Ubuntu :: Get User List Dialog At Startup
Jul 17, 2010
My girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite Athlon64 laptop, and she can't get it to go past the user list dialog before it logs all the way in. We've tried her username and password, but every time we enter it, the screen blanks for a moment and then returns to the user list dialog. I've reset the password by booting to terminal, but it still won't let us past the dialog. I'd hate to have to reinstall her system. Is there any way we can get past this? And, why is it not accepting the password? I couldn't find an open bug on this issue.
Also, we had just installed OpenShot Video Editor during the same session. She said she got it from the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm not sure if this messed with her video settings. We can see X trying to start after we put the password in, but it keeps going back to the user list dialog. Actually, I uninstalled OpenShot and gnome-screensaver from the root prompt, just in case they were causing the issue. I had noticed that the laptop was buggy coming in and out of hibernation. I wonder if that's causing X not to start properly? I did check the startup logs and I didn't see any errors there either.

Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:
{ echo "Foo"; sleep 2; echo "Bar"; } | zenity --list --title='Dynamic list?' --text='Some data' --column='values'
How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?

I have one Ubuntu 10.04 machine that is configured this way.I want GDM to prompt the user to enter their username via a text field, and then a password, instead of displaying a list of users to choose from. One way to configure GDM's appearance is to run the following from a terminal: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties.If I remember correctly, there is a different dialog to run than "gnome-appearance- properties" that allows changing whether GDM prompts for a username or displays a list. But I do not know what it is.

About a month ago, I had something go very wrong in my Karmic and my account (with an encrypted home dir) was essentially inaccessible. But I was eventually able to create a new account, and retrieve all my data, but now, for some reason, I cannot edit the 'Startup Applications'.
I open its window and make any changes (which the window seems to accept), but then when I hit close, and restart it, it has been reset to everything I had set from my other account. Which makes little sense.
After that problem, I did have some trouble with permissions of certain files, and am afraid that I inadvertently gave up permissions on my startup applications, but can't imagine what I'd have to do to fix it.some guidance?

I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.

If i press Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Could able to go to Terminal window and able to do all sort of commands.
revert to my original settings so that i will getback my icons / applications list in my desktop.

I'm running Ubuntu maverick meercat 10.10. I don't think it's very necessary to mention my hardware to get an answer to this question.I found out about the Cairo-Dock and fell in love with it. It annoys the hell out of me to have to start it every time I boot. I navigate to- System> Preferences> Startup ApplicationsUnder the startup programs tab I click on add... Now what??? Put the name as Cairo... what about the command. I don't know what file to navigate to.

I want to know if there is any way that one could remove the user list from the login screen requiring the user to type in their user name. I am not quite sure why this feature is not implemented and it is one of the very few things I don't like about Lucid but hopefully there is a fix for it.

In Ubuntu 9.10 I was able to remove the user list from gdm. However in 10.04 I am unable to do this. I searched the forums with no luck.
I opened gconf-editor using sudo and went to apps>gdm>simple-greeter. I then checked disable_user_list.
After complete shutdown, I was still placed in the list screen. I checked gconf-editor and the disable_user_list was still checked.

I have specified firefox should startup using the following procedure:
System > Preferences > Startup Applications > Add
And used the following details:
Name=firefox
Command=/usr/lib/firefox-3.6.11/firefox-bin
But it doesn't start up. I tried also adding a shortcut to the following location:
/home/USER/.config/autostart/SHORTCUT-TO-FIREFOX
The account I'm trying to get it working on is unprivileged. I'm sure it was working yesterday but can't swear if I had added extra permissions at that stage.

Sometimes my user list is empty on start-up. When it happens the buttons beneath the empty list (shutdown, suspend and restart), are not responding. As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..

I have a server with what appears to have 352 home directories (350 actually if you omit '.' & '..') & I am being asked to basically tally a list of whom all 350 users are in alphabetical order. Now I could sit here for days doing the 'finger' command to obtain their full name commented in '/etc/passwd' file but I would assume there is a script or way I could have Linux quirry the '/etc/passwd' file & take all the user 'comment' entries and export them to a list in alphabetical order. Does anyone know if this could happen and if so, how would I do something like this? I can't write bash / shell scripts to save my life
Code:
cmennens@mail]:/$ ls -l
total 160
drwxr-xr-x 352 root root 12288 Oct 21 13:41 home

I have a shared folder that has it's access restricted to certain users on a file server at work. Currently when I try to add a user I follow this process:
Right click the Folder, go to Properties
Click the "Access Control List" tab
Select a user from the "Participants List"
Click Add
For most users this process works fine but with one of them I get the following error:
"Could not add ACL entry: Invalid Argument"
I also tried a script that a former employee created which seems to employ this command:
setfacl -m u:<USER>:rw- <PATH>
Running the command with the correct user and path returns a similar "Invalid Argument" error.
We're using OpenSuse 10.2.
