View 3 RepliesI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid -- I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 which also had kubuntu desktop installed. After entering my username and password in the user login screen, I'm prompted for my key-ring password even though my key-ring password and my user login password are the same. How can I have key-ring password prompt automatically use the password entered at user login?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a couple of updates that the update manager said were important the other night and now I can't get past the default key ring password screen. Only the mouse works (USB); the keyboard has no response.I know the password but I just can't get the keyboard to work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis afternoon, I tried to change the password, for the windows access via Samba, but I goofed.
While logged in with a Putty session, I typed code...
It asked me for the new password after the first line, then again after the second line as expected.
In retrospect I probably should not have typed the first line.
Now, however, I can't log in via putty. When I attempt to, it asks for my password, but neither the new nor old password works.
I DO have access to the Samba shares from other windows machines using the new password so that is OK.
It is a non GUI 10.04 server with one user, mark.
Help, please, how do I fix it?
Ideally, I guess I want the old password for the log in, but the new password for Samba shares.
I have ubuntu installed in a partition on my computer and when I installed it i made it so that you don't have to provide a password to logon to the user account. How can I change this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am wondering if there is a way for me to logon without being prompted fory user password - I am guaranteed to be the only one using this machine.(I recall seeing a cli code that set this but after lots of searching can't find it)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI migrated an old SuseLinux 10 box to Debian (Lenny) a couple months ago, and apparently no one noticed you can't change your password. Root can do it because passwd doesn't ask root for a password, but no one else can (although they can log in, passwd doesn't recognize their login password when they attempt to set a new password and it asks).I changed authentication to use blowfish when I setup the server (because the SuseLinux 10 system used it) and apparently the passwd command doesn't work with that. Apparently I need to update another configuration file or possibly get a different program to update the passwd file if I use blowfish. Any ideas?
The weird thing is that it can generate a blowfish hash to set a new password, but apparently can't generate one to authenticate the user.something changed recently and it is no longer generating a blowfish hash when setting a new password. It is generating a hash with only 13 characters. And I can clearly see that many users have changed their passwords.
I have succesfully set up authentication manually in Ubuntu so users can log on with Windows Active Directory accounts and have their network drives mapped automatically using pam_mount.
Please note due to the setup I can't make any changes to the Windows 2k3 server.
If a user wants their password reset I can change it to a generic password. When they next log on to a Windows computer with the generic password it will automatically ask them to change it to something else.
Is there anyway to get this to work with Ubuntu 10.10? At the moment when logging onto Ubuntu with an account that is in this state the message Please change your password appears, it then proceds to log on without prompting to change the password and natually it won't map the drives etc.
having a hard time mapping a drive from a windows xp PC to a Linux Share. I have edited the SMB.conf file to include the share I want to connect to. when I try try map a drive to the Linux share using NET USE M: \192.168.15.5pairing I get the following error:"system error 1326 has occurred.Logon filaure: unknown user name or bad password."I use a username and password that is valid on the Linux server and has access to the Share.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOur system is based on RH4 and is using pam_tally and faillog to record failed attempts and to lock users out after 5 attempts. We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have got a RHEL 5.6 server configured to authenticate via a Windows 2008 domain controller via LDAPS.Everything is working fine, except from the following: When I create a new user in Active directory and check the option "user must change password at next logon", the new user cannot logon and gets an "access denied" message. In /var/log/secure, I find the following:
Mar 1 14:43:21 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=192.168.3.12 user=testuser2
Mar 1 14:43:21 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: pam_ldap: error trying to bind as user "CN=CPSS Testuser 2,OU=IBM,DC=cpss,DC=smarterplatform,DC=com" (Invalid credentials)
Mar 1 14:43:23 cpssvn10 sshd[5363]: Failed password for testuser2 from 192.168.3.12 port 4583 ssh2
As soon as I uncheck the "user must change ..." option, the user can log on without problems. Also password change via the passwd command works.
I had the same problem with normal ubuntu, wubi or even after instaling it in a virtual pc
I've got a wireless router with a WEP security, when I choose my connection and put in the key it just tries for some time and then ask me again for the WEP key. And it goes like this on and on and on, I've tried to connect at some firends gome with the same kind of connection and it doesn't work either.
I think that in an older version I did connect to an unprotected connection but I cannot take out the protection because it is my roomsmate wifi.
This is a new installation. My system login password is recognized and that same passwd is recognized by the Software Centre, but not with sudo in the terminal.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and I installed the unity desktop by using sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. However when I try to open the synaptic package manager it won't recognize my password. It just keeps asking me for the administrator password. I can open update manager which also needs the admin password. This is a fresh install all I have done is installed the ubuntu desktop. I am currently trying to install KDE desktop to see if it works on there. I also have had this problem on my laptop which runs 11.04 x64 desktop edition. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me? and is there a fix? also what is the terminal command to launch the packet manager? edit. It started working on my laptop a week or so ago after I did updates. So I'm not sure if the server version of unity or the packet manager is just behind? I have run the update manager on my server and it says its uptodate.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Fedora 11 64bit on a new hard disk, using Intel 975BX2 motherbord, 3Gbyte RAM, 320Gbyte hard disk etc., USB mouse and keyboard. The installation went fine, but when I enter the password for the boot (I assume GRUB was installed) it fails to recognise the password. Do this three times and the boot segment ??? fails to initialise.
I recall a linux magazine i buy indicating that you have to copy and paste the password manually after installation, but i cannot recall the article date. Is this a problem - the password protection for the GRUB boot loader does not work at installation time when using the graphical interface ?. I did not use any odd characters - basic letters and numbers.
While trying to download themes for fedora 12,I get to the end it ask for my PW (in sudo) then says it is incorrect. When in graphic inter phase all my passwords are excepted.I've been reading the linux manuel. but can't find the anwser. If I am to put anouther password in where do I do that and how.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Linix 7.0 which I purchased several years back but never got around to installing it. I installed it on an older Compauge notebook . At the requested time I entered the user name and password in the setup program. But now when I try to log in , it does reconize any of the data I entered. Is there a way to reset it. I can't even get into the computer to delete the installation and re-install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn getting my Fedora 15 installation up and running (which it mostly is, now, thanks to help from LQ!) I am at the point of installing thunderbird so that I can send/receive email. It seems to install fine, but when setting up the account it says that my username/password is not recognized. I know that I am typing them in right, and if I go directly to gmail with firefox rather than through thunderbird they work OK. Any thoughts? (I am also posting to the thunderbird forum at mozilla.)

I have experimented with different parameters (user, group, interval, time, flags) in the start section, nothing worked.
I have read this tutorial to get started. The installed version of isdnlog is 1:3.12.20071127-0ubuntu6.
Here you see the files:

Because of a hard disk failure I had to buy a new disk and reinstall Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to the install I was running the live cd version of 10.04. When I connected to my wireless network and entered the password the key manager wanted me to enter a password to protect the network password. Now every time I boot up the system the network will not automatically connect. (It used to do this). Now I have to click on the network manager and select my network. When I do this I get the key manager asking for a password.
So how do I stop the key manager nonsense and get the network to connect automatically as it once did.
I recently installed UBuntu 11.04 and dual booting it with WIndows 7, I really like linux and considering removing W7 and only have Ubuntu But the problem is I can only connect when using an ethernet cable, when it comes to wirelesss, I type my password, yet a ring keep rotating and it never connects. My laptop is HP-G62

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having issues getting the modem it the dial-in server I have set up to answer on the correct ring. I have the /etc/inittab set:
Code: S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -n 7 -x 6 -D ttyS2 yet I have to play with 'init q' and minicom to get it to answer on ring 7. Then a reboot destroys the setting and I have to go through the whole hassle again and it goes back to answering on the first ring.
This is not acceptable. This dial-in server is only a very back door into my network. It is only turned on when needed. Most of the time it is not powered up. When it is turned on it is by a non-tech person with out the ability to jump through the hoops to get it to answer on the correct ring.
Ideally I want this modem to just listen to the line after it stops ringing to check for a data signal and if it does not find it just hang up. If it finds a data signal then establish a connection and all that. That way it does not interfere with answering machine on the line. Google has yielded very little info about setting up dial-in servers. Modems are not used very much any more.
