Ubuntu :: Getting Alternative To The Unity Game Engine?
May 31, 2011Is there any alternative to the Unity Game engine or can I run it On Linux?
View 3 RepliesIs there any alternative to the Unity Game engine or can I run it On Linux?
View 3 RepliesI'll say this first: we want to NOT USE WINE. we don't care how much WINE has advanced, want to avoid reliance on an outside program to run this.
I've been planning a game with someone and we want it to be able to run on linux (Umbuntu base) without wine. It should be able to also run on Windows as well, however.
The game will be a graphical MU* with combat and item systems. We have no budget- it's a shoestring sort of thing.
Here's what has been hashed out so far: Programed in C#, maybe with some .NET graphics will be 2D, however, a 3d effect is wanted for things like ascending and descending (Z axis) Partner wants to use Tom Shane's GUI library (Neoforce Controls) Partner wants to use flatredball as graphics engine I don't care what is used as long as it works without WINE
Here's the problem: Flat red ball uses Direct X and is not openGL compatible (that I'm aware of) and my partner wants the effects from the flat red ball engine. Also, the GUI library he wants is also not openGL compatible.
We need some other opensource or freeware graphics engine that can do things like flat red ball but still work in Linux. GUI packs are also nice. I Tried suggesting but Partner has issues with....Mono - Mono.XNA won't work directly using openGL - thinks it's "too hard" after playing with OpenTK even though I told him they aren't the same Java - too clunky Horde3d - Wouldn't even look at the link
We've only been working on planning stages and aren't too in-depth yet. Also, his former interest in making this run in wine without Linux seems to be dipping right along with a marked increase in wanting to rely on Microsoft.
I am a software developer, presently porting a game engine from Visual Studio to GCC. I'm working on LTS 10.04. The project uses C++ lambdas, and I really would like to keep it this way. Therefore, I need GCC >= 4.5 to compile it.
I wouldn't like to reinstall entire OS, or to have to manually update this single program every time. Is there an option to update it from 10.10 repositories, pointing out, that I need only this package (and it's dependencies)? Or is there any PPA that does the trick for me?
Generally, the entire packaging system of Ubuntu rocks, as long as I can find up-to-date PPAs of all packages I need to have in recent versions (like mono).
I'm having trouble using Blender and XBMC after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10. Whenever I start the Game Engine mode in Blender (by pressing 'P'), Blender crashes. This happens both in the repository version (2.49.2) and with the newest version (2.54 beta).
For some reason, xbmc actually starts without problems now, but earlier the console output was somewhat similar to that of Blender. The output from Blender seems to indicate that there is something wrong with either libc6 or the NVIDIA drivers. The xbmc output (which now works ok) mentioned something about /lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so, if I remember correctly.
The output at crash is as follows:
Blender 2.54:
Code:
./blenderfound bundled python: /pathtoblender2.54/2.54/python
Detected GL_ARB_texture_env_combine
Detected GL_ARB_texture_cube_map
Detected GL_ARB_multitexture
Detected GL_ARB_shader_objects

How do I temporally disable compiz when in unity-3d so that I can play a game at the correct speed (with compiz enabled I get about 20% of the speed I get with compiz disabled) I have tried a script with
metacity --replace &
./game
compiz --replace &
But this makes an unusable desktop.
I know I can use unity-2d but that seems to be worse in terms of usability.. I also know I can use gnome2 but whats the point when that will be missing in the next release . Is there anyway of doing this in unity-3d? Are there any plans (possibly from compiz) to ever do this automatically ?
One thing that worries me is that a new user will try a opengl game and think that Linux is far slower than Windows at games (which if you have a nvidia card with the binary driver is not true)
Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus. It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)
I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.
This game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDo you know any game engines or game studios that can make adventure games, for instance in the style of Myst (1st person) or in the style of old Sierra games (3rd person), like King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.?I've seen AGI Studio, but it is too old, I'd like to use more modern graphics (although there is no need for 3D).

2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?
Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've seen a number of instructions online that say to add either the elementary art ppa or the murrine daily ppa to get the 0.98 murrine engine installed. I did that but it only installs 0.91. I checked synaptic to see if I can force the version to install, but still, no dice. 0.91 is the highest version I can seem to install.
I also tried compiling from source, which appeared to run w/o any issues, but I must be missing something because it appears to not have any affect.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.10 My wife wanted to use a new gtk-theme so she used the option "download more themes" and installed a new gtk-theme. The theme was not vissible for her so she just chose another default one. Now when ever either of us login into our accounts the default internal gtk-theme is used (the ugly grey square one). When we start the themes application (don't know the english name for it, it enables you to choose another theme for your desktop). The previously selected theme is then enabled even before the window of the util is shown.

Yesterday, after installing suggested updates since I last updated a few weeks ago, themes are broken. I am using 10.04 Lucid, now running 2.6.32-24. (Booting the previous kernel did not help.)
After rebooting, I noticed that the login screen had less attractive widgets, which persisted after I logged in. Opening the Appearance Preferences, there were no themes listed. There are a bunch of them in /usr/share/themes. If I copy the Ambiance folder from there to ~/.themes, it will appear in the dialog; but when selected, the Window Border changes, while the Controls do not.
If I run gedit from the shell, I get these messages:
Code:
There was no GTK_PATH environment variable. (Where does it and GTK_MODULES get set globally?) I tried setting it to /usr/lib, but that had no effect.
It looks like a problem finding and/or loading the required files? Permissions? Dependencies?
I typed this cmd : sudo ln -s /home/user_name/.themes /root trying to link themes to root so that apps run as root would use the theme. I found that "ask search engine" installed as default web search engine instead of google in firefox. Now it's impossible to go back to google search engine as "ask" always remains as default search and no other search engins are shown in the firefox list.Any idea about how to get rid of "ask"? I managed to install another "unofficial google" search plugin but if i click on restore default search engine "ask" will be restored.

I have a CENTOS server with Samba installed and a share with about 2 TB of various files (pdf, word, excel, text file, jpeg). I'm looking for an application can help to search quickly inside this large archive. The better solution could be a web interface where each client (normally a windows XP client) could do a search..
