Networking :: Capture A Dropped Or Rejected Firewall Packet?

Jul 3, 2011

I'm running ubuntu 11.04, and using firestarter for my firewall. Logging events, all good, but I'd like to be able to (tcp)dump the packets being dropped/rejected. Wireshark is great after the event, but can I hook iptables and tcpdump together somehow so the system logs the entire packet rather than the summary when it says "no"? I've had a quick look/google, but can't find anything. I'm sure somebody must have wanted to do this before - any pointers people?

PS - will keep looking and post the answer if I find one....

Programming :: Weird Recv() Buffer Back To Front??

Sep 20, 2010

I have been developing some code which I have been testing an another i386 system. However I have been getting some weird data received on a socket I am communicating with some 3rd party hardware, I have opened a socket to read data on the hardware's telnet port. The data being read is as expected and my code appears to function correctly.

However I have now began testing the code on a target platform, this platform is of a better spec than my development system. When I read data from the socket using recv(), all the expected data has not been read.A chunk of data from the beginning is missing and a portion of data that would be at the end is now at the beginning of the buffer. I'll try and illustrate this below.

Programming :: Perl Disassembling DNS Packet?

I'm a newbie trying to modify a DNS-formatted UDP packet. I am piping DNS replies through a firewall queue where I get the packet with $udp_obj->data provided by NetPacket::UDP. Is there a command line application that will break down the udp packet for me so I can extract an answer? Cpan doesn't have a module to do this. One can *create* udp packets programmatically or get them off of libpcap, but I don't need either.

Programming :: Perl - UDP Server Receive / Send Packet To Host

The problem I am running into is after I receive the packet from a host I need to be able to send a custom made packet(I'm using RawIP / NetPacket to make my packet) back to this host. The only way to do this is seemingly through the send() function. This function however doesn't appear to allow me to specify which host to send my packet to.

Programming :: Best / Safest Way To Capture Root Password

May 31, 2011

I have a script which when invoked will generally su into being a number of different users (for those that have read other threads from me, you will know.I am building my own user based package management system).Whilst 75 - 80% of the time there will be no need to be anyone other than the original user, there are times when the root password is required. Currently this is presented to the administrator at exactly the point in the script that it is required. At times this may be more than once and it may also happen for multiple users in a row.

What would be the best / safest method (in your opinion) of capturing the password at the start of the script and then delivering it when required?I have looked at expect ( I am not at all familiar ), but on the examples dealing with passwords, that I could find, they all seem to store the password in a simple bash like variable (which does not excite me at all from a security point).I can also potentially go down the sudo road, but the issue here is that I would either have to find a list of commands that an entire group can have access to without passwords (doesn't sound safe) or I am back to square one of then requiring a password for each individual user to be entered, which if at the start would still need to be captured and saved until necessary. So as I have said, I am open to any and all (constructive) advice

Programming :: Cannot Capture SCP Progress Bar In Output Redirect

Oct 31, 2010

I would really like to capture the output of scp and my file's progress. Scp updates the transfer rate every 1 second, and I will like to save the transfer rate at every update. So for example, if the file transfer takes 30 seconds, I would like 30 reports of the transfer rate.

The output looks like:
Code:
file.dat 1% 3664KB 938.5KB/s 05:48

Whenever I try a simple redirect like:
Code:
scp file.dat 192.168.1.100:~/ &> output
... it does not save the rate at every update, it only shows the final rate.

If I try using typescript by starting "script" ... it's the same deal.
