Ubuntu :: Update Info Outdated - Repo No Longer Available

Jul 9, 2010

I noticed a red triangle at the top right of my screen today and I've been trying to sort out the problem. is says "update information is outdated" I used the update like it suggested but get this error msg. I'm new to ubuntu/linux so explain in simple terms: "Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. [URL].. 404 Not Found Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Update Info Outdated / Repo No Longer Available

Nov 24, 2010

I'm using 10.10 i386 on hp pavilion dv9620us. The top panel keeps showing a red triangular caution alert that when moused over reads: "The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for Updates'and check if some of the repositories fail." I had clicked this button a few times. The first time it installed a kernel update. The next couple times I don't think it did anything but check for updates.

Ubuntu :: Red Triangle Shown - Update Info Outdated

Jul 12, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu five months ago, and updated to 11.04. About two months ago, a red triangle started appearing in tray from now and then, with this message: The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.

When I open the Update Manager to check for updates, it says:
Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection.

Details:
W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

My connection is just fine and when there actually are updates, everything works great, so I don't understand why the red triangle goes on showing up in tray.

Debian :: Fail To Download Repo Info From Servers

Sep 10, 2011

I can't seem to update the repository indexes regardless of which official server/mirror I use. I pick one server from the built-in software sources list and then I get this:

W:Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/updates/contrib/source/Sources.gz
Unable to fetch file, server said 'Failed to open file. ' [IP: 130.230.54.99 21],
W:Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/updates/non-free/source/Sources.gz
Unable to fetch file, server said 'Failed to open file. ' [IP: 130.230.54.99 21],
W:Failed to fetch http: [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 128.30.2.36 80],
W:Failed to fetch http: [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 128.30.2.36 80],
W:Failed to fetch http: [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 128.30.2.36 80],
W:Failed to fetch ftp://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/updates/main/source/Sources.gz
Unable to fetch file, server said 'Failed to open file. ' [IP: 130.230.54.99 21],
E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Now how can that be? Shouldn't the built-in repository addresses be correct? My installation is one week old clean install. Since then I've installed broadcom wlan-drivers (I tried repo update w/ wired connection too) and Dropbox but other than that I'm pretty clean.

Ubuntu :: Updating System / Saying Update Information Is Outdated?

Aug 3, 2010

Ubuntu tried to update, but some problems occurred. The triangle with an exclamation point in it showed up and I rolled my mouse over it.This is what it says:

"The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selection 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."

I did what it says and this came up:"The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

and in the white box below the message:"Failed to fetch url 404 Not Found

Slackware :: KDE 4.6.0 (from Alien Bob's Ktown Repo), Battery Monitor No Longer Works?

Feb 22, 2011

I am running Slackware64 -current. I just upgraded KDE to 4.6.0 from Alien Bob's ktown repo, and upon doing so my battery monitor no longer functions properly. More specifically, the icon will appear in the panel, but when I choose the option to show the charge/discharge state it does not show. The icon only ever shows that the battery is not plugged in to an external power source (showing a plug and a red x). It is important that I get the battery monitor functional once again as I am running my new Slackware64 -current install on a laptop and don't like to be left wondering when my laptop's battery will die and if I need to plug it in.

Ubuntu :: Causes Apt-get Update To Ign A Repo?

Everytime in the last couple days when I've run either apt-get update or aptitude update, http://ppa.launchpad.net is ignored:

[sudo] password for ann:
Ign http://mirror.peer1.net natty InRelease
Ign http://mirror.peer1.net natty-updates InRelease

Others are ignored too, but ppa.launchpad.net is the only one I care about. I've tried a few different mirrors with the same result. I'm able to ping ppa.launchpad.net just fine, and am not experiencing any other network weirdness.

Is there an easy way/place to get more info on the updates that the Ubuntu (9.04) Update Manager presents to you? I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Download Package Info Via Update Manager

Feb 28, 2010

When I open Update Manager and click "check," it starts downloading package information and then the following pops up: Could not download all repository indexes.

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago.
