Mar 18, 2011I would like do add a new keyboard key combination for a function like Alt + F4.
for example shift + control + s.
Up to now, i was successful with exchanging the function Alt + F4.
But I don't like to exchange, because I need Alt + f4 and shift + control + s for the function close window at the same time.
So how can I add a new keyboard combination without to exchange?

Action: switch tabs
Actual Shortcut: Control+(Alt)pgUp/pgDown
New Shortcut: Control+Tab (as it is on Windows)
Action: activate combo boxes item lists
Actual Shortcut: Alt+Down or F4
New Shortcut: still don't know yet
I have not found a way of doing this under gnome-keyboard-properties or gconf-editor.
Ubuntu :: Cannot Start Terminal From Keyboard Shortcut (11.01 Unity)
May 22, 2011I've recently upgraded a laptop of mine from 10.10 to 11.04 (Natty), and am having a few issues with it. I don't know how many of these are related to using Unity and how many are just due to the upgrade, but one of the main bugbears is keyboard shortcuts. I have always set the F12 key so that it opens a terminal window. I did this through the settings > Keyboard Shortcuts interface, but although I can (apparently) set this in Unity, it doesn't work. The setting is there, listed, but pressing F12 doesn't open a terminal. Neither does it if I set it to any other key.
I can create a new entry, to start xterm with F12, which works fine but this isn't quite the same as a terminal (it appears different on screen.) I also discover that CTRL+ALT+T doesn't open a terminal window either (as is suggested in a very useful list here: [URL] Have I missed something? Or am I being thick? (Quite possible ... )

I want to install Ubuntu ,but when I go to the next window after the keyboard section, I cannot find the right combination for the partition designation. I click install on a 50gb partition I made for the install. The page asks for mount points and says no root file system is defined. I put in EXT2 and a / , page told me I should have a section for a swap file. what is the correct information for these boxes? I am installing Ubuntu to learn the linux sys and I certainly don't know inough about it to come up with these commands yet.

May 6, 2011I upgraded to 11.04 today and wanted to reconfigure so that I could have the desktop cube again. Once I started trying to switch my settings for the cube configuration compiz asked whether I wanted to turn off various features and apparently among them was the control bar on the side and top of the screen. Now I log in to Ubuntu and I get my workspace and that's it. No control bars, just the workspace. I need to know a few things:
1) Has anyone else had this problem?
2) How do I get into the terminal from keyboard commands?
3) What terminal commands do I need to bring back at least the main toolbar so I can access programs.
Ubuntu :: Switch Monitors With Terminal Or Keyboard?
Oct 6, 2010My laptop screen broke (smashed) a while ago and I have been using Windows with an external monitor on it ever since. My main laptop, however, runs Ubuntu 10.04 which I prefer immensely so I installed it on my broken laptop in dual-boot with Windows. Everything was fine at first, it loaded by default into a dual-monitor mode, but that was easily changed to just the single external display.
The problem was when I installed the graphics card driver (a Nvidia one). It seemed to reset the configuration to just using the laptop's broken built-in monitor. From what I can tell, there is nothing wrong with the driver as the OS seems to be running fine (from the small corner of the screen which still works). Unfortunately, neither the FN-F4 key combination (which never worked on Windows either) nor unplugging/reinserting the HDMI cable resets the screen setting to let me use the attached monitor.
So my question is whether there is anything I can do using the full-screen terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1), or a keyboard shortcut, to change monitor or go to dual-monitor mode. I would prefer not to use it to just disable the graphics driver because the laptop is a Samsung r780 and the only reason I really want to use it is its great graphics card which is way better for editing stuff and 3d tasks than the old replacement I'm using at the moment.

Does anyone know them or know any other keyboard-based options for using the terminal in AWN? I can open a new tab by ctrl+shift+t but ctrl+shift+w doesn't work and i've never known how to switch between tabs

Mar 26, 2010I am working on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 9.10 installed and (thus far) working quite well. However, when I type in a command into Terminal (I was trying to install Amarok), the terminal asks for my password and the entire keyboard stops working. As in, I can hit any numerical or letter key, and nothing happens in the terminal but the blinking cursor. The specific command was "sudo apt-get install amarok", and then it asks for my password, and I'm not able to make an entry.
I've tried changing to a couple of the different Dell laptop keyboards in System>Preferences, but again, before typing the command into the terminal, everything is working fine (inside AND outside of the terminal). After the password prompt comes up and the keyboard stops working in terminal, all the character keys still work fine still outside of the terminal.

Sep 24, 2010After a while away from Linux, I recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 on my home PC. Here is the problem: The terminal STINKS in general. Unfortunately, it appears that nothing has changed in the last 3 years in this particular area. I remember now that the terminal (keyboard mappings, colors) was one of the reasons I went with Fedora for my home PC a few years ago.
Short question: WHY is Ubuntu's so different, and why hasn't it been improved? I have a standard 104-key keyboard, yet when I try to edit with VI, the arrow keys don't map properly. You'd think that user feedback alone would have fixed this over 3 years time. Anyhow, how do I fix it?
The white background, minimal color terminal isn't very good. But I really need help getting the various keys (delete, home, end, arrow keys) to map properly. I went with Ubuntu because it seemed to be more ready "out of the box" and I don't need cutting edge like Fedora offers. I wanted more stability, etc.
