I noticed that some applications are still in the startup applications list even after i have removed these applications.Would there be any app files left over anywhere / is there a command i can run to clean up the filesystem.Or is it just a case of removing them from the startup app list?
View 3 RepliesAbout a month ago, I had something go very wrong in my Karmic and my account (with an encrypted home dir) was essentially inaccessible. But I was eventually able to create a new account, and retrieve all my data, but now, for some reason, I cannot edit the 'Startup Applications'.
I open its window and make any changes (which the window seems to accept), but then when I hit close, and restart it, it has been reset to everything I had set from my other account. Which makes little sense.
After that problem, I did have some trouble with permissions of certain files, and am afraid that I inadvertently gave up permissions on my startup applications, but can't imagine what I'd have to do to fix it.some guidance?
I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.
I was testing with "Compiz rotate cube" in my Ubuntu machine. Changed some settings by disabling "desktop cube". Something had changed in the mean time.
Now i could able to login. Only blank desktop wall paper i could able to see. No applications list, startup icons displaying.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F = Folder view is displaying, i could able to view my files.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Could able to go to Terminal window and able to do all sort of commands.
revert to my original settings so that i will getback my icons / applications list in my desktop.
I'm running Ubuntu maverick meercat 10.10. I don't think it's very necessary to mention my hardware to get an answer to this question.I found out about the Cairo-Dock and fell in love with it. It annoys the hell out of me to have to start it every time I boot. I navigate to- System> Preferences> Startup ApplicationsUnder the startup programs tab I click on add... Now what??? Put the name as Cairo... what about the command. I don't know what file to navigate to.

In Kick-off the computer section that has yast and run command and another app. YaSt and the other app (I can't remember what it was) have disappeared and only run command is left.

Also I had wine to run an MS application I uninstalled wine, before uninstalling the application. The icons remain, do I need to re-install wine again, uninstall the application then uninstall wine? The file that held the application I deleted, first because I had a brain fade.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy gnome-panel is at the left side of my screen (I use the 'splendid' cairo-dock at the bottom of my screen). But when more than eight windows are open, the dock freezes. The 'Computer' button works, as well as the tray icons. My CPU rushes to 26% constantly. Solution is to kill gnome-panel and it reappears without complaining (if few than 8 windows open).

I'm extremely new to linux I've been a mac user for 6 years but recently purchased a new laptop that has windows 7 and immediately made the switch to ubuntu 10.04 after reading very good things. Problem is I like what I see very much but have no idea what the heck I'm doing and have ran into some problems.
1 How do you delete programs that are under the applications tab? I ask this because I downloaded songbird but my 32 bit system cannot open it so its there but cannot be used. Also how do you delete programs in general that you wont need?

Thats it for now. I've ran commands through the terminal to get the cairo dock and that worked fine along with a few other apps.
I've tried some more recent builds of Libre Office from Alien Bob and I'm still getting crashes when I try to dock the Navigator panel on the left side of the window for any of the office applications.
Details are in this post. More specifically, I'm running libreoffice-3.2.99.3-i486 from Eric. When I run 'oowriter' (Libreoffice Writer) from the command line, and then try to dock the navigator panel, I get this message after the crash:

I just installed openSUSE 11.3 on an old NEC Powermate. After rebooting the first time, the green startup screen with the chameleon is reduced to about one third of the screen surface and sticks to the upper left corner of the screen. Graphic card is an old NVidia Geforce FX4000, which I've been using before using NVidia's legacy drivers. I've been running CentOS, Slackware, Debian and Gentoo before, but right now,looking for a more "comfortable" distro that "just works" (or : almost just works). I have a bit problem with startup here, everytime I change anything in System > Preferences > Startup Applications it just keep coming back to default. I unchecked Penmount Utility, and it's checked again after next boot. Same thing happen when I add Guake Terminal. When I reboot, it's not there anymore. So basically, it seems that I can't configure my startup programs.

I was wondering if there is a way to just launch the programs to the tray. It worked perfectly in Lucid.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have somehow gotten two instances of Mediatomb running on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 how to get rid of one of them.There is one copy running as a daemon on system startup - that's the one I want to keep.There is another copy running when I log in with my user account - this is the one I want to prevent from running.I have looked in my Startup folder in the GUI and also in my .profile script for my user account but I don't see any references to mediatomb there. Where else should I look?I think the daemon version is running via an entry in init.d, but other than where I've already looked I don't know how to find out how the second copy is getting initiated during login. It only seems to show up when I log in to the GUI on Ubuntu - not when I connect to the machine remotely via SSH.

Add netbook-launcher (if using 8.10) to your startup programs. Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and add entry for this command.

After doing the above, two instances of Skype are starting up every time - and I have not checked the "Automatically remember ... " checkbox. I could not find a way to undo this. After doing the above again, three instances of Skype are starting up every time.

So, It appears Im going to have to do a re-install. Which, I really dont mind too much... (especially with Ubuntu) But It will stink if i *again* lose all my bookmarks , and lose track of all my installed programs. The programs, not as much of an issue as the bookmarks in my browser.. I would like to know, If I can somehow access the HDD from the LiveCD, So that I can create just a simple text list of all programs installed on the hdd? I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.
