May 18, 2010

I'm relatively new to ubuntu. I have an IBM X31 type 2672. It was running

However, when I run the pc now it boots straight into xp. I have read the forums about reinstalling grub. However, the first command in the grub shell that locates the HDD doesn't work . Which means the other commands don't work

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading Windows Get GRUB Back?

Jul 6, 2010

I had Vista loaded on my computer, then loaded the BRILLIANT ubuntu onto a second partition! This gave me the GRUB boot loader which is fine.My 2 points are;1. Can I change the position of the items in the GRUB loader so if no keys are pressed it loads Windows automatically?? (Its for my sons computer!!) Also can I edit the GRUB so its less complicated for him??2.I want to update his Windows to Win 7, free upgrade! This over rights the Win partition and will therefore get rid of my GRUB loader. When I have updated how can I get back the ability to chose between booting Win 7 and Ubuntu?? How do I get the GRUB back?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs).

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Update (juli 23rd 2010): Taking A Step Back?

Jul 24, 2010

Having several distros on my computer (including Windows), I prefer BING (BootIt NG) as an overall boot manager. This way, I just install a distro together with GRUB to its dedicated partition, and keep full control over what partitions are available/visible and bootable when family members use the computer.Yesterday, I tried to update Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) and got a problem with the newly available GRUB (1.98-ubuntu7): it said that installing GRUB to a partition was a "BAD" idea, and, luckily, refused to update. I've noticed this behaviour during my last install of Sidux (great distro to keep track of what's happening at the KDE front, by the way). Same problem, same message. Result: no more new Sidux releases...

What's going on? Is this intended behaviour and thus making it impossible for people to manage their booting their own way? Are we talking about a bug here? There seems to be a mentioning of this behaviour on Launchpad, but it's unclear whether it's a bug or not; at least to me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bring Back Gnome-app-install For Lucid?

Apr 30, 2010

I hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time. The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?

Following lines taken from other replies in this post to make it easier to do:

-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.

-Update the repository (including the new PPA):

sudo apt-get update

-Install the gnome application installer:

sudo apt-get install gnome-app-install

-Run the gnome application installer:

gnome-app-install

Ubuntu Installation :: Back To Original Packages After Upgrade/install?

I just did a fresh install from 8.04 to 10.04 with separate "/" and /home partitions. I really wanted a new 10.04 system to start from scratch and rebuild it again & differently. Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?

This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.

Ubuntu :: Lost GUI After Running Grub / Get It Back?

Feb 5, 2011

Login in problems:
I was trying to fix the brightness on my toshiba T130 Satellite laptop and found these instruction [Note: I did not try XRANDR option]
If backlight control doesn't work with the 'XRANDR' option above, use this code...

Safe the file, run 'sudo update-grub' and reboot.

Credits: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...id/+bug/392948
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/toshiba+satellite+t130
However after running these instructions and rebooting my laptop I lost the GUI, and do not know how to get it back.
If it helps the loader screen with the 4 dots has gone slightly skewed, and I've downloaded the most recent update changes.

I can get GUI through recovery mode and running it in failsafex, but I don't think this is a good solution.

Installation :: Manual GRUB Install For Screwed Up Luit Install

Apr 16, 2010

So I am stuck in the bootloader hell. With a vintage PC

Ok, so here's the setup:There is one HDD, with two primary partitions: 1st for the system, 2nd for the swap. I booted Luit Linux Live CD, and ran it's HDD install script. The Luit Linux is based on Damn Small Linux that uses kernel version 2.4.22. For some reason, it's bootloader LILO install did something wrong and the fresh install wouldn't boot

Error 15 By the way, I don't understand why the bootloader texts refer to GRUB, while the install script definitely was installing LILO.

I can now boot again with that same Live CD (or any other CD that would boot to Linux), and once loaded, mount the hard disk and check and update it's contents. I'd like to install there as up-to-date GRUB version what that ancient hardware (48MB RAM) can take, and then configure the GRUB to load that install that's sitting on the hdd.I will be very grateful for any advice. Unfortunately my knowledge of things like GRUB is very poor, so it's difficult to look up advice by searching the internet.

Ubuntu :: Windows Won't Boot / Goes Back To Grub - Resolve This?

Mar 15, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire 5810T which came with Windows Vista. I prefer Ubuntu but I need some windows applications so I dual-booted Vista and 9.10.

There was a few minor problems with the Vista side but I didn't use it enough to care. A few weeks ago Vista would not open some programs and others would shut down automaticly and some would open but not connect to the internet like they should. This happened on my previous laptop and when I used the system recovery discs to restore the computer all those issues were gone.

I used the recover discs to restore everything to its original factory settings, it said everything was successful so I restarted. My computer got to the grub menu but when I chose Windows Vista as my operating system it goes black for half a second then returns to the grub menu.

I can get into Ubuntu fine, and I can see the Vista files when I mount the drive to Ubuntu. When I look at the files everything is the way it should be if I had restored it but I can't boot it..

Ubuntu / Apple :: Grub Error - Boot Back Into Mac Os X?

May 6, 2011

I am persuaded now (too late) that I need to invest in a robust backup scheme.

I had refit dual-booting snow leopard and ubuntu 10.10.

I tried to upgrade to 11.04 and it got stuck on bootup after the upgrade.

So I went into disk utility and deleted what I thought were all partitions except the mac one. I rebooted, and now I get the grub no partition error.

Did I delete my mac partition? I don't think that I did. How do I boot back into mac os x? Using the option key on bootup no longer shows a mac disk and inserting the mac os x system cd doesn't show any options either.
