i have been using it since a friend suggested to use it a month or so ago. I have knowledge of computers so I am not ignorant of everything (I say this for the linux pros in case this is a simple solution, and I have checked many forums before actually posting this question with no luck) and have tried several options. My laptop freezes at random times with the caps lock light blinking which seems a little strange. the only correlation I can make to this problem is that every time I use only wifi without the ethernet cable plugged in it will freeze. I have read a few forums that say it could be a bug in the wireless card drivers and some suggest it could also be graphic card drivers but it seems to only happen when wifi is enabled.I am using an ASUS G73 series with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 graphics card, 8GB DDR3-1066 RAM, Atheros AR9285 802.11n Wireless LAN adapter, and an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz/2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L3 cache). I am also running Ubuntu 10.10 off of a 320 GB seagate Momentus and windows 7 off the stock 500 GB Seagate Momentus.

I installed Linux yesterday alongside windows vista. Everything went very smooth. I restarted the computer multiple times without issue, and the menu would pop up asking me which os to load. Everything was good. But today I attempted to boot up my computer and nothing happens. The screen just stay black. The lights come on on the laptop, but nothing else. Either I try to boot it and it goes on then off quickly, or it just sits there, still on, with a black screen. I don't know if this is related, but when I was messing around with ubuntu yesterday after I installed it, it would randomly freeze and my caps lock light kept blinking on and off. I was forced to restart when this happened and then everything would be ok.

I would like for someone else to try it. All you need are two keyboards (I have the one of the notebook and a usb one).
So now, if I turn Caps on with the notebook's keyboard, the external keyboard doesn't light up the Caps LED and vice-versa. Is this a normal behavior?

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. The Caps lock indicator on my keyboard is not working (always off). The Num lock indicator works fine. I have the same problem with other keyboards. The other keyboards work with Windows & DOS. This isn't a show-stopper, but I'd like to get it corrected as it's problematic when typing in passwords, etc. that have hidden fields.

Inspired by this question. I would like to remap Caps Lock to escape, but only when I am in vim. I would like to keep Caps Lock untouched while not in vim.

i think the motherboard is cooked but not sure...be4 i call them up and say wtf i want to make sure i have not missed anything (i dont think i have* ok the MO is a MSI g31tm-p21 and the processor is a intel celeron e3300. when i powered it on lights on front panel came on *case has temp readings and fan controls* all of that powered on...the two case fans power on and the processor powers on cd drive powers on and HDD powers on as well so the power box is working there is not a problem with that. i recheck all cabling and its all right i had jumped the cmos a few times now. and with the cmos jumped the M/O would not even TRY to turn on so that was good. it would only turn on when jumped the right away the *keep data* setting took the batt out and waited to let the cmos clear that way. still nothing and i am still getting no post screen. keyboard dos not light up nor dos the mouse

I purchased a lighted keyboard, on the net.
Black LED Lighted Keyboard W-9868BK USB
The scroll lock key is the key that turns the back light on/off. Num light works/caps light works, but the scroll lock light does not on F12 or Ubuntu Thinking it may be a soft ware problem after trying different usb slots, I dug out an old XP machine and it works.

I'm completely new to openSUSE and when I installed it, my wireless card isn't apparently found. The light on the keyboard doesn't turn on signaling there is a wireless card. I should have also said I'm using the KDE thing, not the GNOME.

I'm running fedora 13 on a Dell Latitude E6500. It's a dual 64-bit system.
It was working, but then I tried to swap caps lock and control.
I used:
System->Preferences->Keyboard
Layouts->USA->Options
Then, under Control Key Position, I selected swap caps lock and control.
Now, my keyboard won't work in the Keyboard Preferences test area or in any other window or when the screen-lock comes on.
I tried logging out. I tried rebooting. I tried deleting my .gnome2 directory. Nothing seems to work. I can use the keyboard on other accounts, so the keyboard is not the problem.

I am very new to Ubuntu and I need some help. My HP Pavillion WLAN light constantly blinks as it recieves data on the internet and I learned that I have to create and save a file: "sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/wlan.conf" and then paste the following at the end: "#1 means do not blink options iwlcore led_mode=1" but when I try to save it asks me for my sudo password which I don't have and it does not even register any key I press. It just blinks but does not acccept any key. Also how do you save the file in terminal?

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.

I am trying to find a good virtual keyboard that is in Japanese. there doesn't seem to be much options for virtual keyboards, let alone one in japanese. The only one I have found is xvkbd, but it is very limited and somewhat glitchy. I tried setting it to Japanese, but all that does is add a button to switch to japanese that you annoyingly have to hit every time you want to enter a character. And not only that, even though the keyboard is in hiragana, it inputs katakana. Are there any other options for a virtual Japanese keyboard, or at least a way to get xvkbd to input hiragana?

In (Gnome) Ubuntu there is a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Shift+(Up|Down|Left|Right) that allows the user to quickly move a window from one workspace to another. I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

Status: openSUSE 11.3; Fujitsu Tablet ST4110.I've managed to install successfully openSUSE 11.3 on my old Fujitsu Tablet 11.3. nomodeset needs to be used at GRUB boot. Now, at the login, when I click Others, and prompted to type a username, when I clicked on the virtual keyboard at the bottom right corner of my screen, the I-beam icon looses focus from the entry box, and each character pressed on the virtual keyboard does not appear on the entry box. When I try to click on the entry box, focus cannot be returned to the entry (ie. the I-beam icon does not flash at the entry box).

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell XPS M1530. Sometimes i get a _VERY_ loud beep-sound, eg when i run out of battery or, the case that has me coming here when i'm working in a virtual terminal (tty1-6) and hit backspace once too often, that is, when the command line is actually empty.Not that big of a deal you might think, but, especially when you're wearing good (read: possibly loud) headphones the experience is that god damn unpleasant that i'd like to make sure it won't happen again.Oh and well, just hitting mute (in gnome, which doesn't have a lot to do with tty1 anyways) won't do the job.

I imagine I'll have to install something, but Google has shed no light for me thus far. And just to clarify, when I say virtual terminal I mean the terminals accessed by CTRL+ALT+(F1-F6). I'm going to be doing a challenge/learning experience where I don't allow myself a graphical interface for a month. way around BASH through adaption. However, if I have to go a month without music I will go insane.
So, even if this is possible can I listen to music from the internet (....., playlist.com, etc.) or just music on my hard drive? And I'm not sure if this thread belongs in Desktop Environments or not, that section seemed to focus on graphical interface.

I cannot have any more than 47 characters on each line of my virtual terminal without everything on that line disappearing. The text is apparently still there, since commands that need more than 47 characters still work but the text stays hidden. After the text has been overlapped I can type as many characters as I like and it no longer overlaps, but my PS1 on that line and all previously overlapped text stays hidden.I'm almost certain that the problem is in my bash configuration since it happens in a terminal emulator as well as the virtual terminal.
