Ubuntu :: How To Remove Ask Search Engine That Installed Itself As Default

I found that "ask search engine" installed as default web search engine instead of google in firefox. Now it's impossible to go back to google search engine as "ask" always remains as default search and no other search engins are shown in the firefox list.Any idea about how to get rid of "ask"? I managed to install another "unofficial google" search plugin but if i click on restore default search engine "ask" will be restored.

I have been using Epiphany for about 10 days now. It seems that suddenly my search engine was changed from Google to VirginMedia.I cannot find any option to set the default search engine, either in Epiphany preferences or in gconf-editor.Can anyone explain how this change has occurred or how I might get back to having Google as my default search engine? I am using Debian Lenny 5 and Epiphany 2.22.3

Can Fedora change its default search engine to Yahoo! just like Ubuntu is about to change its default search engine from Google to Yahoo!? I'd love that.I don't like Google. Too many unnecessary repetitive indexing of the same or slightly changed titles to links for the same sites. I've always liked Yahoo! from the start.

Though I have developed some web applications (automation tools) using PHP which have been primarily meant for Intranet (within the organizations I have worked for), I have paid little attention to SEO (it was not required until now). But now I want to understand how do we go about implementing SEO and where do we fit this mechanism in a system / website?
Do we need any other tools or learn some specific programming /scripting language to achieve it?Will implementing a good SEO yield identical results irrespective of what search engine (be it Google or Yahoo!) is being used by users?

has anyone tried to install Pinot the personal search engine in Maverick? I found the package it depending require package libtextcat0 and libtextcat-data, but once selected, many components of openoffice will be removed.Is this correct behaviour? Or Pinot is not longer supported by Ubuntu

Recently one of the worm is spread in our network & so many unwated files are getting copied on our ubuntu file server like comment.htt, desktop.ini, winfile.exe Now we have clean that worm from our network but few files are remained on ubuntu server as well as in backup folders and i want to search those files and delete it.

how to remove the 'Search and sort section' entirely from the GUI? I would like to only have the cover view in that whole area with just the library size and the buttons on top. I know you can set the cover view to open in a separate window, but then I have to resize the cover view window to cover that whole area every time I start calibre.

I work on Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome.When I open a directory, I can search with Ctrl-f (edited Ctrl-F instead of F3). However, the search starts in my home directory (the home directory is the default). That can be fixed by adding new criteria in the search results. However, I would like to change the default directory always to the directory or folder from which I start the search.How can I convince Nautilus to search by default for files and folder names in the current directory or folder (the one from which I start searching)?

I have installed java-6-sun on my Ubuntu 9.10 and now I wanna change the default system JVM search order. Based on the following instruction I should modify my /etc/jvm.
But there is no jvm in my Ubuntu, all I have is jvm.* which "*" refers to ".h" or other suffix. There is no "jvm" alone in my Ubuntu in order to do what the following says.

Ubuntu Linux comes with update-java-alternatives utility to updates all alternatives
belonging to one runtime or development kit for the Java language. To select, Sun's JVM as provided in Ubuntu 7.10, enter:
$ sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
You also need to edit a file called /etc/jvm This file defines the default system JVM search order. Each JVM should list their JAVA_HOME compatible directory in this file. The default system JVM is the first one available from top to bottom. Open /etc/jvm
$ sudo vi /etc/jvm
Make sure /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun is added to the top of JVM list

I had some major bugs with KDE 4.3 and 4.4 and the only way that I could fix them was to install the entire KDE 4.5. This was mid-Summer. Now I would like to upgrade to Maverick the proper way and have 4.5 in a stock repo.
I managed to get most of kde back to stock by luck and uninstall/reinstalling kdebase stuff and kubuntu-desktop a couple of times. A pain in the neck trying to find important packages that are already installed from a previous PPA.
BTW my sources.list is stock right now.
Does anyone know of a way to search for installed PPA packages that are not in the stock repository?

I've just built gcc 4.6.0 by myself since there is no update in Mandriva yet and I really needed the updated version, but I must be missing something in its configuration. I added ~/apps/gcc460/bin in front of my PATH, and the lib dir to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH in my .bash_profile, like so:

I assume the correct version is the one located in ~/apps/gcc460/lib, but how do I make my project load the correct lib? Is it possible at all to have two versions of gcc on the same machine? I just found that I should've added lib64 to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of lib. Anyways, even if the problem is solved, I'd like to hear if my configuration is well made or if I should leave LD_LIBRARY_PATH unset and use some other way to override the default search path for stdlib.

I have realized that in not installing suggested packages I've missed out on a ton of doc files, which would really come in handy while I'm away from internet access.
Is there a way take a list of currently installed packages and find out which of them have doc packages available? Possibly install them in a single step? I have been playing around with aptitude and apt-rdepends, but I'm not quite sure how to go about this. Somehow take a list of installed packages, run it through an apt-cache search, and end up with a list of -doc packages to install? My bash-fu isn't the greatest, and I suppose this could be a bad idea to begin with.

I searched for a hex editor in the USC, and chose to install a package called okteta. Only problem is...(I didn't realize until after it was too late to cancel)...it's a KDE package.Since it was probably one of the first (only?) KDE based app on this fresh Lucid installation, I believe about 115 (!) packages (see the list below) were installed in addition to the one I wanted. Grrrr.I then went into synaptic and removed okteta, but as I should have known, it did not remove any of the dependencies.I then looked at the dpkg logfile to see what had been installed. During tests with 11.04, I met very big problems on my HP ProBook 6550b, which is all intel , but rather recent hardware, so it is 64bit. When I install ubuntu, the -pae kernel is installed by default. All did work so far with 10.10, but with 11,04 I get frequent crashes, particularly all kind of browsers will crash every few minutes, no way any flash will work, also office seems to freeze the system very frequently.
This regardless if the 11.04 is run from life CD or installed properly. Somewhere I read, that such behavior was cured when the -pae kernel was replaced by its normal (non -pae) variety. On a very old toshiba, with some old celeron, I may not have the initial performance, but crashes are 90 percent less frequent, as there ubuntu chooses non -pae kernel automatically. Therefore I am thinking the -pae kernel could be the problem.

How can I get this package removed? I was able to get a different management tool installed to configure my RAID so I don't need this one. My system appears to be working, but everytime I use apt-get to install something else, it shows the hptraidconf package as failed.
