My wireless works without issue with network manager. However I notice that it seems to be a gui only app. That is, when I stop the display manager my laptop loses internet connectivity. The NetworkManager service is still running. Is there a commandline method of using the NetworkManager settings to start the wireless connetion?
View 14 RepliesI installed the base of Debian (only CD 1) without the desktop environment, so it is console only; also I am dual booting with Windows 7 x64 on this Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... I have also successfully mounted my usb flash drive and CD drive; the one thing I am finding rather hectic is finding a way to connect to my wireless network with a "WPA2 Personal" Security and "TKIP/AES" Encryption with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card... I doubt that the drivers are actually installed, and Idk how to install them.Google searches on this yield confusing results, so I need help. So far, the most useful help I have found is the link posted here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 29916.aspx but I have no idea on how to install that, if it is even what I need.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to install virt-manager , to run a couple of virtual machines, i created a virtual nic vnet0 and bridged it to my eth0, i have configured the /etc/network/interfaces file with proper static ip, but i beleive the network manager is renaming my nic to eth1 and causing all kinds of problems. I uninstalled network manager and now i can ping anywhere in the network, but not outside it. ie google.com

I cannot find network manager from my panel, how can I get back online now? I am online using a different system on my computer as I speak via Windows.
I added a repo from launchpad to install latest Network Manager and then installed it (version 0.8). Then I decided to rollback to Karmic's version (since 0.8 doesn't work) but failed: I removed the repo from sources.list
Then apt-get udpate
Then apt-get clean
Then apt-get install network-manager...
But still 0.8 version is downloaded and installed! How can I restore Karmic's version?
This is only for Lucid and Maverick, as there's no 0.8.1 builds for other releases in this ppa. Why?
Because today there seems to be a fuss about 3g usb-modems. And as of network-manager version 0.8.1, there is added support for those and some more.

Lucid ships with an earlier version and there's a ppa for daily builds (that could break, so use it on need-only-basis).

I use the modem Huawei E1820 (uses option1 driver) and for me, this update...
- gives you the ability to choose the desired network; 3G only, 3G pref., EDGE etc.
- Then it shows the signal strength and the technology used atm.; HSPA, UMTS etc.
And the main reason I installed it, bluetooth DUN support. So far it has been working great with Lucid on 32bit architecture, and I don't have to disconnect the modem between boots, or after suspend/resume.
When I start an upgrade or dist-upgrade from single-user mode, and walk away for a long time, I will have found that some packages insist on prompting for answers to questions midway through. That requires me to physically check the console periodically, and that becomes less practical for long upgrades.Is there a way for me to somehow remote into that console and answer any prompts that would popup? By "way" I mean not involving KVM switches or other hardware other than the LAN setup I have now (i.e., I am able to ssh into the machine being updated from another machine, but not when the machine is in single-user mode).
BTW, the reason I am using single-user mode is that, in the past, I have had problems with upgrading packages like GNOME when I am logged into the GNOME Desktop.
I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.

In Googling around it appears that the Network Manager used to have a nice simple (obvious, logical, straightforward, intuitive, easy-to-use... ... can you tell I'm a bit surprised that there's not a simple button to do this, it's pretty common functionality ) option in the IPv4 tab called "Shared to other computers" allowing you to share your network connection with any computers connected to yours... kind of like this:

Professor Google seems to indicate that this may have existed in Debian at one point but, I don't see this option anymore. How do I get it back (or is there another gui way to do this without editing the /etc/network/interfaces file... if there's no other way to do this... that's fine but I'd prefer an easy method of enabling and disabling sharing)?
What I'm trying to do... I have a Beaglebone Black connected via IP over USB. When I'm ssh'ed into the BeagleBone, I want to be able to use aptitude install to grab new packages etc... and that kind of requires access to the outside world. Everything I've found so far seems to to require a modification to the interfaces file but since (according to the interfaces man page) the preferred method is to use the network manager if possible... I'm trying to avoid that.
* It should be noted that I'm running sid with the experimental 4.3 kernel so... maybe in doing so I've shot myself in the foot?
I had trouble connecting to a wireless network with openSUSE, so I tried the YAST network manager to see if that fixed it. Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.

I then added myself to the group netdev and rebooted but it is still not running. What's more, when installing network-manager, aptitude has also installed resolvconf which screwed up my /etc/resolv.conf. It decided to make a symlink of resolv.conf to '/etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf' which doesn't exist and 'run' is itself a symlink to '/lib/init/rw/resolvconf' which doesn't exist! Talk about simplicity. So I just manually created and altered a new resolv.conf.If anyone knows what is going on with network manager then any help would be much appreciated.One last thing: I read that I need to comment out any configuration of eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces in order for network-manager to manage said interface. I previously had eth0 setup with a static IP. I trust network-manager will allow me to do this once it starts behaving?
I have stop using debian some months but I decide to come back. Yesterday I have make a clean install of debian squeeze. The network manager never rember my wireles password. Every time I open the pc it ask me the keyring password and the wireles password. Why network manager can't rember my passwords? Also I have a strange problem when I try to gain root acces. If I try to open synaptic or to mount a ntfs partion it ask me the root password but every time I type my root pass it says that its incorrect but I am absolutely sure that I type my root pass correct. Also if I try to gain root acces from terminal with su its became the same thing but after some tries it takes my pass as corect. So every time I type my root pass from a gui like gksu it always says that is incorect but if I type my pass in terminal it take it correct after some tries. In the past I have again installed the debian from the same cd on the same pc but I had never those problems. What can be wrong?

Okay, so today I decided I was bored with my current Fedora 15 installation and tried a little distro hopping. Eventually I ended up at Debian Squeeze. I downloaded the cd version as a net install won't work because of driver issues. I used the graphical interface to install it.When it finished installing I booted it up, made sure everything was working. Now in all my past I think 6 linux installations, all I had to do to get the internet working was move a file someone gave me a while to my /lib/firmware. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but no matter what, where ever I go, I can't find an actual manager to connect to the internet. This might be a stupid question to a lot of people, but I'm stumped. There is nothing in the menu's.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSince a recent update on Stretch, I have been unable to use the network-manager to connect to my home wireless network on my laptop. It was working fine before. I did not change any settings on the WLAN router. I can still connect to other wireless networks at work and university, just not this particular one at home. All other non-Debian devices in my household are still able to connect just fine.While figuring this out, I have tried connecting manualy with ifup but I don't really know how that works. Right now there is only the loopback entry in /etc/network/interfaces.

I just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.

After fossicking around I can not find anything around that I can invoke in a terminal to configure settings in network-manager. The applet(?) on the task bar doesn't ask for a login, so options are grey/grayed out. The "program" in the applications menu is similarly grey/grayed out.
If it was a once off, then I suspect that it would be simple as login as root to start X, but I have a series of config files to edited each time of their initial use. also, there is the ongoing problem of vpn target switching.

After today's squeeze update the nm-applet (it updated it to version 0.8.4-1) crashes when trying to connect to my vpn (pptp). I'm pretty new when it comes to this so I'm not sure what to do. I tried looking at the log file (applications--> system tools-->log file viewer) but I don't know what to make of it.

I just installed, and evolution doesn't seem to think it has internet. The icon with the power cord in the bottom left is unplugged, and send/receive is greyed out. Internet is working , but it is not using network manager, since network manager says no internet is connected. Maybe this has something to do with it?

This works fine if I from the client, start OpenVPN from the terminal. /etc/init.d/openvpn start
It then asks for a password for the certificate, which is should.
I have then installed the OpenVPN option for the Gnome network manager (network-manager-openvpn), so I could use the nm-applet for this, instead.
But it seems to be that there is a little bug, so I does not prompt me for the certificate password, OR use the password this is actually set for the certificate. (kinda irritating)
I get the following error on on the client.
nm-openvpn[2936]: ERROR: could not read Private Key username/password/ok/string from management interface
It seems like an very old bug, I tried the following without any luck (Yes I noticed it was for Ubuntu). [url]

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use network-manager-gnome to connect to my wireless networks, but I can only use it with a graphical environment, and it doesn't even work that well since it will drop the connection after a few minutes and I have to reconnect it manually, that means I cannot leave my computer downloading a big file all night since it will only download for a few minutes, does anyone know what package can I use to connect to my wireless without the need of network-manager, even if it's through command line?
