Ubuntu :: Natty Lockups - Recorded In A Log File?

Jun 2, 2011

I am on 64-bit Natty and for the first time since my install a month ago, I have had a system hang requiring a power-off restart. It happened yesterday and a few moments ago.My question is that I want to troubleshoot this myself and wonder if the activities that my system were running just prior to crashing are recorded in a log file somewhere.I used to look int /var/log.messages or /var/log/boot, but this was in the Maverick days.

Ubuntu :: Lockups Whole System While Surfing Web?

Jan 5, 2011

I"m a newish Ubuntu user, but have been running some flavour or other for the last 5-6-7 years. Anyway, I just recently installed Maverick and have to say it's polished compared to the last version I tried ( maybe 6? ).

I am however having a frustrating issue while surfing the web. After a 2-3 minutes using firefox, 5-10 minutes using chromium - the whole system seems to lock up solid. The mouse/ keyboard no longer respond. I've read through a few log files and nothing seems to stand out, though I may be looking at the wrong place. I plan on running some system monitors, and top when I get home to see if they show me anything. Just thought I'd come here to ask for any other things to have a look at.

Ubuntu :: Intermittent Lockups Since Upgrading To 9.10

Jan 4, 2010

I have Ubuntu running on a Compaq desktop. Version 9.04 ran great but since upgrading to 9.10 it intermittently locks up. There is no rhyme or reason to the timing. Sometimes it is immediately after logging in but usually it is after the system has been running awhile. Sometimes it happens when I'm actively using it and sometimes when it is idle. It has never happened at the login screen, no matter how long I leave it.

Note that it is not a complete lockup. The mouse cursor moves, but no longer functions (i.e. you can't click anything). The keyboard does not work at all. For example Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and Ctrl-Alt-F5 do nothing. Disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse and keyboard does not help. Also, I can still access the system over the network using SMB and SSH, which leads me to believe that X or Gnome is where the problem lies.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have done so far. As I said I can access the system using SSH, so I logged in and ran "top" to view CPU utilization. I found no process using more than 1% of the CPU. Also I examined the messages log and found "segfault" errors related to libc (?), USB and my keyboard, so as a test I traded my fancy wireless keyboard for a generic one. That has not helped. I'm not sure where to go from here. I've examined other logs but it is all Greek to me. There are entries that sound as if they could be errors but I'm not sure and the times of the errors don't match the times of the lockups anyway.

Ubuntu Networking :: BCM4321 And Wl Driver Causes Lockups?

Sep 1, 2011

I've tried searching all over the place, and I'm drowning in outdated and contradictory information. I have a brand new Netgear WiFi PCI adapter. The exact model is "WN311B-100NAS N300" The related output of lspci is

Code:

03:06.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4321 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)
lsmod returns:

Code:

Module Size Used by
lib80211_crypt_tkip 17387 0
wl 2568244 0
lib80211 14991 2 lib80211_crypt_tkip,wl

[code]....

So, I know it's using the BCM4321 chipset and wl driver. Ubuntu detected this card without any trouble, and I was able to use the "Additional Drivers" application to get it running before disconnecting my ethernet.

The card works well, and is very stable until I try to download a file larger than a few MB, or try to play a video stored on my home network. As soon as I try either of those, my computer locks up hard. No error messages. Just a hard lockup that I can't get out of with anything short of holding down the power button on my case until it cuts the power supply.

Since upgrading to lucid, I have been experiencing regular system lockups. About once a day, my X desktop will disappear and I'll see a TTY with a few old console messages and at that point everything is completely frozen and I must hard reboot.

I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?

The system seemed to be running fine unitl I left it to do some updates via webmin as it informed me there were 118 updates. I really only use the system as a LAN captive network server, and it is currently in the testing phase for this setup. The install went on with no issues and it ran fine, but now every so often within 12 hours it just locks up and I have to reboot. kdump shows no logs so I am finding hard to work out what is going on. but have installed it on 5 of my servers 4x ibm x335 and this . I intend to use the mini server for a captive portal system displaying advertising and promotions to wireless clients.

Ubuntu :: Complete System Lockups Happening Randomly In Karmic?

Mar 8, 2010

My Ubuntu Karmic running system experiences random lockups. There is no pattern in when it will happen, it can go for days without one, or happen every couple hours. Only thing I can notice is that it happens most often when I run Firefox, but when it happens, it happens regardless of me having Firefox open on a website with lots of Flash content or not. When the lockup happens, I cannot move the mouse - the led light on my mouse shuts off, I can't move the cursor, the whole UI becomes unrensponsive, there is no blinking lights on the keyboard, REISUB does not work, only hitting the reset button on my case helps. After reboot, there are no indications of errors in any of the logs that I can see.I have ran memtest for 24 hours, and it completed without errors.

Additional information:

1. LSPCI output:

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Too Much Traffic Recorded On /var/log/messages?

Apr 19, 2011

For about 3-4 weeks, my file system used space was growing and growing. After some days, I decided to analyze the file system in order to understand what is going on. Well, the results returned that the log files at /var/log ( especially kern.log, syslog and messages ) were the log files that were sucking the free space. I searched if this was some kind of bug but it turned out that if these files are growing, the problem is in the records.

So I picked from the tail of the messages log the last 50 lines and I saw this:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Fglrx, ATI Mobility 4200 - Lockups Gnome - 3 -shell

I have installed the fglrx driver from "Hardware Drivers" and it runs fine, until I launch gnome3 or gnome-shell, it then just locks X (its not hard locked, I can CTRL + ALT + 2/3 etc out) but I cant do anything else.

If I use the mesa / xorg driver its fine.

The trouble is I play one game, and I need the fglrx driver for that game, the mesa one corrupts the 3d engine

It wouldnt be a pain, but i am one of the few who seems to find gnome-shell an improvement, and I get really frustrated when it wont work.

Any idea's on what I can try, other than hopfully having a working system when ATI launches the 10.10 driver on its website (although the leaked rc had the same issue) I only recently got a ATI card so I am pretty new when dealing with the ATI cat's.

Programming :: Difference In Time Recorded By Clock_gettime() And TSC?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to measure the time it takes to execute a C function. The question is which is the best method to record time. After a lot of searching online, I found two ways [URL]:

a. using clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &t)
b. using TSC

I call the C function 50 times (recording the time it takes for each call). The average is found only for the last 35 calls.

Using (a), I get:

48345 us
28350 us
28379 us
27716 us

[code]....

Average time for the last 35 loops: 121450.47 microseconds

Using (b), I get:

48130 cycles
28726 cycles
28820 cycles
27421 cycles

[code]....

Average for the last 35 loops: 27236.66 cycles What could be causing the strange value of 3322259 us in method (a)? I could just use method (b) but I would like to know what is going on here... Btw, I am using a desktop - with Linux debian 2.6.26 #1 SMP.

I honestly didn't have much luck with cheese - it seemed to work fine, but when it came time to record video, the frame rate dropped to a ridiculous level, making the video completely unusable. I could wave my arm in front of the camera, and it might pick up one frame of that.

Moving on, I tried wxcam, which I like a lot.. however, when I record video with the xvid compression, they play back considerably faster than they were recorded.

This was tried 3 ways: in Audacity, in Skype (making a test call), and using the arecord command in a console, as root. To make the playback sound normal, I tried taking the already-recorded file and speeding it up in Audacity. It was necessary to speed up the recording by 50%. I've tried updating alsa and other suggestions which I could figure out, and run the scripts for diagnostic information. BTW, I'm using a headset plugged in to standard 1/8 inch mic and speaker jacks, not a USB headset.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Microphone Recorded Sound Barely Audible

Feb 9, 2011

I am trying to record using a microphone on a machine running Fedora 14. The microphone itself seems to work fine when plugged into a Windows laptop, and the Linux machine is able to play sound just fine. However, although I can record using the microphone (using arecord or audacity, for example), the recorded audio is super, super quiet. I have run alsamixer, and experimented with every capture source. Anything which had any effect (using arecord -vv to see the dynamic sound level) has been turned up to 100%. Still, recorded audio is barely audible.

I have run:
yum reinstall alsa-utils alsa-plugins-pulseaudio alsa-tools-firmware alsa-firmware alsa-lib
But that made no difference. I ran alsa-info, and the output is here: [URL]. Why my recorded sound is barely audible? My next step is probably going to be to boot to Ubuntu, just to see if it has the same problem.

Ubuntu :: Natty Large File Copies Cause Dramatic Slowdown?

Jul 30, 2011

If I initiate a file copy of more than a couple of GiB, the PC goes into a dramatic slowdown. Even selecting a different subdirectory through Nautilus can take 30+ seconds. Now, whilst I appreciate that file copying puts a load on the bus, DMA and, to a certain extent, the CPU, it seems unconscionable that it makes the PC effectively unusable until the copy has completed. Is there any way to (practically) lower the priority, or similar, of the copy process so that one can continue to use the platform during large file copies? Right now, I end up using a laptop adjacent to the PC whenever I have to copy a large file. This, for a mainstream operating system is, frankly, ludicrous.I'm aware that I could run Nautilus 'nicely' but I don't want to make changes which would compromise other aspects of the system. It would also be pleasant, for a change, not to have to read a couple of telephone directories of technical documentation in order to resolve the problem myself. This must be a general problem and, in my view, something which seriously compromises the usefulness of Ubuntu given the sizes of contemporary drives and files.

The i7 I'm using at the moment has 8 cores non of which go over 15% usage while the copy is progressing despite the OS being effectively frozen for long periods.Environment:Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.40GHz; 16GB RAM; Natty (11.04) fully updated as at 29th July 2011; Kernel 2.6.38-10-generic, GNOME 2.32.1.; Primary drive has 563.9GiB free space, Running in Ubuntu 'Classic' (no effects) mode

Debian Multimedia :: Headphones - No Sound Is Recorded By The Speech Recognition Utility

Mar 4, 2011

My wife is taking an online language course that requires Windows in order to record and playback speech (for pronunciation training). I decided the easiest thing to do would be to clone a VM I use on my machine for tasks that can only be accomplished in a Windows environment. I did so, and successfully installed the speech recognition utility on the Windows guest VM. Unfortunately, although the microphone works just fine--I can hear my voice in the headphones--no sound is recorded by the speech recognition utility. Just to be clear, the microphone is fully functional under GNU/Linux. My wife has been using Skype without any issues at all. That is, Skype used to work. Somewhere during the course of trying to resolve the voice recording problem I managed to break Skype. I have no idea how.

It's a long story, but I'll try to be as brief as possible. When I could not get the VM solution to work properly, I thought maybe the problem was with the VM, so I checked the original copy on my own machine. No problem there. Windows sees and hears the microphone just fine (using the testing utility under sound configuration). So how is it possible that the microphone doesn't work in the cloned VM image? Before you stop me, allow me to note that both machines have identical motherboards, and both are configured to use the onboard sound. Sound works on the Linux host and the Windows guest VM. Both sound and microphone work in the original VM image on my machine, but only sound works in the cloned VM on my wife's machine.

If you've followed me down the rabbit hole this far, please continue with me a bit further as things get stranger and stranger. After triple checking all the setting in KMix (I'm running Squeeze/KDE on both machines) to be sure they were identical, I noted that I was unable to view/add/enable the "channel" option on my wife's machine. Why, I have no idea. As I said, the machines are identical as can be both regarding hardware and software. Out of desperation, I decided to set up an account for my wife on my machine. I created her account, made sure she had the necessary audio permissions, then cloned my VM to her account. Same problem.

I would love for someone to point out what I'm missing here. Same hardware, identical VM (clone), same permissions, same sound configurations in KMix and under the Windows guest VM. How is it possible for the microphone to work for me, but not for my wife? Is there some mystery configuration file somewhere that has magically been altered for her account alone? The worst part about this entire process is that I've broken my wife's Skype, which is a big deal seeing as we live in a tiny country in the heart of Africa and cell phone communications are very expensive.
