Ubuntu :: Updating System / Saying Update Information Is Outdated?
Aug 3, 2010
Ubuntu tried to update, but some problems occurred. The triangle with an exclamation point in it showed up and I rolled my mouse over it.This is what it says:
"The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selection 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."
I did what it says and this came up:"The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."
and in the white box below the message:"Failed to fetch url 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon ant then selecting "check for updates"and check if some of the listed repositories fail. I tried doing this manually but nothing happens. I get a message saying that my system is up to date, and just underneath that it says "the package information was last updated 17 days ago".

I noticed a red triangle at the top right of my screen today and I've been trying to sort out the problem. is says "update information is outdated" I used the update like it suggested but get this error msg. I'm new to ubuntu/linux so explain in simple terms: "Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. [URL].. 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

I'm using 10.10 i386 on hp pavilion dv9620us. The top panel keeps showing a red triangular caution alert that when moused over reads: "The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for Updates'and check if some of the repositories fail." I had clicked this button a few times. The first time it installed a kernel update. The next couple times I don't think it did anything but check for updates.

I've installed Ubuntu five months ago, and updated to 11.04. About two months ago, a red triangle started appearing in tray from now and then, with this message: The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.
When I open the Update Manager to check for updates, it says:
Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection.
Details:
W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
My connection is just fine and when there actually are updates, everything works great, so I don't understand why the red triangle goes on showing up in tray.

I have been constantly getting the red "Warning Symbol" that tells me that my "Update information is outdated."Of course I luse Update Manager and "Sudo Apt-get update/upgrade" in Terminal, but this appears after a bit, everytime I reboot. Could this be related to the GetDeb archives being offline (If so, then someone needs to get this fixed; an offline repo is not worthy of a "DANGER WARNING ATTENTION" symbol!

I just updated some user account information on my server and when I log on from a client it the ypcat passwd command shows the old info. How do I make it update? A related question... my NIS users can only log in on client machines using the terminal; it doesn't work at the graphical login screen. Is this normal? I'm new to NIS (just set it up last night) and still getting this stuff sorted out.

I have two servers complaining about ClamAV being outdated:
WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED!
WARNING: Local version: 0.96.1 Recommended version: 0.96.3
Doing an aptitude update says I don't have to upgrade anything. Why is this? Must ClamAV be updated manually?

I've been plagued with this problem now for months. Updates complete normally, but within an hour of booting my Ubuntu installation, a small, odious, snivelling icon appears in my system tray. It's a red triangle around an exclamation mark, and if I hover over it, it informs me: The update information is outdated. The may be caused by, etc. How many times (to 'check for updates and see if any of the repositories fail). They never do, and it never goes away. How can I get rid of it?

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and enabled Remote Desktop access on the machine. Using vncviewer from my XP box, I can log in just fine, but I'm not getting the screen refreshed in vncviewer. The Ubuntu box is getting all the mouse movements and clicks (I can see the ubuntu box from the XP box - I can see the mouse cursor moving around and I can see the menus being selected, etc.) Those events are just not showing up in the vcnviewer, though. TightVNCviewer version 1.3.10.
FWIW, prior to installing 10.04 I had 7.10 on that box and everything worked as it should. No changes on the XP box. I doubt it's relevant, but I had a power supply failure on the Ubuntu box, replaced that as well as the mother board - some of the capacitors looked like they were ready to go. I believe the new motherboard has a different nvidea-based on-board video chip. Since I had to replace the PS and mobo, I figured I might as well install 10.04 while I was at it.

I've tried using a script to run incremental backups. The idea was to use the update switch to just update the files in the .tar instead of creating new ones. However it seems to have created duplicate files in the tar instead of just updating them (refer to screenshot). Is this normal?
Here is the command in the script;
Code:
tar -uvpf /home/jonny/.BackUps/Updating/Documents.tar /home/jonny/Documents
Is there a way stop this but still have them update to the latest version?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager originally showed the update to Ubuntu 10.04 and I pressed the update button. Midway through the update, my internet died so I just cancelled the update. My internet is working again and I'm trying to update but the update manager won't show the update button. I've pressed check a bunch of times and installed all the other updates but I can't see the distribution update.
