Nautilis is very good at hiding or showing 'hidden' files and folders (names starting with .) but using any other program to save or open a file, I have to scroll through reams of hidden to my storage folders. Is there a way to make the save and open dialogs 'hide' the 'hidden' files? Is it different for different programs?

I've netsearched for introductions, tutorials, HOWTOs etc. and found very little.
Importantly I'd like to change the default font used on the display, to make the characters larger and bolder; the default is a strain to read.
Less importantly is there any way to make OpenProj use the desktop file open/save dialogs, rather than its own?
Is there a way to get Code::Blocks to auto-hide the dialogs at the bottom? I can't find an option anywhere.
View 1 Replies View Relatedjust a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedActually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.

I have no security issues so I've allowed public access to the shares and I can access them fine from all windows machines. I also need to preserve the dos attributes for files and folders using 'map hidden', 'map system', 'map archive' which works great for files but not for folders. I've got a number of folders from my windows box which I would like to keep hidden (for tidiness more than anything) but when I transfer them to the samba share, they become visible again and I can seem to control their visibility at all from windows or from ubuntu. Do I take it from this that samba can only manage to maintain dos flags on files and not on directories?

Basically, my email folder is in a unix folder on a system, and that system logs me into my folder when I try using evolution. The downside is that files like .bashrc, .bash_profile and other weird stuff end up in the foldertree view

View 4 Replies View Relatedcreating a new website project in the var/www folder. I open jedit and try to save a folder or file inside var/www using jedt and it refuses to let me create or save anythink in the var/www directory.
I have used the terminal to create a new folder and file inside the var/www directory and when i open the file with jedit or gedit and write some code into it it wont save the code either. I am used to just creating a new directory and saving files into it with ease using windows so this is puzzling me a little. I also installed lamp server through the terminal and the phpmyadmin folder installed somewhere different from the var/www file.

Is there really no other way of making a folder or a file hidden in Linux just like in Windows by Applying Attributes? I Don't want to rename it by putting a dot in front of it. Moreover renaming a file by putting a dot in front of the name changes the position the folder appears in the list view. Used gparted to format a brand new iomega prestige 1 tb usb hard drive (ntfs) to ext4. The problem is that I can't create folders from nautilus because I don't have permission (root). There is one folder present already lost + found that appeared after reformatting. i can't access that folder because of permissions. Was any of this supposed to happen after formatting an external drive and how can I fix this? I intend to use grsync to back up important folders but can't create folders from grsync also. The only account on ubuntu is mine and i have access to root privileges.

I can connect to my network shares fine using "Connect to a Server" & bookmark with the file browser, however when I use OpenOffice writer Spreadsheet to open/save files the shares disappear in the"Open/Places". Is this a bug in Ubuntu or Open Office? Is there an update/fix?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest Openoffice.org from Openoffice website on an old 8.04 install. I downloaded the 64 bit .deb version for Ubuntu. All went well. OO3.3 runs well. My question is can you use the Ubuntu Open and Save dialogs? The one where you have drives on the left side. All that comes up with this version is a basic Open or Save dialog. The OO that comes with Ubuntu has these menus. Is there anyway to get these with Openoffice downloaded from the OO website?

Then I click on a directory and I have 2 little white spots circling one another, OO's way of saying "wait". After a while the contents of directory I chose is displayed. Going to the next (sub) directory again takes a long time.Only OO is doing this, when I save from other programs going to the directory where I want to save the stuff takes no time at all. The subdirectories are displayed immediately after I click on the parent directory.

Last time,I changed the icon for the ding-dictionary,it used the gear-wheel symbol before. The I saw,that the hidden directories also used the new icon,and now they are all gone Did install the old 256.53-NVIDIA-driver last night,but that should not be the reason ?
View 4 Replies View Relatedhow I can gain access to folder in Ubuntus 9.10 terminal. when I use a command like ./ Documents or ~/ Documents The terminal only states that "There is a folder named Documents" but never lets me enter. I can create a folder using the mkdir command and I can navigate that folder as long as that terminal session is active. When I close out the terminal and try to reopen it denies acces the same way as mentioined above. Do I need to set some type of access permissions or?
