Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connects But Can't See The Network

Jan 9, 2010

I've got a Zotac MAG HD-ND01 with XBMC live installed. This is built on Karmic Koala and runs very nicely through the wired NIC.

I configure the box using a cable. I'm using WPA2-PSK and it is clearly authenticating OK.. It gets an IP address.. the AP shows a connection to the box. My XP laptop connects to the access point OK.. just can't connect to the box via the wireless, and it can't see the network using wireless.

I have followed a number of threads on connecting Atheros 9XXX wireless [URL] but no joy.

Also, can Ubuntu connect to the AP at any speed greater than 54MB? My windows PC connects at 144MB+ . Will ndiswrappers connect at those sorts of speeds?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connects After 5-10 Minutes?

Feb 1, 2011

My wireless connection always worked. When I log in, I already have internet access.I went on holiday and connected to several other networks. Now the laptop will not connect anymore. Sometimes after 5-10 minutes. When I forse to connect ("Connect to hidden wireless network), the laptop connects after several seconds. But not automatically. My wireless modem uses WPA2, MAC filtering and has a hidden access point.I use Ubuntu 10.4 on a HP Probook laptop. In "Network connections", under "Wireless", the "Connect Automaticly" and "Available to all users" are selected. When connected, the signal strenght is very good.

Ubuntu Networking :: RTL8191SE Wireless Connects But Fails?

May 24, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario CQ42-195TX laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) installed on it and fully updated. It has a Realtek RTL8191SE wireless chipset which I am having trouble with - its wired connection is working perfectly. After starting up, I am able to see and connect to wireless networks. Once connected, the wireless functions correctly for a very brief period (under 10 seconds) in which I am able to access the Internet and so forth. The connection then stops working - although it doesn't get disconnected. When I say it "stops working", I mean I can no longer access the Internet and trying to ping the router gives me a "Destination Host Unreachable" error. If I disconnect from the network I cannot reconnect, nor can I connect to any other network.- though I can still see the list of available networks.

I thought that maybe this was a 64-bit issue, but I tried the Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit live CD and experienced the same problem. Please note that while this thread is about the RTL8191SE chipset, the RTL819xSE chipsets all use the same driver.Below are the results of various commands while connected to the network but after the connection has stopped functioning correctly:lspci -nn | grep "Realtek"

Ubuntu Networking :: System Crash When Wireless Connects?

Jun 17, 2011

I've recently installed release 11.04 and am trying to get wireless networking operational. I'm using a netgear wg111t usb wireless adapter. I've installed ndiswrapper and have got the netgear windows drivers installed ok. My problem is when I try to connect wirelessly I get a system crash, think it tends to be called a kernel panic in linux. The network connection is confirmed and about 5-10 seconds later the crash happens. I've updated the linux kernel to 2.6.39-0-generic but thats not helped.

I can connect with a cable but that is somewhat limiting.

Fedora Networking :: 8 Freezes When Wireless Connects?

I am using Fedora 8 on my laptop, newly installed, I can see the network card(Linksys WPc54G v2) and Network Manager sees the wireless router, however as soon as I tell it to connect my computer freezes and I have to restart. I searched for solutions but all I found was Ubuntu problems.

Actually it seems that the trigger is when the keyring comes up and asks for a password. As soon as I start typing the pass it locks.

Ubuntu Networking :: NM Connects - No Icon / Choice Of Wireless - Error Could Not Connect To Wpa_supplicant

Sep 15, 2010

First- clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04, with default network manager installed, I had a taskbar icon, and it could see the available wireless networks, could not connect to them, even the ones with no security. Purged all network manager files suggested in various threads here, Installed wicd- it could see all available networks, could connect to unsecured networks, but not to my own secured network. Password was correct in the wicd/configurations file. Removed wicd, and reinstalled network manager from synaptic. I have to network manager applet. When I try to add it to the notification area with alt-f2, applet-nm, I get a brief flash of something in the notification area, but no applet.

System=>Preferences=>network connections shows no wireless connections, but I'm obviously connected to something (probably my neighbors unsecured network) since I"m reaching this webpage. I tried to run sudo wpa_cli from the terminal to see what network the computer is connected to, and it gives me this error:

Quote:

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Unlock Hey Ring To Get Wireless To Come Up On Boot?

Jul 17, 2010

I have made a computer for my 11 year old son. I installed 11.3 on the drive. It all works now except for one thing. The wireless wants to access the key ring but it's locked until I give it the password The problem with this is ntp doesn't set the time properly because the network is not up until the password is input. And even then it doesn't work because the server it attached to ( god knows where) isn't giving the correct time. I want to unlock the keyring permanently. This system doesn't run a nuclear missile silo and it's behind a pretty good fire wall. So security isn't a big concern. SO how do I unlock the hey ring to get the wireless to come up on boot?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 On Hp Tm2 2090eo - Wireless Doesn't Seem To Work - Fan Seemed To Be Off Or Rotating Very Slowly

Oct 2, 2010

Just tested the new Maverick rc on this computer. Few issues that I had where.Screen was blank (turns out that the screen brightness is set to 0...), that was easily fixed with fn + f3. It seems that this only happened with the first few boots Wireless doesn't seem to work. Will investigate more in a little Works now with the broadcom propriety drivers Fan seemed to be off or rotating very slowly with the result that the computer started to heat up very fast and started to burn my lap and there started to be graphical issues on the screen. Luckily after turning the computer off and cooling it for a little while things returned to normal. I just wonder what might have happened if I hadn't turn off... (overheating was noticeable after about 3min and turned the computer off in about 5min).

It seems that ubuntu is not able to adjust the fan speed! Resulting in system overheating. So if I boot with hot computer, the fan speeds up at the boot and I'm able to use ubuntu. But if I have "fan always on" option off in bios and boot with cold computer that spells big trouble! Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
After installing ATI propriety drivers. Wasn't able to startx until deleted xorg.conf from /etc/X11/. One thing that noticed was that after this fan speed is now changing correctly! After deleting xorg.conf lost the right mouse button.

Networking :: Rotating Capture Files Using Tcpdump?

Apr 6, 2010

I would like to set up tcpdump to rotate log file every 1 hour and retain files for the lat 14 days but I don't think any combination of -C and -W would allow me to do that (Atleast I haven't been able to figure it out), so I am trying to rotate the files every X number of MB and retain the last 20 files. This seems to be fairly simple with the '-C X -W 20' option but I am having some trouble in customizing the names of the log files. I have tried '-w capture-$(date +%Y-%M-%d-%H:%M-)' thinking that each file would start with the current date and time but all files are using the date and time when the capture was started so the only difference is the number at the end (which is done by -W). if I can customize the names of the file so that it has the date and time when the capture in started. In fact if I can do that, I dont need the numbers that '-W' appends at the end but I dont know how to get rid of them.

Ubuntu :: Disconnection And Connects To Unavailable Wifi - Authentication Required By Wireless Network

Jun 8, 2010

When my router switches off... the wifi signals go off... then why the hell ubuntu keeps on connecting to that very wifi like hell and when doesnt connect shows the prompt to manually connect... with the wifi key already filled in... whats the use of saving the key when it has to ask the question from me either to connect or not?? and if its isnt available... just wait when its available.. and for the prompt,i have only option to cancel(because wifi isnt available at that moment if i select connect it again tries to connect like hell..which it cant) and if i cancel it wont auto-connect when wifi does get available! what the heck?

Windows has this done the right way... when the wifi isnt available.. it dissconnects silently.. and when it becomes available connects silently.. why isnt this been done this way in ubuntu??

Ive attached an image..one can see in the image that it says "authentication required by wireless network" when there isnt any.. as router has gone down!

And the second thing i want to report is that there is no way to report this bug from ubuntu... the launchpad.net talks of going through bug reporting process which is done against a definite package... now how does a user know which package would be causing this error?? there should be a more clear process of reporting such bugs to ubuntu team... which a common man using ubuntu( ubuntu says its most user friendly of all distros right?) can report..

SUSE / Novell :: OpenSUSE Connects To Wireless Network But Not Internet?

Mar 9, 2010

In openSuse I can connect to a wireless network. It says that it is connected, and I can open the router page (http://192.168.1.1/basic.html). But I cannot load any other pages. Nothing else recognizes internet either; I tried using konqueror, YAST and wget with the command line, and none of them could load anything. It is not a router problem or a wireless card problem because both Ubuntu and Kubuntu can connect, from the same computer. I know this is odd because in the only other thread I could find with this issue, it was a different distro and installing openSuse seemed to fix it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Connects But No Internet / Why Is So?

Nov 23, 2010

Let me start by saying that I am new to ubuntu, and that I always use forums as a last resort.

I installed ubuntu 10, and immediately after the Wifi card deected my network name, and actually connected to it, but then I opened up firefox and....no internet.

Since then I have been trying to fix this problem, and after some research I found out that my card (PCI Cwp-905) is RT2760 based, and I downloaded the linux RT2760 drivers for it.

The driver folder contained a readme file with commands you should enter to install it, and other setup files.
The problem: every command I typed in didn't work. I tried "make", and then "sudo make", but just got permission denied each time. I am now at a dead end. (Please note that I changed my directory to the folder location before doing this)

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? If you want I can attach the driver files.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connects But No Data Transfer?

Jul 17, 2010

I bought a laptop today (Compaq Presario cq62) and loaded Ubuntu 10.04 on it. Everything has been running great, but the Wifi has been acting up. It connects to my router for a few seconds to a minute, and then stops all data transfer (although it still shows that I am connected to the internet). My other computers running Mac work fine. I took my laptop to another place with wifi, and it did the same thing.

The data transfer seems to stop when there is a lot going on. Whenever I try downloading new software, it gets to exactly 5% then stops. If I disconnect the wifi, and reconnect it works again for another minute. I may need to be walked through any terminal codes.

On that note, where would be a great place to read up on using Ubuntu (online book?)

Ubuntu Networking :: Connects To Internet But Not To Home Network?

Aug 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit on an old desktop (1.5ghz Pentium 4, 20GB hard drive, 768MB RAM) a week or two ago, at the same time that I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on an even lower performance IBM tower server. The server functions perfectly and my other (Windows XP) desktop recognized it from the start, as did the Ubuntu desktop. However, I rearranged a few ethernet cables the other day without turning off the desktops and ever since my Ubuntu machine does not recognize my server, even though all of the devices are connected via ethernet cable to a linksys router and it connects to the internet without a problem. I'm a linux newbie - this is my first move away from Windows - and I don't know where to turn. Far more confusing is the fact that, when I boot from a LiveCD, the network is recognized and I can read/manipulate files on my server without a problem. Oh, and I briefly flirted with OpenSUSE KDE (not as noob-friendly as Ubuntu, so I'm back) and encountered the same problem.

Needless to say, booting from the hard drive is preferable to booting from CD every time
