Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Fails To Boot On Rare/random Occasions?

Feb 23, 2011

Why is it that about 98 to 99% of the time my computer will boot to Ubuntu/Lucid just fine but on rare / random occasions after seeing the initial BIOS boot screen and initial cursor just after initial BIOS boot screens, the video will just go BLANK, i.e. does not boot to Ubuntu desktop ?

If I then do ALT,CRL,DEL sequence the SPLASH screen is displayed on the monitor and the system then reboots and then goes thru the complete boot process all the way to the desktop just fine. Why this occasional failure to boot completely to the desktop ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid & 2.6.36-1 Kernel: Random Freeze After Boot

Oct 26, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).

I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).

Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Fails To Boot After Aptitude Full-upgrade

May 12, 2010

I run "aptitude update;aptitude full-upgrade" today, then I updated /etc/default/grub changing only the default boot line number, and I dully run update-grub, with no error messages. Now Kubuntu will not boot. The new kernel 2.6.32-22 is in the boot menu. When I turn the computer on, a blinking cursor appears on top line, column 8, and after a few seconds this cursor disappears and the screen is blank - my monitor indicates no video signal.

The failsafe 2.6.32-22 grub line does not boot either. I tried pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc. up to Ctrl-Alt-F10 to get to a text mode login prompt, but the screen remains blank and my monitor indicates no video signal. The workaround is to boot to kernel 2.6.32-21. The machine is Athlon XP, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Logging Off Since Lucid Upgrade

May 18, 2010

Just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid using auto upgrade on Thinkpad T42. Since doing this, I am experiencing random logging off. Suddenly, I get dumped to the log in screen and need to log back in. A search in the forum suggests this was a problem that some people had with Karmic, but is now fixed (I never experienced it with Karmic)

It seems to be associated with Firefox, with it not happened since switching to Chrome, but switching back to Firefox has just resulted in me being logged off. This could be a coincidence of course. This is rather serious problem as I use the Thinkpad to give presentations

Ubuntu Installation :: Mountall Fails With Kernel 2.6.32-22 At Lucid

Jun 5, 2010

I have upgraded at lucid from karmic.I have a little peculiar setup. My root partition is on sda3 and I mount the following:/usr -> /dev/sdb1/var ->/dev/sdb2/home -> /dev/sdb3(sdb isn't really a SATA disk but a PATA).When I boot with the new kernel 2.6.32-22 mountall stops with error messages that /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb1 are not ext2 file systems(this message comes from fsck.ext4??-It's using a ext4 program to check for ext2??)and cannot be mounted.Of cource those are normal ext4 filesystems which are being mounted without any problems with the last karmic kernel 2.6.31-21 which is what I am using)

Ubuntu Installation :: Brother Printer Fails After Lucid Re-install

Aug 7, 2010

I recently re-installed lucid on a computer which had a working ethernet printer queue, to a Brother MFC-5490cn. I installed the drivers from the ubuntu package archive and set up two printer queues, one for "dnssd://<ip-address>" and the other "lpd://<ip-address>/BINARY_P1". The first appears to recognize that the printer color ink is low, so perhaps there is some communication, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. The second queue appears to fail completely.

I vaguely recall that for my previous installation I used the package supplied by Brother, but that it was very difficult, since the package no longer matched the Ubuntu file layout and locations.

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Naming Of Disks At Each Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Fix It?

May 4, 2010

After upgrade to 10.04, my disks are randomly named (sda, sdb, sdc) at each boot. My drive labeled "XP" is sometimes named "sdb" and sometimes "sdc", while my other drive "DATA" is respectively "sdc" or "sdb". This wasn't the case before upgrade with KUbuntu 9.10.

Due to this random naming, my auto-mount in fstab often fail at boot time !

Any solution for this (not found here by myself) ?

Is this linked to Grub troubles reported many times here ?

Fedora Installation :: Triple Boot Pc - Random Lock Ups In FC 10

Feb 1, 2009

I have triple boot pc (xp, ubuntu, and fedora), installed in that order. xp and ubuntu seem to be stable. i have had to pull the power cord 3 or 4 times while booted in fedora. i noticed the last 2 times i can still move the mouse around, but can't get it to open anything. the keyboard is locked up, can't alt-f1 or f2 or anything to get console. can't get it to do anything, other than watch the mouse tail move around (weird).

i installed a new power supply (and at least i now have a power switch - the old one never had one), but that didn't fix the lock up problem. i haven't ran yum update since the fc10 live cd gnome install. was planning on doing that later.. not sure how long it will stay up to download all the 300 or so updates. right now the only thing open is a terminal (can't type in it).. what should i look at to fix this lock up problem?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Lucid Lynx - Random Freeze - Hang-up

May 10, 2010

It seems that my Ubuntu 10.04 (clean install) to randomly freeze / hang (mouse/keyboard unresponsive, only a hard reboot is available as option) but with no garbled screens/windows/etc. There's no pattern why or any application that could be responsible. It could happen ten minutes after it is started or after 2 days but at some point and suddenly the system will become totally unresponsive, freeze and hang up. I used the same PC with Karmic Koala and releases before that (sometimes on for days) with no such problem so it shouldn't be a hardware problem.

I thoroughly check system logs after the hard reboot (System > Administation > Log File Viewer) and there's no entry around the time of each freeze / hang to pinpoint me to something.

The only thing that is certain is that the following errors / warnings always appear in .xsession-errors file:

Here is also some info about my system:
M/B: ASUS P4R800-V DELUXE
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
RAM: 1GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9100 IGP

Ubuntu :: Lucid - Random System Lockups - How To Troubleshoot?

May 14, 2010

Since upgrading to lucid, I have been experiencing regular system lockups. About once a day, my X desktop will disappear and I'll see a TTY with a few old console messages and at that point everything is completely frozen and I must hard reboot.

I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?

Ubuntu :: Ubu Karmic 2 Lucid Upgrade Now Random Freezes / Fix It?

Apr 26, 2011

1st post @ LQ. Ubuntu user since 2007ish. Lots of PC experience... now vexed by upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04LTS Lucid.

The problem: random freezes whenever I boot into Lucid as user through usual Grub menu. The freeze sequence is: 1- screen stops, 2- mouse pointer freeze w/ no effect on click but moves freely and keyboard is useless, 3- screen blacks out for about 30 seconds and then returns but is unusable and 4- constant HDD activity for about 5-10 seconds. I have waited several minutes for a recovery of some sort but no dice. I reboot via on/off or reset button. Ubu deletes 2 inodes and then I'm off and running again.

If I boot through the recovery console there are no problems at all. The recovery console sequence: 1- select recovery from Grub menu, 2- at recovery menu select drop to root command prompt, 3- give root password, 4- enter 'gdm' at console prompt, finish boot up in my only user desktop (not root.)

I have not been able to find any log files that show an error message, but I'm not so tech oriented that I would necessarily know one if I saw one. Through many hours of browsing posts describing Lucid problems @ UbuntuForums (one of which has over 1,000 responses) I have found my '.xsession-errors' file (attached) is full of data.code...

Ubuntu :: 9.10 With 2.6.32 Kernel / Cannot Type In Occasions?

Jan 22, 2010

I am using eclipse, and whenever a pop-up appears (like auto complete, error detail, suggested fix - usually triggered by mouse-over) over the text field, the caret no longer types. I imagine the text field lost focus when the pop up appears but never got it back.

I can re-enable typing by either alt-tab, or switch workspace then back. But it is REALLY annoying since I need to do this every 30 seconds. The same problem happens to terminal, tex editor, and many other text fields.

I am using an ACER Aspire ONE (N270 atom, 2GB, Intel GMA945). I noticed after upgrading to 2.6.32 kernel but now I have checked with older kernels, they all have the same problem.

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot

May 27, 2011

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.

Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init!
Call trace:
get_empty_filp
panic

[code].....

Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):

G41M-S3
Intel G41 + ICH7 chipsets
CPU: LGA 775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme

[code]......

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Upgrade To Lucid

May 13, 2010

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 10.04 (Lucid) and now I cannot boot into Ubuntu - I just get a desktop with no icons or disk activity. I think this may have something to do with the fact that I answered 'no' when asked whether to replace my menu.1st file, and possibly some others. So my boot menu still refers to 9.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid 10.04 Won't Even Boot To Live CD

May 17, 2010

I have 2 laptops a Dell & a Toshiba. Both have NVidia GeForce FX Go 5200 cards. I first did an upgrade on the Dell and that ended in a BSOD. I used the Alt CD for that. I just received the Live CD in the mail. I put it in the Dell and ended with a BSOD. I figured as much. What got me is that I couldn't get 9.1 to boot after that. It kept trying and would shut done. After the 4th time it booted. I hope it continues.

I thought I'd try it in the Toshiba and it went fine LIVE. I can't install it on that machine as it's my recording only lappy. 10.04 is pretty but can't tell much else.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Won't Boot From HDD Without Live CD?

Sep 19, 2010

I have managed to install Ubuntu 10.40 LTS over the weekend and I have got it working... sort of.

My only remaining issue is that I am unable to boot into the Hard Drive where Ubuntu is installed unless I boot from the Live CD and select 'Boot from first hard disk'.

I have checked to make sure my boot priority sequence is correct, and it is, but without the Live CD, if I try to boot I get to the 'load operating system' screen and nothing would happen from there, just a blinking cursor.

I am not dual booting, but I do have 3 internal drives. I have made sure that the drive I am trying to boot to is in fact the drive that Ubuntu has been installed on. I also checked to see if Grub was installed which it didn't appear to be, but has since been installed.

My basic cpecs are:
Processor: AMD Phenom II 550 DualCore 3
Video Card: Gigabyte ATI HD5450 512MB
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-770T-USB3

Ubuntu Installation :: After 10.04 Upgrade XP Fails To Boot?

Anyway, i've upgraded to 10.04 - and already loving it. However... my XP o/s no longer boots. It use to prior to the upgrade. Now, when the XP o/s is selected from GRUB2, I just get a series of bleeps and a flashing _.

Now, I am a complete novice. I actually have no idea where to even begin trouble shooting GRUB2 (and i'm assuming its a problem with GRUB).

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10->10.04 Fails To Boot

Jun 10, 2010

Dual boot Windows XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10 on a single hdd, w/2 partitions. Booted to Ubuntu and upgraded online. XP boots fine, but Ubuntu, not so much; a msg about /dev not found, followed by a shell login prompt. I suspect a grub problem, but haven't been able to find a definitive answer. Since I can at least boot XP, I do not want to do anything that would screw that up and leave me with no bootable OS. I did the "upgrade" shortly after 10.04 was released. Is there a way to reliably fix this w/o possibly screwing up my ability to boot XP, the only OS I can boot? I have no Ubuntu 10.04 disk, as I used their upgrade online option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot From Usb - Led Flickers Then Fails

Mar 31, 2011

I am trying to get Ubuntu to boot from a usb, and failing.

I have a two year old Acaer Aspire 5735Z with Windows Vista as the OS. This has USB as a possible boot source, now of course at the top of the list.

I downloaded 10.10 and installed on an empty 8 GB Kingston drive as guided. There is just under 4 GB on the drive. The drive had been used before and all deleted.

So at start up the first thing that happens is the led on the USB drive flickers for less than one second, and then the Windows boots.

How can I know that a boot sector is installed ?
