I have downloaded a command line version of Ubuntu so I can install everything I want almost from scratch. Problem is, when I install an x display manager it wont let me login. It just flashes for a second with a cross, then returns back to the login screen...stuck in a loop."sudo startx" works but not "startx". I have tried lxdm and xdm.
View 1 RepliesI have reloaded windows xp and now after installing ubuntu latest version, I get a boot menu that gives options. if I select the Ubuntu option, within a few seconds(2)the monitor shows "out of range"! However it is possible to get a command prompt from this menu,(Grub)by pressing "C" then Tab, which lists about 30 commands! But I cannot find what command will overide the ubuntu boot display setting! yet if it is possible in the disc boot F6 menu, then it follows that it must be possible in the hard disk boot menu? (ie nomodeset available on the disk F6, so using F6-nomodeset on the disk allows me to install or run from the disk, which then runs perfectly) Only I cannot make changes in the Ubuntu live that runs direct from the disk, to the installation on the hard drive. My Monitors Max is 75hz 1280x1024, LCD. And although not the latest model, Its still relatively current. Windows from the boot menu works fine.

I cannot find network manager from my panel, how can I get back online now? I am online using a different system on my computer as I speak via Windows.
I installed 6.04 LTS on my machine and the upgraded to 8.04 LTS, and then 10.04 LTS. I was playing around with appearance settings and chose the highest level of window animation but this seemed to cause some sort of problem with gnome (the top bar of windows disappeared including minimize, maximize and close buttons). So I used command line to reinstall gnome (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) and this fixed the problem, but because i didnt realize what i had done to cause it i tried to do the animation settings again, which messed it up and became unfixable by using the above command, so i installed the kde desktop environment using command line and chose to use kdm as the default display manager because i thought i might have to uninstall gnome and didnt want to lose all display managers. Later on i had another idea of how to fix my gnome problem, i chose the highest level of animation again in the appearance settings but when it asked if i wanted to keep these settings or use previous settings i chose previous which reverted back to the lowest level and the window bar came back!
Because i got this fixed i didnt want to use the kdm display manager anymore, so i modified the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file from /usr/bin/kdm to /usr/bin/gdm, at the time i didnt realize it was supposed to be sbin! so i restarted the computer and now it cant find the file for kdm or gdm because gdm is in sbin and kdm is in bin but its looking for gdm in bin. So i have been trying to use recovery boot up to edit the file, which is where my problem is: whenever i try to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm, it displays that i do not have write permissions and that it is a read only file. I have used sudo with every command, and tried nano and vi text editors.Long story short I need to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm but it will not let me due to "write permissions" even when im using root and sudo;

Ok, I've tried Unity for awhile now and I can say it lacks a couple of critical things for me. First is launchers, second is a task bar. While casually browsing the web is ok, more serious work involving several windows has become a pain.

Now, I've read in a few places that I just need to choose "Ubuntu-classic" whenever I boot my machine. This is fine, but for the fact that I don't have any options on my login screen... Just the login and the accessibility & power buttons at the bottom right.
How can I log in using the old gnome display manager?
I have recently upgraded from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD2600 RV630, which with my HP L2045W monitor displayed perfectly at upto 1600x1200 in Fedora 12. Now in Fedora 14, the best I can get (the only resolution) is 800x600. Can anyone tell me how I get the resolution set to something reasonable (I would accept 1024x768, but would prefer getting the full 1600x1200. My current xorg.conf looks like the attached file.

I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.

I use the bios to dual boot between two disks, (1) this op sys and (2)win98se - where I have a driver that fully supports the nvidia.
The disadvantage to my current situation is that there are some programs - eg Evolution - that assume I can see more than you see with this setup - eg the buttons at the bottom of the screen do not appear and i have to do a trial and error tabbing to get what i want. I just downloaded openoffice and i see that it wants 1000x2000 or so. Thus I wont even try to install it unless i can resolve the adapter thing.
I'm very happy with this fedora - use it for software development. But as I become more fond of it, I would like to use it instead of windows - which I can't unless i can see the whole screen
At one point - in response to a suggestion that I download security updates - I did so and got 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686. It was incompatible with my config - put up a screen that looked like a tv test pattern and went into a loop. So I went back to 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.
Using: Ubuntu Lucid The Update Manager has placed me with an odd dilemma, it says that: "adobeair (version 2.5.1.17730) will be upgraded to version 1:2.0.4.13090-1lucid1"
So 'updating' version 2.5 with version 1.2 I think this has happened because Adobe Air updates itself (asking permission first of course) using it's own dialog box from time to time when I run BBC iPlayer Desktop. What should I do, update or not?
I have a VM with Windows XP that is driving me crazy. Everything works great except the display windows (and networking, but that is a different story) I am open VirtManager and go to display the OS and the images will get distorted. I will open IE and scroll down a webpage and some of the text will remain still and others will move, leave an image of garbage. This makes it very aggravating to use. To clear the page I can shake the window (using the cursor not my hands) or move from one tab to another till it clears.. then if I scroll again I have to deal with it all over again.

trying to set up a very minimal X on my 10.04 64 bit version of Ubuntu running nothing but Open SSH and acting as a firewall/router, making a PPP connection. The reason, is that I want to set up KVM/Qemu and run a virtual machine. The virtual machine will have a graphical environment and will be connected to my TV so that I can watch movies, stream TV etc. using it. So far, I have done the following:

When I try to run miwm the error message is:
(null): can't open display.
I have no DISPLAY variable set, but even when I set one myself using export DISPLAY=:0.0 it makes no difference.

I would like to Install Linux on my Desktop & Netbook Computer.Problem is, how to go about it.On the Desktop, I'm not the only person using it, and while I'm all & ready to try Ubuntu (Specially since XP Broke 3 days ago and the Format is impending) The rest of the people using the PC aren't. On the Netbook, right now I can't since I'm working on something, and I'm worried about compatibility issues between Platforms.So I did some research on how to get both Platforms up and running, and I found Wubi. Seemed like a perfect way to start!However, I downloaded the client, and when Downloading the rest of the Installation software, It just took way too long!On ETA it marked 4 hours at first (sure enough, it took little more than that) but then it gave me a new ETA of 8 HOURS!
Is there any other way to download it? Other than the 1.6 Mb Client file? & For the Desktop. Since I'm formating the HD anyway, What steps should I follow to install both OS on it?
