Ubuntu :: Login Using The Old Gnome Display Manager?
Jul 30, 2011Ok, I've tried Unity for awhile now and I can say it lacks a couple of critical things for me. First is launchers, second is a task bar. While casually browsing the web is ok, more serious work involving several windows has become a pain.
I have a dual screen with four virtual desktops. I'm tired of searching for my windows.
Now, I've read in a few places that I just need to choose "Ubuntu-classic" whenever I boot my machine. This is fine, but for the fact that I don't have any options on my login screen... Just the login and the accessibility & power buttons at the bottom right.
How can I log in using the old gnome display manager?
Debian Configuration :: Gnome Power Manager Display Setting Not Respected?
May 19, 2011Despite having the Gnome Power Manager set to put the display to seep after 30 minutes, it always happens after 5 minutes. The display will go blank but still lit, and then it powers off after the 30 minutes. Surely, if I set it to 30 minutes, the display should power off then, and not just blank after 5? I have no screensaver packages installed so it's nothing to do with that.

Sep 4, 2009I have a VM with Windows XP that is driving me crazy. Everything works great except the display windows (and networking, but that is a different story) I am open VirtManager and go to display the OS and the images will get distorted. I will open IE and scroll down a webpage and some of the text will remain still and others will move, leave an image of garbage. This makes it very aggravating to use. To clear the page I can shake the window (using the cursor not my hands) or move from one tab to another till it clears.. then if I scroll again I have to deal with it all over again.

Apr 16, 2011I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?

Jun 7, 2011I had a computer running a NVIDA Quadro NVS 450 with 4 screens on Fedora 14 and it worked fine. I make a new install with Fedora 15 and I am now not able any more running more as one screen with Fedora 15. I am running now on run level 3 and when I configure the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf for one screen, Gnome starts correctly. When I change to two screens, and runs "startx", Gnome 3 starts and displays only the background picture without any manager. The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows no errors.

Now I can't log in to the gnome window manager, it logs in and then logs out again. I would like to remove the entry that I created in the startup programs, but I don't know which file to edit. Jun 9, 2010I have upgraded my Laptop from Fedora12 to Fedora 13 via DVD image (x64 version). After the upgrade, I tried to update via YUM every package that still needed upgrade (especially nvidia drivers), and I got

So, I tried to delete and reimport the rpmfusion repos, but when I go to this page:

and try to install the RPMs, it only allows me to open them with Archive Manager!
So I looked into GNOME menus and... damn, apparently I can't find Package manager anymore!
Where did it go? and more importantly, why can't I install RPMs anymore? Can anyone enlight me on what went wrong?
Being the fool that I am, I forgot the good old terminal. I have still to nail down in my brain that going by terminal always works better than GUI. Using RPM -Uvh I managed to re-import all repos whose GPG key wasn't signed, and so I finally can upgrade my packages.
Package Manager is missing from GNOME. I have a couple of packages that I installed outside from repositories (they are SongBird and PersonalBrain), and I want to upgrade one (SongBird) and delete the other (PersonalBrain) but since I am in no way an expert when it comes to use the Terminal, I don't know how to uninstall them both (and then reinstall an upgraded version of SongBird).

Nov 11, 2009I'm running 10/11 on a toshiba satellite. i kinda got tired of loosing stuff because i mis-timed the battery discharge, so some months ago i pulled the battery and just ran on the adapter (back ground, i don't know if it's nothing, related to, or caused the problem).
monday morning fired her up - boom got the power "gnome manager not installed correctly"message. tuesday, googled gnome then power then... you get the route, and found Fedoraforum.org, read the stuff, did the yum remove...., did the yum install.... everthing seemed cool. 2nd reboot she stopped at the "f/infinity/balloon" kinda logo.
i went to verbose startup and - all sorts of services were failing; the word deprecate(d, ing, tion) came up a lot "device full..." came up a fair bit as well. when i tried the "yum remove" approach again i got [rpmdb: write: 0x1fd48b0, 8192: No space left on device]. similarily on "yum install" same kinda stuff - deprecation, BaseExpection, deprecated..... kinda long winded. up till now (13 years)

Jul 22, 2011I recently decided to install xfce-desktop as a fallback alternative whenever Gnome 3 has problems. Now I have the Thunar file manager opening up by default even when logged into Gnome (for example when using Alt-F2 and typing in a folder name, or when plugging in an iPod.) I've searched around for days but can't find any place to set a default file manager. The Default Applications dialogue doesn't include file manager, only web browser, video etc.)

Sep 4, 2009The Gnome Window Manager worked fine with the ProSavage video card under Fedora 10. But after switching to Fedora 11, the Gnome Window Manager's response to graphics requests (such as selecting or moving a window) has been very slow and choppy, when running from the Live CD and from the Hard Drive. The hardware configuration is the following:
-S3 ProSavage video card
-AMD Athlon(tm) XP-M 1700+ 1.46 GHz
-2 GB RAM
After installing Fedora 11 to my Hard Drive, I installed the following packages, hoping that would fix the problem:
xorg-x11-drivers.i586
system-config-display.noarch
After installing the packages and restarting my machine, Fedora 11 detected ProSavage card. The 'savage' driver was loaded during startup (according to dmesg) and the ProSavage card appeared in the Display configuration, when I selected System|Administration|Display. Unfortunately, I didn't detect much improvement. Here's the entry from dmesg: [drm] Initialized savage 2.4.1 20050313 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0
As a comparison, I tried running the Fedora 11 Live CD on a box with an ATI Radeon video card and the Gnome Window Manager was smooth and responsive.

Nov 19, 2009My monitor kept powering down after 20 minutes so I installed Gnome-power-manager by yum so that I could change the settings. After the installation and every time I try to use it I get a message saying:

I'm now unable to effect a change in the power settings and the display keeps turning off.
1) Is someone able to post their config file from a working F12 install? I believe it's /etc/dbus-1/system.d/gnome-power-manager.conf but not certain as I don't have one ;-)
2) ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/%gconf.xml is empty - is it empty for someone with a working install?
3) how I can change the power settings without the gui - I'm googling on this point and will post the answer as and when I find it.

Ubuntu :: No Network-manager Or Nework-manager-gnome
Oct 6, 2009I have been trying to lighten the load that Ubuntu uses on my RAM and processor, and decided to try LXDE, as it is the lightest-weight DE that I have tried and liked. I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

Fedora :: Installed Gnome-power-manager, And After Config It For "never Suspend"
Aug 28, 2010I have a FC11 over AMD Sempron 2400+ 512Mb RAM and Im using it as 24 hours server, but after a few hours of work it makes something like suspend (don't response to network, clock freeze, etc. but screen works) till I touch mouse or keyboard.
I think this is a configuration item, but I'd searching about pm-utils and I found how config suspend and hibernate states, but nothing about what thing order a suspend every few hours.
I'd installed gnome-power-manager, and after config it for "never suspend", only change is, maybe, a bit more time before automatic suspend.
