Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Doesn't Show Up In GRUB2?

Apr 9, 2011

So, as the title says Windows 7 doesn't show up in GRUB2's selection menu, but it does show my Windows XP professional option that I had before Linux and then reinstalled. After searching very long for the problem in Linux and GRUB2 I decided to boot into XP, witch gave me the option for Windows 7 or older versions of Windows -> so I eventually can boot to it! So here is the real question: How can I make an entry for Windows 7 and for Windows XP? This is because I'd like to use a theme for GRUB and it would be to stupid to make GRUB look nice if I then come to a stupid screen of the Windows loader!

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't Show Vista?

Feb 6, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my second hard drive, and now I can't boot into Vista (installed on hard drive #1). Grub2 just doesn't seem to be recognizing that there is a Windows Vista installation on the first hard drive.

I followed this guide (with Fabien's changes) because it seemed like they were having the exact same problem. But after rebooting, Vista is still not showing in the GRUB menu. In fact, the GRUB menu doesn't even show up unless I press Shift because it thinks that Ubuntu is the only OS installed on my computer.

My results with boot_info_script:

Code:
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks for (UUID=e94a058d-1d19-4a98-924b-1a5fce405bdd)/boot/grub.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb sda1:

[Code]....

When I was installing Ubuntu to HD2 (the 500gb one), I got a peculiar message saying that Windows was installed on it. There wasn't anything on HD2 though, because Windows Vista was most definitely installed on HD1.

However, if I chose to overwrite HD1 with Ubuntu, the message wouldn't come up. It seemed like the installer was confused as to which hard drive actually held my Windows Vista install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Does Not Show Up On Grub2 Bootloader

Jul 19, 2010

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, I've installed it in Virtual Box and through Wubi on other computers but this was the first time that I've done a live install on my production computer. I had problems from the get go, I was using a Live CD of 10.04 (64 bit AMD) to install it and when it got to the part about choosing a partition no drives would show up at all. Eventually after some searching around, I discovered that Using an Alternate install CD would work. I did that, installing Ubuntu into one of the free partitions I had set up prior to this. Eventually my system turned on but the monitor went to sleep so I had to hit E on the grubmenu and change something to nomodeset (or something like that) so that I could see the screen. I installed Compiz and it was all good from there.

Except for One issue, I cannot boot Into windows at all, it doesn't show up on the bootloader even though the partition shows up in Gparted. I've tried updating Grub2 with no results, here are the results of Sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 400.1 GB, 400088457216 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 48641 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB2 Does Not Show Windows-XP In The Menu?

May 18, 2011

GRUB2 does not show Windows-XP Pro in the menu anymore.

Probably already posted before; however each case usually is somehow different. I use Ubuntu only occasionally to learn how it works.

After the latest update using Update Manager, quite a few packages were installed without any problem. However GRUB2 does not show the Windows-XP(Prof) partition in the menu anymore. Now I can't boot Windows because I can't select what is not shown.

1. This what I get with command "sudo fdisk -l" (in the present situation)

georges@PC1:~$ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for georges:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

[Code]....

It is already the second time that GRUB2 changes the menu items as it pleases, messing up the bootmenu. How can I repair the bootmenu in order to be able to boot Windows-XP, as before the updates ?

The current Ubuntu version is now 10.4 LTS The current GRUB version is "GNU GRUB version 1.98 Ubuntu10"

Debian Configuration :: Show Grub2 Menu Only Upon Request?

Mar 23, 2010

Daily updated Debian Testing Because Debian is the only operating system on this laptop and I keep at least two working kernels, I would like to hide Grub2's menu unless I press a key (like one could do with Grub). I can hide the menu if the line GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 is in /etc/default/grub but it doesn't appear after pressing SHIFT, which is a threat if the system cannot boot the selected kernel. Right now, the timeout is set to one second. I've read Grub2's documentation and [URL] and tried various combinations, but I haven't been able to make this work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Hide Grub2 Menu At Startup?

Apr 8, 2011

I have serious problems hiding the Grub menu at startup.

What I want to do is simple boot into the first (and only) item without showing the menu to the user.

I have removed everything on the system so the only option is "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-30-generic" in the menu.

My /etc/default/grub is like this:

Code:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

[Code].....

No matter what I do I always get the same result:

The menu is shown and no countdown!

It's like grub isn't reading the changes of /etc/default/grub

why I'm unable to hide the menu?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Does Not Show Login Screen At Startup?

Feb 4, 2011

I'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.

I'm passing for the following situation:

When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.

However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.

If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Doesn't Show Up At Startup

May 7, 2011

I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Each OS is installed on a separate partition of one hard drive. I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Doesn't Show Panels On Startup?

May 20, 2010

I have a computer with pentium 3 that i'd like to run ubuntu 10.04 on. I've installed it from a livecd (the cd is fine, because i used that cd to install 10.04 on another machine, and its working perfectly). The installation went fine, and on the first boot everything worked fine as well. but when i tried it again, the computer started but at the desktop there were no panels on the top or bottom, although every thing else was working.

I could use Alt+F2 to run any application that comes preinstalled on the ubuntu cd including the terminal, but i can't access Applications, Places, System, etc.

Everytime at startup during boot there is a message that prints "error: no suitable mode found" "error :unknown command 'terminal'" (without the quotes).

this computer has a bit of a history as i once tried to install linux mint on it but failed because of a bad livecd. the grub got installed wrongly, tried to reinstall xp, didn't work, then ultimately after trying a few other things turned to DBAN, which surprisingly also failed crashing everytime i ran it before completing its erase, which leads me to believe that Dban didn't leave my hard drives in too good a condition. when the ubuntu live cd worked however i was ignited with a brand new spark of hope, and even that now is starting to diminish, is there no hope for my pentium 3.

Debian Configuration :: Plymouth Does Not Show Up At Startup

Oct 25, 2010

I've been trying to setup Plymouth on Debian Squeeze, but have only been partially successful: Plymouth works with shutdown (i.e. I see Plymouth after I tell the computer to shut down), but not when I start up my computer (before it reaches GDM). In other words, Plymouth seems to work with my graphics, but for some reason does not show up at startup (not even briefly, as far as I can tell). I've searched the forums and followed this advice, as well as the instructions found here: [URL] but neither of those worked. I'm running Debian Testing (Squeeze) on a Thinkpad X41, which uses "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller" for graphics.
