One of the default entries in the list of Startup Applications is "GSettings Data Conversion". Do I want it or can I turn it off and leave it off?
View 2 RepliesAbout a month ago, I had something go very wrong in my Karmic and my account (with an encrypted home dir) was essentially inaccessible. But I was eventually able to create a new account, and retrieve all my data, but now, for some reason, I cannot edit the 'Startup Applications'.
I open its window and make any changes (which the window seems to accept), but then when I hit close, and restart it, it has been reset to everything I had set from my other account. Which makes little sense.
After that problem, I did have some trouble with permissions of certain files, and am afraid that I inadvertently gave up permissions on my startup applications, but can't imagine what I'd have to do to fix it.some guidance?
I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.
I noticed that some applications are still in the startup applications list even after i have removed these applications.Would there be any app files left over anywhere / is there a command i can run to clean up the filesystem.Or is it just a case of removing them from the startup app list?

I was testing with "Compiz rotate cube" in my Ubuntu machine. Changed some settings by disabling "desktop cube". Something had changed in the mean time.
Now i could able to login. Only blank desktop wall paper i could able to see. No applications list, startup icons displaying.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F = Folder view is displaying, i could able to view my files.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Could able to go to Terminal window and able to do all sort of commands.
revert to my original settings so that i will getback my icons / applications list in my desktop.
I'm running Ubuntu maverick meercat 10.10. I don't think it's very necessary to mention my hardware to get an answer to this question.I found out about the Cairo-Dock and fell in love with it. It annoys the hell out of me to have to start it every time I boot. I navigate to- System> Preferences> Startup ApplicationsUnder the startup programs tab I click on add... Now what??? Put the name as Cairo... what about the command. I don't know what file to navigate to.

I could not download the conversion software on to my HP mini which is run on Open SUSE. I tried on my MAC. The software got downloaded alright, but when I open the file -- hmm....its meant for Windows run computers-- all I can see is a whole string of undecipherable codes in the download!!

I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.
I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed?The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a comparative newbie, especially with using WINE. I installed it through the F12 package installer. I then found that the Applications menu entries were inoperative. Just plain dead. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. No improvement. Tried again from terminal using yum no change. The only way I've got anything to work is if I run from terminal as root. I know that if the .wine directory is created with root it may only work with root. I've tried deleting that directory, but I'm not sure I succeeded. I don't see the .wine directory but nothing runs with a non-root login.
When I do see errors, they are mostly that the program can't be found in a WINE "DOS" directory. I did get two MS Office apps installed (as test cases) but, again, F12 menu items don't work and I can only run them as root. I think internet access is cut off as well (can't get them to activate). I guess my overall question is: How do I install WINE in F12 such that the menu items work for non-root logins? If there's already a guide, wiki or FAQ, I'd be happy to know where it is.
I have two entries (identical ones) of the same app under Applications on my gnome panel. How can I remove one of them?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh copy of 10.10 - i used the erase entire disk and use for 10.10 option after having earlier troubles of the same booting into 10.10 after installing it over the old / partition. it says:
error: couldn't read file.
error: you need to load the kernel first.
Failed to boot both default and fallback entries.One partition, of 10.10 and no idea where to go...
I've searched for specific entries, bluetooth, Bluez, etc. with no luck. Minor detail but...

I don't mind having the listing of nearly every program on my machine. What IS bothering me is the repeated entries. For example, I have Archive Mounter listed twice (one with icon, the other not). I have Banshee Media Player 3 times, DivX Player 4 times and Internet Explorer(via wine) a whopping 12 times! Where are these repeated entries and how can I remove them? I have a nice script that I've placed in the Startup Applications that open some windows for me when I reboot the computer and login. But when I connect remotely via RDP it runs this script too... and that isn't desirable. Is there a way I can prevent the script from running when I login through RDP?

I was unable to remove these from the menu for some reason, so I removed the entire Wine category. It was not re-added upon reinstalling Wine... do I have to add it all back manually, or is there some way to have it appear as it did when originally installed?

It worked fine, but then I installed avant-windows-navigator and I think it created some conflicts with compiz and other applications.Both the desktop terminal and Skype started to appear in duplicate when I logged in. So I went to the startup applications menu and disabled them both. When I logged back in they both appear only once, but the terminal is in the wrong spot in the desktop.So there are probably some startup registers somewhere that are causing this.i've tried reinstalling compiz and I uninstall AWN and it didn't work.
I've just moved to Ubuntu and using Linux on the desktop in general. I use RHEL on a daily basis for work so don't really have much experience with window managers etc but like to understand how I'm doing what I'm doing. In that regard, I've configured a couple of scripts to be run when I login using 'System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications' but what I want to know is where do these settings actually get stored within the file system?

Yesterday i was adding Tomboy note to my startup applications and i don't know why but since that i'm having a 50 seconds delay between the time i see my wallpaper and icons and the time my startup applications start to load. In this delay my CPU is stable and don't work at all.
Xfce is on my girlfriend netbook too and it seems that we have the same configurations when i look in "session and startup".
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 Host laptop. I install VirtualBox guest additions. Then I installed Chromium. I want Chromium to autostart whenever the Virtual Machine (Ubuntu) boots up. When I add the entry (system/preferences/startup) I use the command chromium-browser. It stays there until I reboot. After I reboot it disappears from the startup applications and does not startup like it should.

When I open Startup Applications (System --> Preferences -->) and uncheck a startup program, close Startup Applications and open it again, the program I unchecked is checked again. I've made a full system backup, but before I take the plunge I want to get a list of all installed applications. I have tons of special applications installed, many of which took tweaks to get running. Just in case something breaks so badly that I have to reinstall I want to be sure I can put everything back, even if it takes me several days work.I know I have read about utilities that will generate a list of installed apps, but I can't find any.
