I have just tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 using the update manager
It asks me for me password and then a window opens saying "Upgrading Ubuntu to version 10.10"
It gets to "setting new software channels" then a message pops up saying "third party sources disabled" next a little error icon appears in the Notification Area then another message saying: Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
-Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
-Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
-Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I have been trying to install pidgin via one click from the software sources and I can download the file fine but whey yaST2 starts, it hangs for a while and I get error. Also I can't get any updates as the same issue appears.

I am trying to update from ubuntu 10.04.1 to 10.10 using the do-release-upgrade command. I get this error:

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'update-manager-core' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
The first two can't be correct right? So... If the third one is true. How can I find these packages? Or, is there any other way to upgrade to 10.10?

I receive these messages after I enter my user_id and password in Ubuntu 9.04;

Some of your configuration settings may not work properly." then clicking on details box this can be seen;- {Failed to connect configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBIT, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))}
then there's another error message;

I've been having issues with the omega.cert on Pidgin and tried to upgrade to 2.7.7 today. I clicked on the link from the Pidgin site to download the ppa package "pidgin-ppa_0.0.3_all.deb" and tried to open with GDebi Package Installer but it tells me it couldn't be opened because an unknown error occurred.

I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

I am running 11.04 on an HP tx2 laptop. I have been able to perform updates until the last one. Then I get the following message when I try to use update manager or terminal to get updates or just to generally install a new program. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.

i installed kernel 2.6.34 to fix my lid closing issue, and that went great. but now when i go to reinstall my broadcom i get this error. Code: Reading package lists... I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

I have installed slackware 13.1 on my friends laptop. Its an msi laptop . dual core 2ghz, 1gb ram nividia 9000 series.etc. everything is fine but after installing mplayer codecs from slackbuild and also xvidcore, i am not able to play avi files in mplayer. It is giving me a fatal error saying. error initializing -vo device. i tried to change the video driver. it was by default xv then i tried X11(xvid) then open gl and open gl with max textures . when i made it to open gl with max textures the video out came but it is lagging with the audio.

I found that some folks were editing their .mplayer/gui.conf file to read vo_driver = "x11" and were having success with it. I have 2 hard drives on mu box 1st one is 500.0 MB ext4 Volume where I have my syste FC 13 and a 2nd one where I put my database files as follows 78.1 GB ext4 Volume usage = filesystem, format ext4
