I had this problem at times with 11.2 as well; I use GNOME. I have intermittent lockups when invoking the screen saver either while idle or soon afterward while using Firefox; problem seems to not show up if I do not use a screen saver when idle.
View 3 RepliesThere's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
Few weeks ago after updating vlc player from 1.0.5 to 1.1.4 (now) it stopped disabling screen saver and while watching movies (DVD or file) I have to hit a key or mouse every few minutes because the screen saver goes on.I had no such problem before. View 5 Replies View RelatedI"m a newish Ubuntu user, but have been running some flavour or other for the last 5-6-7 years. Anyway, I just recently installed Maverick and have to say it's polished compared to the last version I tried ( maybe 6? ).
I am however having a frustrating issue while surfing the web. After a 2-3 minutes using firefox, 5-10 minutes using chromium - the whole system seems to lock up solid. The mouse/ keyboard no longer respond. I've read through a few log files and nothing seems to stand out, though I may be looking at the wrong place. I plan on running some system monitors, and top when I get home to see if they show me anything. Just thought I'd come here to ask for any other things to have a look at.
I have Ubuntu running on a Compaq desktop. Version 9.04 ran great but since upgrading to 9.10 it intermittently locks up. There is no rhyme or reason to the timing. Sometimes it is immediately after logging in but usually it is after the system has been running awhile. Sometimes it happens when I'm actively using it and sometimes when it is idle. It has never happened at the login screen, no matter how long I leave it.
Note that it is not a complete lockup. The mouse cursor moves, but no longer functions (i.e. you can't click anything). The keyboard does not work at all. For example Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and Ctrl-Alt-F5 do nothing. Disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse and keyboard does not help. Also, I can still access the system over the network using SMB and SSH, which leads me to believe that X or Gnome is where the problem lies.
Here are the troubleshooting steps I have done so far. As I said I can access the system using SSH, so I logged in and ran "top" to view CPU utilization. I found no process using more than 1% of the CPU. Also I examined the messages log and found "segfault" errors related to libc (?), USB and my keyboard, so as a test I traded my fancy wireless keyboard for a generic one. That has not helped. I'm not sure where to go from here. I've examined other logs but it is all Greek to me. There are entries that sound as if they could be errors but I'm not sure and the times of the errors don't match the times of the lockups anyway.
it only seems to happen when im using wicd to change wireless access points several times in a short time span. i havent done anything out of the ordinary, installed packages off of sbopkg, and built my own kernel, but this happens in the stock kernel toothe following is what appears in syslog each time it happens

I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5 on small thin client system with a 80G HDDs, 1 GB ram [URL], I have run into an issue where the system just locks up and freezes and I can no longer access it, cant ping it, cant use webmin and cant view its web pages. The system seemed to be running fine unitl I left it to do some updates via webmin as it informed me there were 118 updates. I really only use the system as a LAN captive network server, and it is currently in the testing phase for this setup. The install went on with no issues and it ran fine, but now every so often within 12 hours it just locks up and I have to reboot. kdump shows no logs so I am finding hard to work out what is going on. but have installed it on 5 of my servers 4x ibm x335 and this . I intend to use the mini server for a captive portal system displaying advertising and promotions to wireless clients.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSuse 11.2 and kde, I'm trying to set up a screensaver. All the facilities seem to be there when I go System>Desktop and set the required details, but then I find the screensaver is non-operative, the screen just going blank after the preset time delay.
The set-up system does do the demo of the screensaver OK, so the software for it must be there and at least partly accessible. But it doesn't seem to get through to the system.
Suse and I can't get the Atlantis screensaver to run. The screen goes black.he other savers run ok. Is there anything I can do to run it?

So, I know it's using the BCM4321 chipset and wl driver. Ubuntu detected this card without any trouble, and I was able to use the "Additional Drivers" application to get it running before disconnecting my ethernet.
The card works well, and is very stable until I try to download a file larger than a few MB, or try to play a video stored on my home network. As soon as I try either of those, my computer locks up hard. No error messages. Just a hard lockup that I can't get out of with anything short of holding down the power button on my case until it cuts the power supply.
wat is the advantage of introducing softlock feature in rhel? How user/admin will be benifitted if softlockup events are occoured? on the contrary, server dies if softlock happens.We hardly can take some preventive action against softlockups, but most of the times we are not able to do anything about softlockups?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBack when I used openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.x I used the KDE-specific version of blueproximity found here: K-Blueproximity KDE-Apps.org. The thing that made it great was that it integrated kscreensaver.
It hasn't been updated in a couple years and isn't compatible with 4.3.x so I'm using the non-KDE-ified standard blueproximity package. For the most part it works. Based on comments I found somewhere I'm running the following command to lock the screen:

The problem is that the unlock command doesn't work. My monitors will reactivate and the screensaver will display but in order to actually unlock I have to hit a key/move the mouse and enter my password.

I'm running 11.2. My screen saver has been working fine since the begining in December, but now when I run VLC or fldigi my screen saver will kick on for only a few minutes then it will pop back to the log in screen as if I had moved my mouse or hit a key on the keyboard.

I am using opensuse 11.2 Gnome. Screensaver is spoiling video streaming and I have to manually stop it every time. There are options in media players to stop screensaver but when I watch videos online it seems like there is no global option to stop it. Is there a way to resolve this issue?

When I left the machine the screen saver kicked in and wouldn't let meback on with my password I chose during installation (and the only password I chose!) Re-booting the machine sorted the problem...until next time! I have now disabled the lock out for the screen saver so things ought to work now, but why did it do this? New with openSuse!

I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?
I think it is very annoying, that kde slideshow screensaver does not rotate images according to the jpeg exif information. I've found a bug report from 2005 for this topic Bug 103282 - no exif-rotation in slideshow) but as far as I see it still does not work. Any idea how can I set up kde to rotate the images?

After upgrading xorg-x11-server to 7.5_1.9.0-62.2.x86_64 from Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.3/x86_64 after a suggestion to fix a different problem, I noticed that the screensaver seems to work fine as mentioned above. However, I've noticed now that when the screen starts to dim before applying the actual screensaver I apparently can't cancel the screensaver initiation until after the screen finishes dimming (that is, goes completely black) and the screensaver actually starts. No amount of mouse gestures, clicks or key strokes will cancel the screensaver once the screen starts to dim until the screensaver itself starts running.

This started happening about a week ago and I cant remember installing any xine related updates, but was wondering if anyone knows how to make xine keep the system active to prevent this. My Ubuntu Karmic running system experiences random lockups. There is no pattern in when it will happen, it can go for days without one, or happen every couple hours. Only thing I can notice is that it happens most often when I run Firefox, but when it happens, it happens regardless of me having Firefox open on a website with lots of Flash content or not. When the lockup happens, I cannot move the mouse - the led light on my mouse shuts off, I can't move the cursor, the whole UI becomes unrensponsive, there is no blinking lights on the keyboard, REISUB does not work, only hitting the reset button on my case helps. After reboot, there are no indications of errors in any of the logs that I can see.I have ran memtest for 24 hours, and it completed without errors.

Today I found out how to change theme in OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit. I'm running KDE 4.4. Naturally I went to KDE-Look.org and trawled it through for eye-candy. I got this HAL-9000 boot splash: HAL-9000 KDE-Look.org
Its a .gz file and uncompressed its called .xpm, I think its just an image, that I should put somewhere, but I don't know where. I tried the bootloader settings through yast, though it didn't tell me anything.
Secondly I got a screensaver, which I'm supposed to compile and install: KCometen4 KDE-Look.org
I tried following these instructions, as best as I could:

KCometen4 also comes with a simple configure script that should work for a generic local install. If it doesn't suit your needs, you will need to edit the cmake settings by hand.
Quick installation steps:
Cmake's equivalent to 'make distclean' is 'rm -rf build'.
If you do a local installation, you might not see KCometen4 in the Screen Saver Settings module. In that case, you will need to do one of two things.
First, you can set the $KDEDIRS environment variable in your X session startup script so it includes your local installation prefix:

It mentions some Q_WS_WIN, Q_WS_QWS and Q_WS_MAC, that it doesn't find. Could that be the problem.
I tried to see if the new screensaver got into the screensaver menu, it didn't.
