Ubuntu :: Find Which Display Manager Is Currently Being Used?
Mar 9, 2011
How to find which display manager is currently being used? I don't mean desktop environment (KDE, Gnome...) but X11 display manager, like kdm, gdm, ldm, xdm, etc.[URL]How to switch from one to the other.I am writing some documentation related to this (because of a problem I recently had) and I'd like more information
I have downloaded a command line version of Ubuntu so I can install everything I want almost from scratch. Problem is, when I install an x display manager it wont let me login. It just flashes for a second with a cross, then returns back to the login screen...stuck in a loop."sudo startx" works but not "startx". I have tried lxdm and xdm.
I installed 6.04 LTS on my machine and the upgraded to 8.04 LTS, and then 10.04 LTS. I was playing around with appearance settings and chose the highest level of window animation but this seemed to cause some sort of problem with gnome (the top bar of windows disappeared including minimize, maximize and close buttons). So I used command line to reinstall gnome (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) and this fixed the problem, but because i didnt realize what i had done to cause it i tried to do the animation settings again, which messed it up and became unfixable by using the above command, so i installed the kde desktop environment using command line and chose to use kdm as the default display manager because i thought i might have to uninstall gnome and didnt want to lose all display managers. Later on i had another idea of how to fix my gnome problem, i chose the highest level of animation again in the appearance settings but when it asked if i wanted to keep these settings or use previous settings i chose previous which reverted back to the lowest level and the window bar came back!
Because i got this fixed i didnt want to use the kdm display manager anymore, so i modified the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file from /usr/bin/kdm to /usr/bin/gdm, at the time i didnt realize it was supposed to be sbin! so i restarted the computer and now it cant find the file for kdm or gdm because gdm is in sbin and kdm is in bin but its looking for gdm in bin. So i have been trying to use recovery boot up to edit the file, which is where my problem is: whenever i try to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm, it displays that i do not have write permissions and that it is a read only file. I have used sudo with every command, and tried nano and vi text editors.Long story short I need to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm but it will not let me due to "write permissions" even when im using root and sudo;
In Windows Explorer detailed view I can select columns to display artist title, track number, etc for MP3 files. Is this functionality available under Krusader, Nautilus, Dolphin, etc? If so please help.
I downloaded a kde-multimedia package that was supposed to make this work in Konqueror but no luck.
Ok, I've tried Unity for awhile now and I can say it lacks a couple of critical things for me. First is launchers, second is a task bar. While casually browsing the web is ok, more serious work involving several windows has become a pain.
I have a dual screen with four virtual desktops. I'm tired of searching for my windows.
Now, I've read in a few places that I just need to choose "Ubuntu-classic" whenever I boot my machine. This is fine, but for the fact that I don't have any options on my login screen... Just the login and the accessibility & power buttons at the bottom right.
How can I log in using the old gnome display manager?
I am having issues with 3d I am trying to start up a game called auteria but it displays this error "Could not find a compatible opengl display resolution. Please check your driver configuration. (Error: Couldn't find a matching GLX visual)" I am on ubuntu 10.10 could anybody give me a solution on how to fix this issue?
Just wondering is there a way to make the update manager display automatically in Ubuntu 10.10 after it check the repositories for updates. I keep having to manually put sudo apt-get upgrade all the time. Even set to daily it never pops up.
I just installed 9.10, and the "File Manager" seems to not be working. I cant get ubuntu to display a background picture on the desktop, and anything I put on the desktop is not selectable. If I try to access anything under the "Places" tab, it tries to open a window, which read "opening whatever" but nothing happens. I can access files via terminal just fine.
This little program is great for Windows users with multiple displays:[URl]...Anybody know of a similar program or some way to tweak some settings to get the same effect in Linux?
I have a VM with Windows XP that is driving me crazy. Everything works great except the display windows (and networking, but that is a different story) I am open VirtManager and go to display the OS and the images will get distorted. I will open IE and scroll down a webpage and some of the text will remain still and others will move, leave an image of garbage. This makes it very aggravating to use. To clear the page I can shake the window (using the cursor not my hands) or move from one tab to another till it clears.. then if I scroll again I have to deal with it all over again.
I've been using kde environment in fedora 11 but I get the login screen gdm instead of kdm. Is there any way to change the display (login) manager from gdm to kdm.
i wanted to do a little experiment here by changing the default display manger to something like Firefox or GIMP or another program..Since "Display Manager is a program"

gnome.org: GDM is the GNOME Display Manager, a graphical login program. i should be able to replace it by with any other program
trying to set up a very minimal X on my 10.04 64 bit version of Ubuntu running nothing but Open SSH and acting as a firewall/router, making a PPP connection. The reason, is that I want to set up KVM/Qemu and run a virtual machine. The virtual machine will have a graphical environment and will be connected to my TV so that I can watch movies, stream TV etc. using it. So far, I have done the following:
I've successfully installed Debian testing (squeeze) on my old iMac G3. I didn't select a desktop environment as a preconfigured package, but only left "standard system utilities" checked.Once I rebooted, I logged in as root (on the command line) and ran "apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies gnome-icon-theme xdm", let all that pull in and installd then rebooted. As the system was booting, I could see all the services starting and whatnot, but when it gets to the line "Starting xdm..." the screen changes to black, but stays black for a good 2 minutes. I tried hitting some keys on the keyboard, as well as typingy login credentials, even though I can't see them, but nothing seems to work. I've tried rebooting several times
Ive recently installed OpenSuse 11.2 and chose to install gnome with KDE4. Having done so i'm using kdm4 as the display mgr defined in /etc/sysconfig/display manager. However kdm4 reveals all the user names which I don't really like. Ive tried others including console. After logging in manually ive typed startx gnome which fails. How do you continue to use kdm4 setting and omit the display of the user accounts
Well after messing with compiz Opacity I managed to make all panels and windows transparent. Only thing I see is desktop background and icons. Tried ctrl+although+f1 and running gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz Then a reboot. Same issue. Next ran metacity --replace I get: Windows manager error: Unable to open X display
The full screen console is brought up by ctrl+alt+F1. How do you get back to the windows display manager? Is it necessary to reboot?I am running Ubuntu 9.10 with Gnome.
Despite having the Gnome Power Manager set to put the display to seep after 30 minutes, it always happens after 5 minutes. The display will go blank but still lit, and then it powers off after the 30 minutes. Surely, if I set it to 30 minutes, the display should power off then, and not just blank after 5? I have no screensaver packages installed so it's nothing to do with that.
I've desperately been trying to find a download manager for premium rapidshare download and Downloader For X seems to be the most popular solution around. I've tried DTA and Flashgot, they do the trick but not exactly a Flashget (Windows) equivalent. In Downloader For X, I can't get to download anything because of the additional slashes and numbers and stuff. For example, the URL [URL] becomes [URL]I checked the forums and it seems I'm not alone. There is even a working solution [URL]but the date is quite old (I'm using Lucid) and I couldn't find the main/addr.cc file .
Its just as the name says, i cant find the network manager applet o.o. What happened was it was automatically there when i first got Ubuntu, but after it downloaded the necessary updates on the update manager, i rebooted and it twas gone. Cant find it again :_, any1 know how to activate it or find it again.
How do I run Network Manager? I'm new to Ubuntu and have installed 10.04 and am trying to get a USB Dodo mobile wireless broadband to work. I can see Network Manager in SystemPreferencesStartup Application but cant add it to the Panel. I've even removed it and installed it via the Ubuntu software Centre but still cant run it.
Using Jaunty and trying to install a 56k modem driver with gdebi but when I go to install it tells me I have to close all other application managers. I cannot find any other application managers running in system monitor. Synaptic and update manager are both off at this point.
I'm in a dual boot with xp. Something tells me I should have bought that USR modem with the native Linux driver rather than the cheaper Aopen unit
I will be upgrading to Lucid in the coming weeks but would like to resolve this beforehand if possible.
When I installed F11 it didn't have the i810 driver so it defaulted to VESA. I upgraded to F12 using preupgrade and thought it would re-detect the graphical hardware and didn't. I want to recreate xorg.conf for my computer (Toshiba Satellite A45-S25) so I can use Compiz and some 3D application but I can't find system-config-display. It's missing from the system and I don't know what package it belongs to so I can't re-install it.
I can't change my screen resolution but my fedora doesn't have system-config-display. Trying to install this package and for some reason it is not listed under the add/remove software, and yum says it can't find it either.
# yum install -y system-config-display results No package system-config-display available. Error: Nothing to do
Searching in the add/remove software I found some others such as system-config-firewall, system-config-date and etc but it doesn't have system-config-display. Is there any other way to install this package? currently running kernal linux 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64 , fedora 14 on 64 bit system gnome 2.32.0
