Or would this sacrifice security in some way? I've been using root only, and am ready to have a seperate account now. It's the dotfiles for GUI apps that I'm concerned about:

I checked but the user is added to the netdev group...

Debian Multimedia :: Restoring Contact List In Squeeze With KDE

Oct 18, 2010

I used Kubuntu with KDE 4.5.1 up to August, when I switched to Debian Squeeze with KDE (currently frozen at 4.4.5). Before migrating, I used rsync (luckbackup) to backup the whole Home directory. Kontact version used on Debian is now 4.4.6. While I could use the import feature successfully to retrieve all my e-mail messages by pointing it to ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/, I couldn't find a way to do the same with contacts.

I don't have backups of my old ~/.local/share/contacts, the folder simply doesn't exist. However, I have ~/.local/share/akonadi. I never used Akonadi Tray Icon to create a backup. In KAddressBook, I have Personal Contacts, which is empty. While waiting for a solution, I filled Default Address Book with some contacts' e-mail addresses retrieved manually from archived past e-mails.

In ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc I have the following:

1) a folder named lock, containing a text file named _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcf4g7TNh8g and another called _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcfXASyTlNE. If opened, they show 1372 kontact, and 1629 korgac respectively.

2) A file named std.vcf of 0B size.

3) 8 files, numbered progressively, named "std.vcf__ std.vcf__7, all of which are also of 0B size.

I tried renaming the old /kabc to /kabc.old (in case it got modified in the process) and used a copy of it as a target for Default Address Book in KDE Resources, whose path was changed to point to it. Nothing changed, when I reopened KaddressBook there were still only the new contacts I manually created.

Akonadi Configuration shows Personal Contacts, and it correctly points to ~/.local/share/contacts/, but if the folder isn't there I'm not sure what it's pointing to. I also have a Default Address Book, and when I click on Modify, instead of showing a path like Personal Contacts did, it shows a blank field. When I click on Open File Dialog, it expects me to point it to a vCard Address Book File.

If I'm back to KAddressBook, and open the Personal Contacts addressbook to import the the only vCard I am aware of (the 0B sized std.vcf file in /kabc) nothing happens, it remains empty.

Debian Hardware :: Upgrade Squeeze To Jessie Changes IRQ List

Dec 18, 2015

I'm running a Debian derivative (Voyage linux). With the latest version based on Debian 8.0 Jessie and kernel 3.14.12 I have frequent pops, clicks and stutters in sound played through a USB dac, especially with higher resolution files. A previous version of this distribution worked fine, which was based on Debian 6.0.2 "Squeeze" and kernel 2.6.38. The files played are stored on a pata (to sata) device.I suspect I have an IRQ problem, I've made the following observations:

- The following processes are producing a combined 15-20% cpu load depending on the resolution currently being played. In the Squeeze based distribution these processes are not visible, so I'm not sure what that means.
irq/15-ehci_hcd
irq/15-ohci_
irq/15-pata_amd_hcd
- ksoftirq is also slightly elevated at 1.6 when running 'Jessie' compared to 0 on the 'Squeeze'
- The si line in 'top' seems also to be quite high (between 2 and 7) compared to when running 'Squeeze' (between 0 and and occasional 0.3).
- system load is also quite high

Below I have the contents of /proc/interrupts. It seems the problem lies in irq 15 being shared between usb and pata device(s). I already tried adding a few kernel options but without results: a.o. pci=routeirq, acpi=off. The latter did change the order of irq15, moving the pata device one position up.

'Squeeze' distribution: cat /proc/interrupts
CPU0
0: 2610959 XT-PIC-XT-PIC timer
1: 0 XT-PIC-XT-PIC i8042
2: 0 XT-PIC-XT-PIC cascade
3: 1 XT-PIC-XT-PIC

I tried resetting the password as administrator (passwd 'user'), but when the user tries, the new password isn't recognized.

How can I implement this: I encrypt a partition using LUKS, and store personal data on this partition. Then create a user account that solely deals with this partition and insulated from the Internet. Normally for each boot I do not even need to mount the LUKS encrypted partition, and when I mount that partition under that special user account, I can make sure that the Internet is cut off.

I'm going to do the installation these days, could you provide a brief sketch regarding what steps I should go through to implement the above result?

Ubuntu :: User Not In The Sudoers File?

Jul 15, 2011

I have a bit of a problem... I thought (for certain reasons) I would just add myself to root group and therefore gain some more rights for my account. I could sudo before... But once I gained the root group as a secondary group it says I am not in the sudoers file anymore...

Code:
id
uid=1000(kosta) gid=1000(kosta) groups=0(root),1000(kosta)
Code:
sudo ls
[sudo] password for kosta:

kosta is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported. It is really weird and messed up. I can view sudoers file but not edit it... I can cat passwd but I can not view syslog. Is there any way to fix this without having to reboot to recovery mode? And why the heck is this happening after all?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Add User To Sudoers

Jul 16, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 13 "Goddard" using the graphical installer (although I prefer the 'text/ reduced graphics' option. When I start the system (after installation completes), it runs in graphical mode and presents me with a graphical login prompt. However, due to security reasons (I'm told), it won't let me log on as the root/ admin user (which is fair enough). If I log on as another user (eg : alpha, charlie or delta, for this example), I can't edit the sudoes file to add one of these users (alpha) to the file. This is because these users aren't in the file, as far as I know.

At no stage during installation was I offered an option of either setting the runlevel or adding a non-root user to the sudoers file.I have found a way to change the runlevel setting, so that is not really an issue. What I would like is either of the following :

1. A modification to Fedora's graphical installer that allows for an explicit option to set the runlevel (graphical/ command-line) and another option to add the first created non-admin user (alpha in this example) to the sudoers file.

2. Information on how to add a user to the sudoers file without adding all others (eg : alpha, but not charlie and delta, in this example).

I have read the relevant man and info pages for the su, sudo, sudoers and visudo commands, but I only got confused. (I don't know BNF/ EBNF and I would like a solution that doesn't involve having to learn these BNF dialects, although I will if I have to.)Also, I have seen solutions that show how to add all users, but not individual users, to the sudoers file. What I want is to add an individual user (if this isn't clear already). Please feel free to send me an e-mail about this post : nigel.nq.ngw[at]gmail[dot]com with the subject line "Linux Forums - Fedora 13 Add User to Sudoers"
