General :: Find And Display The Kernel Version Booted Into, With The KDE 4.3.5 Desktop?
Mar 22, 2010
With Mandriva 2010 and KDE 4.3.5 it updated to kernel; 2.6.31.12-1mnb and I want to find out if it boots to this new kernel, or the previous one. In the Ubuntu gnome desktop I do know how to find that easy, so what tool or terminal command will display the current running kernel version ?

I'm currently trying to get my wireless card to work with ndiswrapper after installing backtrack4 today, BUT.When I try and use the make command it tells me that some or another file is missing. I've checked and the output is right, There is no file of that name but there is neither a folder of that name.
Code:
root@bt:/usr/src/ndiswrapper-1.56/ndiswrapper-1.56# make
make -C driver
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/ndiswrapper-1.56/ndiswrapper-1.56/driver'

I have installed OpenSUSE 11.3 64 bit and want to install VMWare workstation 7.1. I have run the install script for VMWare without any issues. When I start the VMWare Workstation I get a window saying this: Before you can run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 2.6.34-12-desktop Kernel headers for version 2.6.34-12-desktop were not found.

I have ubuntu 8.10 on Dell laptop. I wanted to install samba on it. It asked me about installing a lib. I said yes. and then it wanted to "remove" some packages. I agreed by mistake! and stopped it in the middle of removing. Now when ubuntu boots up, it boots normally: no graphic desktop!!. By crtl+alt+f2 and F7 it switches between graphic and normal. But the desktop does not have anything. Once it boots, it says:kinit: resume from old one /var/.../uuid/. how to know what exactly is deleted? And how to repair it? I tried "sudo apt-get -f install" but it errors that dependencies aren't met

On a new install of Fedora 12, I did the online update (using PackageKit). However, though the new kernel with images are seen in /etc/boot it still boots into the old kernel:
New-2.6.31.9-174.fc12
Old-2.6.31.5-174.fc12
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux LinuxFedora.HomePC 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Sat Nov 7 21:25:57 EST 2009 i686

I just installed kernel version 2.6.26-rc2.5.1, but "uname -r" is still giving me 2.6.36-rc2-5-default. Am I booting with the new kernel? How can I tell? If not, how do I create a new boot option?

is there a Debian way possibility to start services depending on the choice made on the (grub) boot prompt? As an example:
Workstation - starts all and everything but no hostap nor xend (run this at home)
Workstation traveller - starts like Worksation except networking (run this in the pub
Xen host - run this preparing some training courses
Xen host HOSTAP - run this having the training course with a WiFi net for the class
I came from Gentoo recently and there is such a possibility. It is relatively simple to put a kernel option which the kernel does not recognize at the boot prompt. Such not recognized options will be sent through to init (and thus to the SysV init scripts) by the kernel and I could script this. What I am looking for is a the "official" way on Debian to do such things.

I just rebooted from an yum update, which updated my kernel 2.6.31-something to kernel 2.6.32-whatever-is-up-to-date-in-testing. My disk layout was LVM2+encrypted root. When I rebooted it prompted me for the encryption password as always. After I entered the correct password the loading screen (progress bar) finishes up as usual. Then, the screen is black.
It just stays in console resolution, but its just black. No typing, no chars, no X-mode, no errors, no VT-switches, nothing... just black. I remember to have started at 2.6.27-something and never had to kernel-update problems, so I dont know why it's annoying me now with todays update. I cant work with the machine any more.

I'm trying to solve a kernel bug discussed in /show_bug.cgi?id=24002. One clue is that the problem does not occur when the kernel used by the installer for 11.4 is booted. Can any one tell me how to strip down the vanilla kernel to produce the installer kernel? Perhaps if I can strip down the vanilla kernel one step at a time then I can find the bug.

I am new to Ubuntu, I installed the latest version and when I turn it on I get like a distortion of the screen, I would gladly post a picture of it but I have no where to post it here. I am running Amd Opteron 175 with DFI Expert and GeForce 7800GT I made a partition on my Vista. I uploaded the pictures as you can see it has the distorted window in background and it just sits there saying 128%.

I am running fedora Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 - works fine, but it puts my display adapter in old fashoned simple vga mode.
DISTRIBTION
Fedora 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686
Mysql 5.1.47
Apache 2.2.15
CONFIGURATION
1.25 ghz AMD athlon
NVIDIA RIVA TNT display adapter
ECS K7S5a board / chipset
AMD BIOS 07.00T
512 mb main mem
128 kb primary cache
256 2ndary cache
66 mhz bus clock
I use the bios to dual boot between two disks, (1) this op sys and (2)win98se - where I have a driver that fully supports the nvidia.
The disadvantage to my current situation is that there are some programs - eg Evolution - that assume I can see more than you see with this setup - eg the buttons at the bottom of the screen do not appear and i have to do a trial and error tabbing to get what i want. I just downloaded openoffice and i see that it wants 1000x2000 or so. Thus I wont even try to install it unless i can resolve the adapter thing.
I'm very happy with this fedora - use it for software development. But as I become more fond of it, I would like to use it instead of windows - which I can't unless i can see the whole screen
At one point - in response to a suggestion that I download security updates - I did so and got 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686. It was incompatible with my config - put up a screen that looked like a tv test pattern and went into a loop. So I went back to 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.

I have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.
