Ubuntu :: Minimize Open Terminal Window To An Icon On My Taskbar?

I have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?
I'm looking for a way to may the open windows show just an icon on the taskbar instead of the icon/text/rectangle that's default. Something similar to Windows 7.
I have this error which happens just after login, and it stay in the bottom panel all the time with a world icon, it's impossible to close (see image below), if I click the world icon the error message pop ups again. How do I make it go away?
I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
I have an icon theme going, and when using 'gnome-terminal', the window of the terminal uses the icon from the theme. When using 'xfce4-terminal' however (which I prefer, given how I now run xfce), the window uses its own icon (that draws a large dollar sign in the middle of a black monitor) and simply ignores the terminal icon from the theme.
Is there a way to set a default terminal window size when I click on the "Terminal" icon? I need my terminal to be of a certain size every time I click on it?
I have been a long time Windows OS user. I am in the process of learning Linux in a college class that is focused around Ubuntu.I like how in Windows OS that when you lick minimize in a window that the open window will minimize to the task bar. Is there away to do this in Ubuntu 9.10 ? I will need a n00b step by step how to for this one.
I have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.
I tried this: The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way: [Autorun] Action=Start Blue512MB Icon=BlueFlashIconBlueFlashIcon.ico Label=Blue512MB
Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~
Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?
How to merge maximize and minimize thing on the same taskbar where the application places system things are? Its annoying to move cursor on top to maximize or minimize the window.
is taht possible to have the kate terminal open in new window?i dont like very much to have it in the same windows as the kate and so i would like to have it in another window
when I use the fork() function in C it creates a child process but all the output and input is binded to the same terminal as the father process.my question is, how do i make the new process open a new terminal window in linux?
After a cleaning of some software from my ubuntu (Jaunty) desktop I am no longer able to open a terminal window in Gnome.I tried to reinstall gnome terminal from synaptic but this made no difference...In the command line that you get with Alt-F2 I tried the code: man ls and a terminal window opens but after exiting the man page (q) it disappears!
I just love Linux! I am using Fedora 14 and just starting out. I am curious as to why is that when I click the Firefox icon to launch the internet from the menu bar a Linux terminal window has to be open. If I close that particular terminal, (which by the way says "Terminal" and does not show my chosen host name) Firefox closes. If I go to Applications, then Internet, then Firefox to launch the browser, the terminal doesn't open.
is there a Terminal command to open a Target file (same as the one opens when you want to upload a file), let user choose the file and when he clicks open, be able to save his choice?for example:echo "Choose source file"--> command needed to browseand then open or save path to that file
When I click the Firefox icon, normally I can maximize and minimize in the window (either top or bottom panel). This has disappeared and I am not sure why. I had installed [URL... and suddenly after deleting/cleaning it up/restoring panels I cannot see why or how I can easily maximize or minimize any panel, not just Firefox.
i cannot work out how to get the calculator icon on my top taskbar so i can access it fast from there, i know that with ubuntu you right click on it and add to taskbar, this doesnt seem to do it with xubuntu, i cannot work out how to do it.
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 there is an icon left of the clock, its for Assistive Technologies - Universal Access Preferences. I have uninstalled the program, but the icon remains left of the clock. how to remove that icon.
I'm completely new to Linux. I'm having the hardest time trying to do the simplest things. I'm using Kopete and I was wondering if I can put the icon on the system taskbar by the clock? I can't drag it there, won't work. I also tried to right click the taskbar and open 'add new items' but Kepete doesn't show on the list.
I have an icon for what seems to be universal access preferences modifying that is residing near my notification area on top GNOME panel. I have been trying to figure out how to get rid of it, but can't seem to. I took the program off of autostart apps, and have checked running processes to see if I could find which program has it going but I have exhausted my limited knowledge base in solving this.
I really like the new, MacOS-like icons in the taskbar. The problem is that if I change the icon theme (to something else than the themes present in ubuntu by default;e the Shiki-Wise theme) the nice icons in the taskbar are gone too. Is there a way of keeping those?
I just have used ubuntu for few day and i have a problem. 2 day ago, the firefox icon when i minimize was at the cairo dock but now it is at the notification area i not sure what i did?
I am running 64bit 10.04 on my Dell Latitude D620 with a BCM4328. The hardware drivers are working and I can connect to my wireless network but...The annoyance is the wireless icon in the task bar does not show a connected status. Instead I get a grayed out icon with a red exclamation point over it. I am connected though.
