Ubuntu Servers :: Can Evolution Get A Global Address Exchange List

Sep 22, 2010

I use Ubuntu with Evolution here at work, and we have an Exchange server. can I somehow suck up all of the addresses in the global address list and somehow save them locally and import them to Evolution? Since I can't "link" to the global list it would at least be handy for me to utilize locally.

Ubuntu :: Disable Menu Bars In Windows And Force Global Appmenu?

May 26, 2011

I'm using Filezilla in Natty and it keeps bringing up its own menu bar in its own window.

Obviously I want all my applications to only use the top new Global Appmenu Bar. It currently makes Filezilla look ugly and take up additional unwanted screen space.

Libreoffice fixes are all I can find. Does anyone know how to stop an application from using its own menu bar, and force it to only use the Global App Menu?

Software :: Importing Outlook's Global Address List Contacts To Evolution?

Apr 8, 2010

importing GAL to evolution:

1. In Xp open MS-Access create blank database.

2. From File->Get External Data->Import, Select file type as exchange()

3. Import contacts to new table, u can delete unwanted columns from this table. Now export this table to a csv file.

4. Following is simple code which takes contacts.csv as input and convert these contacts to vcf file which can be imported to evolution.

5. The contact.csv should be of format

FirstName,LastName,emailID
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <errno.h>

[code]....

6. uuidgen should be present on your linux box. you can have other validations and field too as per your need. but these three fields worked best for m

7. ./a.out contact.csv output.vcf Now in evolution go to Contacts->File Import->Import single file, select output.vcf and File type as vcf.

Debian :: Disable For A User The Access To Usb Pen?

May 15, 2010

I want to refuse access for some users to usb pen and audio. In previous releases (debian, ubuntu , debian-based ..) , it is enough to remove the user from the group.

that is in /etc/group
audio:x:29:bela
plugdev:x:46:bela,geol

with theses lines : bela can heard sound, but not geol, for bela and geol the usb pen is automatically mounted. But not for nobody else. It is NOT the case in the new release, I mean, even if I remove a user from the plugdev group, the usb pen is automatically mounted for that user.

Debian Configuration :: Disable Boot Services

Jan 31, 2010

I'm running debian unstable and since there was the switch to dependency based boot I can no longer control my boot services.I used to suppress the services that I use rarely during boot with: sudo update-rc.d -f myservice remove This arranged the links in /etc/rc?.d and everything worked.

Now this command only says: update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing.This seems to work until I upgrade the service to a new version and it is enabled again.Do you have any idea of how to disable boot services permanently with the new system?

Debian Configuration :: Disable Wireless At Startup?

Dec 22, 2010

I've been using Debian since the early days of Lenny being testing as OS on the same Computer. Its a Acer Aspire Notebook with switches for wireless and bluetooth. While booting Lenny my wireless and bluetooth stayed off as long as I didn't switch them on. But since squeeze they get activated ( you can see it by looking at the LED's ) the moment after the grub screen. I now do have to turn bluetooth and wireless off by hand everytime which is quite annoying since I mostly use eth0.

how to disable bluetooth and wireless per default in a way I can simply turn them back on by using the switch?

Debian Configuration :: Cannot See Winbindd In Process List

Mar 2, 2011

I am trying to set up samba using AD to authenticate users. I did a clean install with the latest version of debian (need at least version 3 of samba for this to work). When I first installed winbind and ran "ps -ef | grep winbind", I could see about 4 instances of winbindd running. I set up kerberos and ran kinit and that ran fine, then tried changing my smb.conf file and restarting samba and winbind. Everything seems to appear normal when I restart the daemons, but when I run "ps -ef | grep winbind", I see nothing running.

Debian Configuration :: Apt Sources.list Ssh:// With Custom Port?

Sep 26, 2010

I've setup my own repository which I want to use SSH as the protocol. I managed to get everything working with an SSH key using port 22. Now, I would like to change the SSH port. I've already changed it on the SSH/repo server. Now I can't figure out how to change apt to use a custom port on the client computer.

My sources.list file line which worked over port 22: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free I've tried: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1:12345/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free and it fails and actually says "failed connecting to port 22"

Can this be done? I've searched google for hours and I getting nothing but unrelated data. I've read the man pages. The man page for apt.conf specified that you can set the port this way for HTTP, but doesn't mention anything about ssh ports.

Debian Configuration :: Removing List Of Unwanted Packages

May 5, 2011

I have a fresh Debian install, since this install was on a desktop, I had an internet connection and didn't notice (it was late, I was half asleep) I opted to download a whole load of packages I didn't really need. I thought all was doomed until I remembered that I have done another Debian install but a week ago on a laptop, which has a nice clean install without all the bloat.

So I ran dpkg --get-selections > selections
and had it sent to my new desktop installation.

Now if I run dpkg --set-selections < selections followed by dselect-upgrade nothing happens. I assume this is because the smaller list contains all the packages 'to be installed' which already are, and all the missing packages are not being purged. Do I need to explicitly add all the packages I want to purge to the 'selection' list or is there a better way of doing it?

Debian Configuration :: Configuring Sources.list File ?

May 19, 2011

About configuring my sources.list file.

The default file was:

To which I have added this: deb [url] stable all

Today I decided to include again Debian Volatile and discovered that it doesn't exist anymore and that I can get the same packages using this line: deb [url] squeeze-updates main

And the first question is: is this the same than debian-security?

Then, I decided to use [url] to make things less confused, and this was the output:

The first line is Ok. The second line, I guest it's the same than my second line. But, the third, is something different. So, the main question is: what is the difference between squeeze-proposed-updates and squeeze-updates? Are those repos completely separated from squeeze/updates (in security.debian.org)? And, what else should I add to have an always up-to-date and secure system?

I also tried setterm -blength 0, xset -b in startup scripts. They disable terminal-beeps, but not the halt or the gdm login beep. I tried wasting around with the gconftool, but nothing happened. It is an annoying sound. If you use, init 0 to shut down, no beep comes up.
