Applications :: Search Engine For Samba

Feb 23, 2010

I have a CENTOS server with Samba installed and a share with about 2 TB of various files (pdf, word, excel, text file, jpeg). I'm looking for an application can help to search quickly inside this large archive. The better solution could be a web interface where each client (normally a windows XP client) could do a search..

Programming :: Implementing Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Mar 31, 2011

Though I have developed some web applications (automation tools) using PHP which have been primarily meant for Intranet (within the organizations I have worked for), I have paid little attention to SEO (it was not required until now). But now I want to understand how do we go about implementing SEO and where do we fit this mechanism in a system / website?

Do we need any other tools or learn some specific programming /scripting language to achieve it?Will implementing a good SEO yield identical results irrespective of what search engine (be it Google or Yahoo!) is being used by users?

Now it's impossible to go back to google search engine as "ask" always remains as default search and no other search engins are shown in the firefox list.Any idea about how to get rid of "ask"? I managed to install another "unofficial google" search plugin but if i click on restore default search engine "ask" will be restored.

Fedora :: Ubuntu To Change Its Default Search Engine To Yahoo?

Apr 4, 2010

Can Fedora change its default search engine to Yahoo! just like Ubuntu is about to change its default search engine from Google to Yahoo!? I'd love that.I don't like Google. Too many unnecessary repetitive indexing of the same or slightly changed titles to links for the same sites. I've always liked Yahoo! from the start.

Applications :: Game Graphical Engine - No WINE ?

Apr 27, 2010

I'll say this first: we want to NOT USE WINE. we don't care how much WINE has advanced, want to avoid reliance on an outside program to run this.

I've been planning a game with someone and we want it to be able to run on linux (Umbuntu base) without wine. It should be able to also run on Windows as well, however.

The game will be a graphical MU* with combat and item systems. We have no budget- it's a shoestring sort of thing.

Here's what has been hashed out so far: Programed in C#, maybe with some .NET graphics will be 2D, however, a 3d effect is wanted for things like ascending and descending (Z axis) Partner wants to use Tom Shane's GUI library (Neoforce Controls) Partner wants to use flatredball as graphics engine I don't care what is used as long as it works without WINE

Here's the problem: Flat red ball uses Direct X and is not openGL compatible (that I'm aware of) and my partner wants the effects from the flat red ball engine. Also, the GUI library he wants is also not openGL compatible.

We need some other opensource or freeware graphics engine that can do things like flat red ball but still work in Linux. GUI packs are also nice. I Tried suggesting but Partner has issues with....Mono - Mono.XNA won't work directly using openGL - thinks it's "too hard" after playing with OpenTK even though I told him they aren't the same Java - too clunky Horde3d - Wouldn't even look at the link

We've only been working on planning stages and aren't too in-depth yet. Also, his former interest in making this run in wine without Linux seems to be dipping right along with a marked increase in wanting to rely on Microsoft.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Search For Applications On 11.04?

Jun 5, 2011

When I click on the application button on Ubuntu 11.04, no search results come up when I type in the search box. For example, if I type in "gedit" nothing appears, and no results appear for "text editor" either. I've tried all case variations, too. Gedit is just an example of a program I know I have installed but still won't come up in search. How do I fix this? Unity is quite useless without it.

Debian :: Setting Up Search And Mount Local Samba Shares?

Aug 1, 2010

I do know how to set up the traditional Window shares by modifying fstab and mkdir /mnt/share. What I was wondering in this day of laptops, if there was a script that could find and mount Window shares that were hooked into your local network, but only on a temporary bases. Something like what you would do mount a usb connection, such as a camera that you had the drivers for. I do know that networks are more complex, was just interested if something like that was developed yet. Just to let you know that my scripting skills are zero, and my ability to do so less.

Software :: Some Applications Will See Mounted Samba Shares And Some Won't

Jul 11, 2011

I have used Linux on and off over the past 15 years. Linux has been the solution to a lot of my networking problems over the years. I work in a school and I am keen to setup Linux labs for the students. Users can logon with their active directory [Micoroft accounts] and can access their files off server drives. All this is made easy with the help of CentrifyDC. I can simply access a network share and CentrifyDC handles the authentication.

My issue is that some applications will see mounted samba shares and some applications won't. For example I can open and save files to my Windows servers using applications such as Openoffice, Gnumeric, Abiword. However apps like DIA will only show local drives. Maybe some applications use the default file manager where the mounts are bookmarked whilst other use their own file manager?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Accessing Samba Shares From Applications?

Jan 4, 2011

I have a NAS running Samba. My Samba shares are accessed from a Windows computer, it works very well.

With the kubuntu 10.04 computer, things are different : I can see the Samba shares in Dolphin, and copy files to the local drive, but lots of applications don't allow me to open a file on a Samba share.

Some applications such as OpenOffice let me browse to the share but refuse to open the remote file

Some other applications don't let me browse to shares at all.

What's up with that ? Surely I'm not the only one wanting to access files on a NAS ? How do other people do it ?

PS I chose kubuntu 10.04 because the 10.10 install hangs, the "ui" workaround I saw here and there did not work, the only solution offered was to go back to 10.04

Fedora Installation :: Apt-get Search Wget Saying Invalid Operation Search?

Apr 5, 2011

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...

All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
