Software :: How Do I Troubleshoot Lagging System

Jul 29, 2011

I have a laptop with SL6 installed on it.If I run 'top' i can see that the whole system just sticks/freezes for a moment here and there. The mouse becomes unresponsive during this time, *everything* freezes for a moment.I've put 'top' on with an interval of .1, and there isn't a particular program hitting the top of this list when it happens.

Ubuntu :: System Lagging When Connecting External Monitor?

Dec 31, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS netbook edition and everything goes well except for one thing.

When I connect my lcd monitor to the vga port the system lags. If I listen to music and browse web pages at the same time, the sound skip and when the page stop loading, music is ok. Also, the mouse skip. If I do circle with it on the desktop without doing anything else, it will skip.

The strange thing if I remove the external monitor and reboot the system everything comes back to normal.

I had Intrepid Ibex for 2 years without any problems. I remember a post saying that powernowd should be disable, but can't find the process from the startup list anymore.

Ubuntu :: Mouse And System Freezing/lagging/hanging?

May 7, 2011

since installing 11.04 on a computer that was running 10.04 perfectly, the system hangs for a split second every 10 seconds or so. If you make little circles with the mouse pointer you will see it jump position when the computer hangs briefly. If you are listening to audio or watching video then this also hangs for the same very short length of time.

I had the exact same problem when I tired going to 10.10 and so had to go back to 10.04. I was hoping it may just be an issue with that version but it seems not. The computer is: 1.6GHz Intel Core Solo, 1GB Memory, the motherboard is a Jetway Mini ITX board with integrated Intel graphics. It has no problem running the 3D stuff in Unity (or any of the old gnome desktops). Changing to 2D or turning off desktop effects in 10.10 does nothing to solve the problem. 10.04 seems to be the last time Ubuntu worked properly with the computer.

Fedora :: System Freezes Randomly - How To Troubleshoot

Mar 26, 2010

I am running the Nvidia driver. My system freezes randomly. I've had to reboot my system over 5 times today alone. When it freezes, everything is frozen, even the second hand on the analogue clock. One more issue, and I'm not sure if it's related, my stupid screen goes black after 5 minutes of no typing or mouse movement. This never happended when I first installed it. The issue just started within the last 3 weeks. Kpackage Kit is hidden. I was using it to do my automatic updates. Now I just use yum. between the time I first installed Fedora 12 and now, something has happened to my build to cause these issues.

Ubuntu :: Lucid - Random System Lockups - How To Troubleshoot?

May 14, 2010

Since upgrading to lucid, I have been experiencing regular system lockups. About once a day, my X desktop will disappear and I'll see a TTY with a few old console messages and at that point everything is completely frozen and I must hard reboot.

I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Fix Lagging Audio In VLC?

Well I couldnt find another torrent of it, so I went ahead and downloaded it. The audio is off by like .1-.3 seconds. How can I fix this in VLC? I have V 2.28.1.I went through the repositories and redownloaded VLC, but I cant even get the advanced options open. Ive been using Ubuntu for a few months now. I remember when I had windows I could go into the advanced options and manually change the timing for the audio, but like I said, I cant even get into the advanced options on this one.

Debian Configuration :: Backport Version Lagging Behind On Armhf

Mar 17, 2016

On my raspberry pi 3 with debian jessie I'd like to install a new version of ejabberd (xmpp/jabber server). For some platforms, the latest version 16.02 is available under jessie-backports, but for armhf, it is not: in the table at the bottom of <https://packages.debian.org/jessie-backports/ejabberd>, next to armhf is the version 16.01 listed in red, instead of 16.02 in green as for amd64 etc. What do these colours mean, and why the difference in versions? Will 16.02 become available for armhf as well in the (near) future, or is this an indication of a more serious problem?

Jessie's older version 14.07 does not offer the features I need, and 16.01 does not run at all; hence my hopes are pinned on 16.02.

Ubuntu :: Computer Lagging - Cursor Will Disappear And No Letters Will Appear - CPU Spikes

Jan 9, 2010

For the last several days my laptop has been "lagging". When typing (such as now) the cursor will disappear and no letters will appear for a second or I get doubling letters. Example: the word "laptop" will come out as "laaptoppp". When I hover the cursor over a link it will sometimes not highlight it right away. When I scroll up or down in Fire Fox or in my folders the screen will move a little, freeze, and then shoot down (or up) very quickly. Often Ctrl-c simply won't work. Plus several other things that all add up to being very frustrating.

I have the system monitor applet on a panel and I've noticed my CPU spiking periodically to 100%. When it happens it's rythmic, like this: A....A....A....A....A.... and then stops after a while. I've watched the processes and I'm fairly sure it's xorg doing it. My wife complained to me about her desktop doing similar things about a day before I saw that my laptop is doing this. I am fairly computer literate (no expert but no novice either) and I am totally stumped. Back in my Windows days (long, long ago in a...etc. etc.) I'd have said virus but here? Not so sure.

Jun 21, 2009

I have 2 dedicated servers, one with RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) and one with RTL8111/8168B (rev 01) both running centos 5.3, the problem is like this, all things run great on the dedicated server with NIC RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) until we run backup (cpanel backup) after the backup is finish the server lags , no high load, just lags, the server is a 8 GB ram, i7 quad core, so there is no load problem or someting like this, the second server has also cpanel on it and it has no lag but it has RTL8111/8168B (rev 01) , we think that the problem is with the RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) should we update the driver ?

Here is the output from it:

Fedora :: Cannot Login - How To Troubleshoot

Aug 9, 2009

I recently installed F11 only to find my soundcard wasn't supported (Asus Xonar Essence STX). I read around a bit and saw that kernel 2.6.30 supported it, so I upped the kernel to 2.6.34

So I configured/compiled my kernel, restarted and it showed up fine in the boot loader. Only problem I have is when I go to login through the login prompt, it acts like it is going to login only to get kicked back out to the login prompt again. I tried to login through the terminal view.... everything checks out there.

I am fairly new to linux in general so I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. I tried finding an error in it but I couldn't find anything.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot Into 9.10 / Troubleshoot It?

Apr 8, 2010

I was trying to get rid of some sound issues, in the process I removed Pulseaudio, then I found a post with a couple of packages from a ppa that were made for using Alsa without pulseaudio. I can't find the link now as I'm on a different pc, but 1 package was named Gnome applet, another Gnome media (I think) and I can't recall the third. It really did nothing so I removed them and reinstalled the Pulseaudio packages to atleast get some sound back. I got right back where I started until I rebooted.

Now it gets to the splash screen, flickers a couple times and I get a giant generic login screen If I log into that, I go back to the splash screen and the same login all over again. I tried to repair packages with the recovery mode but it didn't do any good. I also tried renaming xorg.conf just for the hell of it so a new one would be made but that really didn't do anything either.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Response - How To Troubleshoot?

Jan 11, 2010

My Kubuntu installation (9.10) boots up normally and seems to run fine, other than it is very slow to respond to inputs or change screens/ applications etc. It can take 5-10 seconds to respond to simple requests like changing from firefox to dolphin by clicking in the taskbar. It is dual boot with XP, which also seems sluggish, but is bearable.

The computer is barely useable in Kubuntu because of the slow response. I had 9.04 installed before, same problem. I tried searching for drivers for the on board video, thinking that might be it, but came up empty.

Fedora Installation :: F12 Kernel Not Syncing / Troubleshoot This?

Dec 3, 2009

I did a yum upgrade from Fedora 11 to Fedora 12. I can still use the Fedora 11 kernel just fine. When I try to boot with the Fedora 12 kernel, it failed during udev with "Kernel Panic. Not syncing. Out of memory and no killable processes."

I have no clue how to troubleshoot this problem since I cannot get the Fedora 12 kernel to any usable state. I've removed the kernel and reinstalled it multiple times. I've installed random firmware packages suggested throughout the web. I've tried to boot to console-only. Everything I do produces the same result - a kernel panic. Is there any magic trick to make the kernel stop panicking and actually boot up?

So far I have been able to fix the problem by manually running fsck. Ubuntu :: Net No Longer Connects Within VM (W7 Host) / Troubleshoot This?

Sep 18, 2010

I've been running an Ubuntu VM (10.04 LTS) on my Win7 (Home Premium 64bit) desktop successfully for several months now using VMPlayer (v3.1.1). My problem began when I booted up the VM today - my wife decided to reboot the PC without gracefully closing down my applications when Windows told her that she needed to reboot to complete security updates.

When I booted up the VM, the Ubuntu desktop went right back to the exact same state that it was in before the host reboot - the same programs were open, I didn't need to log in, etc. However... I now have no networking. The network icon (NetworkManager Applet 0. shows the red exclamation point. If I click on Auto eth0, it attempts to connect for a bit, and then says "offline".

My VMware Player settings for this VM are configured for bridged networking, and the "network adapter" icon shows online. If I go into the VMWare Player settings and change the networking to NAT, and then click on Auto eth0 again, the networking comes online. However, I don't want NAT - I want this Ubuntu client exposed to my network with it's own IP address.

At this point, I'm really not sure if the problem is within Ubuntu or within VMWare Player, or something on my Win7 host. I have zero skill at troubleshooting within Ubuntu - still fairly new to the linux scene. My Windows firewall is turned off. DHCP is enabled on my network, and the router is available.

Any ideas on how I might further troubleshoot this problem?
