Ubuntu :: Error - The Update Information Is Outdated
Mar 25, 2011
I have a problem with updating files in the update manager. Each time i do an update a red exclamation mark shows up eith the following error message : The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon ant then selecting "check for updates"and check if some of the listed repositories fail. I tried doing this manually but nothing happens. I get a message saying that my system is up to date, and just underneath that it says "the package information was last updated 17 days ago".
Wondered if anyone had a fix for this bug? I have been successfully updating my PC daily, however every now and again i get the warning triangle in the top right hand corner stating Update manger even thought updated almost daily reports "The package information was updated 26 days ago".
I have been into synaptic manager and slected best server for my updates and then i go into update manager and update the system, however, it doesnt solve it.
Ubuntu tried to update, but some problems occurred. The triangle with an exclamation point in it showed up and I rolled my mouse over it.This is what it says:
"The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selection 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."
I did what it says and this came up:"The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."
and in the white box below the message:"Failed to fetch url 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
I switched off all updates just because I want to let the system update when I tell her to. But this red triangle in my systray is annoying me terribly a coupe of days after an update which actully forces me to just update it! How can I get rid of the evil red triangle?
I receive these messages after I enter my user_id and password in Ubuntu 9.04;
"An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for update notifier. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly." then clicking on details box this can be seen;- {Failed to connect configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBIT, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))}
then there's another error message;
"An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for evolution-alarm-notify. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly." then clicking on details box this can be seen;- {Failed to connect configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBIT, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))}
I noticed a red triangle at the top right of my screen today and I've been trying to sort out the problem. is says "update information is outdated" I used the update like it suggested but get this error msg. I'm new to ubuntu/linux so explain in simple terms: "Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. [URL].. 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."
I'm using 10.10 i386 on hp pavilion dv9620us. The top panel keeps showing a red triangular caution alert that when moused over reads: "The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for Updates'and check if some of the repositories fail." I had clicked this button a few times. The first time it installed a kernel update. The next couple times I don't think it did anything but check for updates.
I've installed Ubuntu five months ago, and updated to 11.04. About two months ago, a red triangle started appearing in tray from now and then, with this message: The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.
When I open the Update Manager to check for updates, it says: Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection.
Details: W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found , W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
My connection is just fine and when there actually are updates, everything works great, so I don't understand why the red triangle goes on showing up in tray.
I'm using openSUSE 11.3 M7, recently I'm getting following message -
Code:
linux-kqyd:/home/anant # zypper up PackageKit is blocking zypper. This happens if you have an updater applet or other software management application using PackageKit running. Tell PackageKit to quit? [yes/no] (no): yes
I have a Dell Vostro 3500, which has a Broadcom wifi card. It requires non free drivers. So far it has been working well. However, after updating the kernel (via yum update), my wifi card (it used to be eth1) is totally gone: $ ifconfig eth1 eth1: error fetching interface information: Device not found The wireless indicator does not light up either. The kernel version is
I have been constantly getting the red "Warning Symbol" that tells me that my "Update information is outdated."Of course I luse Update Manager and "Sudo Apt-get update/upgrade" in Terminal, but this appears after a bit, everytime I reboot. Could this be related to the GetDeb archives being offline (If so, then someone needs to get this fixed; an offline repo is not worthy of a "DANGER WARNING ATTENTION" symbol!
I am running 11.04 on an HP tx2 laptop. I have been able to perform updates until the last one. Then I get the following message when I try to use update manager or terminal to get updates or just to generally install a new program. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.egr.msu.edu_pub_ubuntu_archive_dists_natty-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.
I got my version of clamav working and it's fully updated. Problem is I can't seem to get my LibClamAV to function correctly. The output of #freshclam works But when I do: #service clamd.amavisd restart
This is the error:
LibClamAV Warning: *********************************************************** LibClamAV Warning: *** This version of the ClamAV engine is outdated. *** LibClamAV Warning: *** DON'T PANIC! Read http://www.clamav.net/support/faq *** LibClamAV Warning: ***********************************************************
My version is updtodate and I am unsure why the error. I am using amavisd-new-2.5.2 (20070627) and Clamav 0.95.3

I cannot update package information in Synaptic Package Manager. In terminal window it shows inability to connect to 10.3.2.1:8080 (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid etc). If I point to this url in my browser I can access the files.
i am unable to open update manager when i open it , it gives back a msg stating that cannot initialize the package information. and here is the error msg.
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
And when i tried with #sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
and even i tried with deleting that file(security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages) but was unsuccessful.
I've been plagued with this problem now for months. Updates complete normally, but within an hour of booting my Ubuntu installation, a small, odious, snivelling icon appears in my system tray. It's a red triangle around an exclamation mark, and if I hover over it, it informs me: The update information is outdated. The may be caused by, etc. How many times (to 'check for updates and see if any of the repositories fail). They never do, and it never goes away. How can I get rid of it?
HMy Update Manager and Synaptic Package Manager are showing me the following massage when I try to open them: Could not initialize the package information.An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list etc /apt/ sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-lucid.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.
I upgraded Ubuntu 11.04 x86 to Ubuntu 11.10 x86 via system upgrade. Everything was working fine.The setup is dual boot with Windows 7 Ultimate inan old Dell Inspiron 600M.One day when I signed into Ubuntu, following error message showed up when I try to check for update."Could not initialize package information.

I am creating custom install media using the Fedora Core 14 DVD as a base and I have gathered all of the packages and their dependencies I require using the yumdownloader command.I made sure to download the @core group along with the ones listed above. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to update the media's repo information to reflect some of the updated packages I have downloaded. So when I go to install on the device, it's saying it can't read/open a certain package and you can see that it's looking for an older version because I'm guessing its repo is telling anaconda that this is the specific version to look for. I'm looking for a way to "update" the repo found on the installation media.
I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

Whenever I go to update I press check and I get "Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection." Well obviously I don't need to check my internet connection if I'm posting this thread. I am using Google Chrome and it's as fast as can be. When I run
