What need would there be for hidden directories to exist in /?
If someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.
Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.
im trying to extract a skin into the amsn skin directory and it says im not allowed so i went into the users and groups and i set my self up to be able to do all the commands and put myself in the root catagory of users. this is where im lost im still unable to do anything.. i want complete administrator access on my OS i shouldnt have to type in sudo -

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've done a low level format on them so they're completely empty. When I use them with my windows machines, they're absolutely fine. When I plug them into my Ubuntu machine, there is a hidden directory created called 'RECYCLER' which I'm assuming is for deleted files?However, it also creates a .exe file in this directory called 0x2D9FA278 which has an Icon with an H in it and a comment of 'Facebook Photo' This has the effect of making all the directories on the stick into shortcuts! I googled the file name and it seems to be some sort of Trojan, but I don't understand how it's go into my Ubuntu machine, I've scanned with ClamAV and it finds nothing.

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.

It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

They are taking up space, so I would like to delete them, but to go through manually and figure out which ones I need would be very laborious. Is there a way to find, and perhaps delete, config folders for packages that are not installed?

I have no security issues so I've allowed public access to the shares and I can access them fine from all windows machines. I also need to preserve the dos attributes for files and folders using 'map hidden', 'map system', 'map archive' which works great for files but not for folders. I've got a number of folders from my windows box which I would like to keep hidden (for tidiness more than anything) but when I transfer them to the samba share, they become visible again and I can seem to control their visibility at all from windows or from ubuntu. Do I take it from this that samba can only manage to maintain dos flags on files and not on directories?

Basically, my email folder is in a unix folder on a system, and that system logs me into my folder when I try using evolution. The downside is that files like .bashrc, .bash_profile and other weird stuff end up in the foldertree view

I have recently reformatted my external hard disk to ext3, and now whenever I delete something via my file manager, a hidden directory (".Trash-1000") is made. I would like to keep this drive clean, is there any way to stop the directory from being made? I'm getting annoyed having to rm -r it every time I delete something.

If I type "ls" I get the display of all my files and directories.
If I type "ls -l" I get the display of files and directories.
If I type "ls -a" or "ls -la", the terminal hangs.
Any thoughts? I have tried creating myself a new account and moved all my files over, then changed the ownerships to the new account. However, now the new account is acting the same way.

Everything went fine until I got to the part where I need to protect my hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to the outer volume (these instructions: [url] ). I can't find the checkbox to "Protect hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to outer volume". The closest thing I can find is an option to "Protect hidden volume when mounting outer volume". Intuitively these don't sound the same to me. There are 2 difference between my setup and the instructions; 1) the instructions appear to be written for Windows and not Linux. 2) I am using a file volume and not a partition volume.
Does anyone know where the option is to protect the hidden volume when writing to the outer volume?
I post this to have a memo about how I looked into this problem. You can use this command to check what is hidden.

If it doesn't output anything, then nothing is hidden currently. This usually means that a process was started between the ps command and the /proc check of chkrootkit. You can check what those command(s) are by running the above in a loop, with high priority.

I want to move all the contents of something including hidden files up to the site root at: /var/www/html/
What is the proper command for this?

However, if you were to save such a file or directory to a flash drive, it would only be hidden on Linux systems. Anyway to close this or secure it. Right now I'm using the hardware as my main router for my home network. I have Linsys I modded with DD-WRT. I'm thinking of re-configuring my network to use the DD-WRT router as the main router and the 2wire just as a modem. The 2wire is a hybrid modem/router and I'm kind of lazy and don't feel like re-configuring my entire network if I can just close the port.

i'm wondering if it's possible to restore the original image file that you have hidden data in with steghide. The basic Idea is you have a photo using gpg sign it and then embed the signature. then remove the signature at a later time and check it with the signature. I hope another "inverse" algorithm doesn't need to be written to undo the first (if a "inverse algorithm is possible). This assume you already have the pass phrase or that there is no pass phrase. I already know how to retrieve the original file just want to remove the hidden data from the Image and restore it's attributes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.
