Does anyone know them or know any other keyboard-based options for using the terminal in AWN? I am running openSUSE 11.2 and I am trying to make the key combination Alt + ` open a terminal. No keyboard combination I try works, not even Ctrl + X or anything, and I have tried both "Run a terminal" and "Open a terminal". I have logged out and back in, and even restarted, and it still doesn't work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWell, this is a problem that keeps on coming, and I never found a solution: Maybe it is just me misunderstanding how it should work, but:
1) do you confirm that, as a member of the group "fuse", I should be able to read the file?
2) of course, I could change the permission of the file, or read it as sudo, but sometimes this is not possible. how to achieve it then?
I updated Lucid yesterday, and when I restarted the user interface was changed to a more simple feeling display. This makes me think I'm stuck in a "basic" mode or something. I attached a screen shot, but to give you an idea ill describe some issues. For one thing the minimize buttons are now on the right. The volume control, which used to appear on the top right of the screen, is gone and my multimedia volume control buttons on my Inspiron 1420 no longer work. Furthermore, the command terminal is now white and the keyboard shortcuts for copy and past don't work.
Immediately after updating I also got an error message at login (which also appears different and gives options on bottom of screen like gnome Failsafe) which said something like "gnome default power management installed incorrectly...". I followed the advice of a forum thread that involved the purge command and that seemed to remedy that message.
I just bought a brand new Lenovo ThinkCentre A70z (All in One). View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
I upgraded to 11.04 today and wanted to reconfigure so that I could have the desktop cube again. Once I started trying to switch my settings for the cube configuration compiz asked whether I wanted to turn off various features and apparently among them was the control bar on the side and top of the screen. Now I log in to Ubuntu and I get my workspace and that's it. No control bars, just the workspace. I need to know a few things:
1) Has anyone else had this problem?
2) How do I get into the terminal from keyboard commands?
3) What terminal commands do I need to bring back at least the main toolbar so I can access programs.
Ubuntu 10.04 was in small slave-disk, and I put other bigger disk same type IDE/ATA.In first start I get message: "no such device....., grub rescue."Anyway, I make installation in this disk and and now after start message is: "error: out of disk, grub rescue. So now I can not use master/XP and no slave/Ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop screen broke (smashed) a while ago and I have been using Windows with an external monitor on it ever since. My main laptop, however, runs Ubuntu 10.04 which I prefer immensely so I installed it on my broken laptop in dual-boot with Windows. Everything was fine at first, it loaded by default into a dual-monitor mode, but that was easily changed to just the single external display.
The problem was when I installed the graphics card driver (a Nvidia one). It seemed to reset the configuration to just using the laptop's broken built-in monitor. From what I can tell, there is nothing wrong with the driver as the OS seems to be running fine (from the small corner of the screen which still works). Unfortunately, neither the FN-F4 key combination (which never worked on Windows either) nor unplugging/reinserting the HDMI cable resets the screen setting to let me use the attached monitor.
So my question is whether there is anything I can do using the full-screen terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1), or a keyboard shortcut, to change monitor or go to dual-monitor mode. I would prefer not to use it to just disable the graphics driver because the laptop is a Samsung r780 and the only reason I really want to use it is its great graphics card which is way better for editing stuff and 3d tasks than the old replacement I'm using at the moment.
I have Ubuntu Natty installed and I'm using German keyboard layout. If I try to change using CTRL-ALT-F1 into terminal then I have US keyboard instead of German. Howto change keyboard layout in the Terminal?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently upgraded a laptop of mine from 10.10 to 11.04 (Natty), and am having a few issues with it. I don't know how many of these are related to using Unity and how many are just due to the upgrade, but one of the main bugbears is keyboard shortcuts. I have always set the F12 key so that it opens a terminal window. I did this through the settings > Keyboard Shortcuts interface, but although I can (apparently) set this in Unity, it doesn't work. The setting is there, listed, but pressing F12 doesn't open a terminal. Neither does it if I set it to any other key.
I can create a new entry, to start xterm with F12, which works fine but this isn't quite the same as a terminal (it appears different on screen.) I also discover that CTRL+ALT+T doesn't open a terminal window either (as is suggested in a very useful list here: [URL] Have I missed something? Or am I being thick? (Quite possible ... )
Have strange problem when I get asked for my password in the terminal.Using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04. I was typing : sudo ufw status. When the keyboard asked me for my password then when I went to type in my password nothing typed. When I press the keyboard nothing happens. Just started today.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 9.10 installed and (thus far) working quite well. However, when I type in a command into Terminal (I was trying to install Amarok), the terminal asks for my password and the entire keyboard stops working. As in, I can hit any numerical or letter key, and nothing happens in the terminal but the blinking cursor. The specific command was "sudo apt-get install amarok", and then it asks for my password, and I'm not able to make an entry.
I've tried changing to a couple of the different Dell laptop keyboards in System>Preferences, but again, before typing the command into the terminal, everything is working fine (inside AND outside of the terminal). After the password prompt comes up and the keyboard stops working in terminal, all the character keys still work fine still outside of the terminal.
After a while away from Linux, I recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 on my home PC. Here is the problem: The terminal STINKS in general. Unfortunately, it appears that nothing has changed in the last 3 years in this particular area. I remember now that the terminal (keyboard mappings, colors) was one of the reasons I went with Fedora for my home PC a few years ago.
Short question: WHY is Ubuntu's so different, and why hasn't it been improved? I have a standard 104-key keyboard, yet when I try to edit with VI, the arrow keys don't map properly. You'd think that user feedback alone would have fixed this over 3 years time. Anyhow, how do I fix it?
The white background, minimal color terminal isn't very good. But I really need help getting the various keys (delete, home, end, arrow keys) to map properly. I went with Ubuntu because it seemed to be more ready "out of the box" and I don't need cutting edge like Fedora offers. I wanted more stability, etc.
I generally use gnome but with latest hulla-boo about graphics tempted me to check kde. where i found following problem to configure:
1) no keyboard shortcut to launch a terminal
2) my laptops dedicated volume control is not working
3) gnome package manager is not there, though i can use yum
I am trying to start a script via a keyboard shortcut. The trouble is, it runs fine when i start it from the terminal, either by opening a terminal and starting it there or by "double-click", but when I use the shortcut it loads, but doesn't work properly. This is probably because it asks for user input, which would be put in the terminal window. Is there a way to start a script in a terminal window by default?
