certain is that the following errors / warnings always appear in .xsession-errors file:

Here is also some info about my system:
M/B: ASUS P4R800-V DELUXE
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
RAM: 1GB

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Logging Off Since Lucid Upgrade

May 18, 2010

Just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid using auto upgrade on Thinkpad T42. Since doing this, I am experiencing random logging off. Suddenly, I get dumped to the log in screen and need to log back in. A search in the forum suggests this was a problem that some people had with Karmic, but is now fixed (I never experienced it with Karmic)

It seems to be associated with Firefox, with it not happened since switching to Chrome, but switching back to Firefox has just resulted in me being logged off. This could be a coincidence of course. This is rather serious problem as I use the Thinkpad to give presentations

Ubuntu :: Ubu Karmic 2 Lucid Upgrade Now Random Freezes / Fix It?

Apr 26, 2011

1st post @ LQ. Ubuntu user since 2007ish. Lots of PC experience... now vexed by upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04LTS Lucid.

The problem: random freezes whenever I boot into Lucid as user through usual Grub menu. The freeze sequence is: 1- screen stops, 2- mouse pointer freeze w/ no effect on click but moves freely and keyboard is useless, 3- screen blacks out for about 30 seconds and then returns but is unusable and 4- constant HDD activity for about 5-10 seconds. I have waited several minutes for a recovery of some sort but no dice. I reboot via on/off or reset button. Ubu deletes 2 inodes and then I'm off and running again.

If I boot through the recovery console there are no problems at all. The recovery console sequence: 1- select recovery from Grub menu, 2- at recovery menu select drop to root command prompt, 3- give root password, 4- enter 'gdm' at console prompt, finish boot up in my only user desktop (not root.)

I have not been able to find any log files that show an error message, but I'm not so tech oriented that I would necessarily know one if I saw one. Through many hours of browsing posts describing Lucid problems @ UbuntuForums (one of which has over 1,000 responses) I have found my '.xsession-errors' file (attached) is full of data.code...

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid & 2.6.36-1 Kernel: Random Freeze After Boot

Oct 26, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).

I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).

Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?

Ubuntu :: 2.6.35-23 Random System Freeze / Crash - Fix It?

Nov 29, 2010

I seem to be having a problem on the new Kernel (2.6.35-23) with the system randomly freezing.

I have installed a number of things in recent days leading up to this problem, but when i boot with the old kernel i don't seem to have any issues. From this i am guessing its the new kernel.

The freezing seems (although i am not sure) to be worse when Rhythmbox is running. When it happens everything freezes, the playing song skips, replaying the same one second of music over and over. All the hotkeys stop and the mouse cursor stops responding.

I have seen people talking about system logs to look at system crashes but i don't know how to show those. I also doubt my ability to interpret them.

Ubuntu :: Random System Freeze / Lockup - Nothing In Logs

Jun 3, 2011

Running updated 11.04 on a older Dell Precision 360n. Been having random system freezes for the past month that requires a hard restart (REISUB doesn't work) each time. Sometimes the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs blink, other times not. sometimes it happens during boot, other times during normal usage. There hasn't been anything in any of the logs (except once, which I'll post below). This happened running 10.04 and 10.10 as well. I've run PC-check a few times and all hardware diagnostics have passed. Until today, i've been able to boot and run Trinity Rescue Kit 3.4 to mount the disk and examine the logs (and do backups), but now TRK won't boot and spews kernel panics when loading.

General :: Random System Freeze ?

Mar 2, 2010

I'm running Fedora 12 with GNOME on an old Toshiba Satellite A15. From time to time I get a system freeze, where everything stops working besides the touch pad (I can move the cursor, just can't click on anything). When I boot up, I see an error message that it skips past before I can read anything, although I have spotted the snippets 'pci' 'error' and what appears to be the 0x at the start of a memory address. When I try and shut down the system (going either by command line or the System->Shut Down part), I get to the part where it says "Unmounting filesystems..." and then it stops right there. When I boot it back up, I get an error that says "A crash in package kernel has been detected."

The same happens when I boot up after the hard freeze. It seems more frequent when I have a heavy load on system memory, but for the most part it seems random. I've seen it crash after 5 minutes with only Pidgin or gedit open, I've seen it run for weeks with over 100 Firefox tabs, Pidgin, 3 documents, and GIMP running, but it seems more likely in the second scenario. It also seems to have a chance of freezing again within 5 minutes of rebooting (even if I don't touch anything after login). I ran Fedora 8 and Fedora 10 on this computer just fine, with most of the same system settings (copied my /home folder for each upgrade). I have a dual-boot system (XP/Fedora), with a third partition for data and a 200MB partition for the boot loader. The partition with Fedora is encrypted, and the crashing while trying to unmount the filesystem implies to me that might be the problem, but whatever it is, it wasn't in Fedora 8 or 10 (at least as far as I could tell).

Fedora :: Random And Annoying System Freezes In F13

Aug 7, 2010

I'm getting very random full system freezes with F13. The keyboard stops responding completely. Sometimes the mouse (and the mouse only) still works. I those cases, I can log in via ssh, kill kdm, and everything goes back to normal until the next freeze. However, in most cases, I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes the system goes on for days without a problem, and sometimes it freezes 10 times in a day (It's in one of those days that the bug-screen saved me from flying out the window). I also had this problem on F12. I'm not sure if its video-driver related as both nvidia and nouveau experience this behaviour. In fact, I'm not at all sure what the cause may be.

Ubuntu :: Intermittent Lockups Since Upgrading To 9.10

Jan 4, 2010

I have Ubuntu running on a Compaq desktop. Version 9.04 ran great but since upgrading to 9.10 it intermittently locks up. There is no rhyme or reason to the timing. Sometimes it is immediately after logging in but usually it is after the system has been running awhile. Sometimes it happens when I'm actively using it and sometimes when it is idle. It has never happened at the login screen, no matter how long I leave it.

Note that it is not a complete lockup. The mouse cursor moves, but no longer functions (i.e. you can't click anything). The keyboard does not work at all. For example Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and Ctrl-Alt-F5 do nothing. Disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse and keyboard does not help. Also, I can still access the system over the network using SMB and SSH, which leads me to believe that X or Gnome is where the problem lies.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have done so far. As I said I can access the system using SSH, so I logged in and ran "top" to view CPU utilization. I found no process using more than 1% of the CPU. Also I examined the messages log and found "segfault" errors related to libc (?), USB and my keyboard, so as a test I traded my fancy wireless keyboard for a generic one. That has not helped. I'm not sure where to go from here. I've examined other logs but it is all Greek to me. There are entries that sound as if they could be errors but I'm not sure and the times of the errors don't match the times of the lockups anyway.

Ubuntu Networking :: BCM4321 And Wl Driver Causes Lockups?

Sep 1, 2011

I've tried searching all over the place, and I'm drowning in outdated and contradictory information. I have a brand new Netgear WiFi PCI adapter. The exact model is "WN311B-100NAS N300" The related output of lspci is

Code:

03:06.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4321 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)
lsmod returns:

Code:

Module Size Used by
lib80211_crypt_tkip 17387 0
wl 2568244 0
lib80211 14991 2 lib80211_crypt_tkip,wl

[code]....

So, I know it's using the BCM4321 chipset and wl driver. Ubuntu detected this card without any trouble, and I was able to use the "Additional Drivers" application to get it running before disconnecting my ethernet.

The card works well, and is very stable until I try to download a file larger than a few MB, or try to play a video stored on my home network. As soon as I try either of those, my computer locks up hard. No error messages. Just a hard lockup that I can't get out of with anything short of holding down the power button on my case until it cuts the power supply.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Fglrx, ATI Mobility 4200 - Lockups Gnome - 3 -shell

Oct 17, 2010

I have installed the fglrx driver from "Hardware Drivers" and it runs fine, until I launch gnome3 or gnome-shell, it then just locks X (its not hard locked, I can CTRL + ALT + 2/3 etc out) but I cant do anything else.

If I use the mesa / xorg driver its fine.

The trouble is I play one game, and I need the fglrx driver for that game, the mesa one corrupts the 3d engine

It wouldnt be a pain, but i am one of the few who seems to find gnome-shell an improvement, and I get really frustrated when it wont work.

Any idea's on what I can try, other than hopfully having a working system when ATI launches the 10.10 driver on its website (although the leaked rc had the same issue) I only recently got a ATI card so I am pretty new when dealing with the ATI cat's.
