i just installed ubuntu natty from windows few days ago , then switched to Xubuntu for better performance with my 512 ram .
now the application menu gives me "No application found" , but i can still open applications from terminal. and updates are installed.
i tried to add new application menu but still the same , there isn't anything odd in "edit menu" , i choosed the default one but still no applications found.
while running jdowanloader from terminal i noticed that "package manager file " or something like that doesn't exist ,
how can i fix the menu ? or at least how can i install its plugin?
when i switched for linux i was looking for performance and stability of the system on my relatively low spec pc , but Xubuntu freezes and hangs may be more than winXp "i still don't know why", and performance isn't that fast "swap memory 767 , ram 488 , nearly all the windows effects are disabled." ,
ubuntu software center also greatly slows the system when i run it
how can i can make Xubuntu faster than that? or at least stop freezing? how to fix ubuntu software center freeze??
I am trying to install wine in ubuntu 8.04. While installation getting the error 'No suitable package flex found'. I tried to find out flex package in adobe as well as other sites. unable to find out.
I'm trying to install the projectM visualizer and I'm running into some problems. Initially, I tried to install it by running "sudo apt-get install libvisual-projectm", which seemed to work... except there's no launcher for it in my Applications menu and "projectM-pulseaudio" returns "command not found". From there, I decided to try to build it myself, by following this guide (<- link). It went well until the "make" command, which returns the following error:
I'm setting up a RHEL 4 VM and have installed Oracle Java 1.6 from a bin file to /opt. I've added it into the PATH but when I try to run a installer that needs Java to run it says that it can't find a Java installation in my PATH but when I execute a which java I get the following:
I have did a clean installation of Debian Jessie today on my laptop and my computer.I use the Gnome 3.14.1 Desktop environment.
I installed Spotify-Client via PPA, and i installed the gconf-editor, gufw and Google Earth. Those 3 applications are not visable in the Gnome applications menu.
If i run then via the terminal, e.g. spotify-client, gconf-editor, gufw and google-earth, the applications are started. They seem to be installed correctly. I tried either running apt-get purge spotify-client gconf-editor google-earth-stable gufw, and reinstalled those applications, to no avail.
I even tried installing another desktop environment, mate-desktop. The shortcuts to the applications do exist in /usr/share/applications. Only not in the Gnome 3 menu. It's strange, because this problem happens both on my desktop and my laptop computer.
I run: Debian Jessie 8.2.0 with Gnome 3.14.1. Kernel 3.16.0-4 amd64 architecture
I also tried reinstalling Gnome-Shell and GDM. But it doesn't work.
Before, Debian Wheezy 7.9 was installed, and there was no problem. My Debian installation is fully up-to-date.
I have Ubuntu Jaunty & Linux Multimedia Studio 0.4.2. In attempt to update to LMMS 0.4.5, I downloaded & attempted to install : lmms_0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty_i386.deb and got the following error message : Error : Dependency is not satisfiable : lmms-common (=0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty). What went wrong and is there an easier way to update ? Also, should I remove the older version or just install the latest on top of it ?
I was installing last night some applications , then i forgot to plugin my laptop so suddenly it turned off , anyways today i turned it on , while booting it gave me this error : "error where found when mounting the disk file /"so i press I to ignore , and it works , but now how can i fix this error?
I am having a problem installing SLES11 on a new server. It goes fine through the setup until it gets to GRUB, it gets me the following error message: Error occurred while installing GRUB
Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.
I was customizing my desktop and I decided I wanted to try out a dock so I installed docky, cairo dock, and awn via ubuntu tweak. Fortunately for me, docky decided it wanted to boot at startup. When this happened, my applications panel bar appeared right in the middle of the screen. So I uninstalled docky through ubuntu tweak and it seemed to resolve the problem. Unfortunately for me, I kept trying out the other docks. Opening cairo dock brought about the same problem for the applications panel bar. Something that should be noted is that I do not expand my panel bar. This problem doesn't happen if the panel bar is expanded.I've uninstalled AWN and Cairo Dock via ubuntu tweak but the problem remains.
After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10 Win7 wouldn't startup any more. So I tried this HowTo: to restore Grub2. But now each time I boot up I get this two lines: error file not found grub rescue> I have NO idea what to do.
I have a long running 9.10 installation. All of a sudden, on boot, I get this error: "loading initial ramdisk error: file not found" If I hit 'E' at the menu entry, I can scroll all the way to the end of the boot command, and it appears that the last 'c' on 'generic' is missing from the kernel name. If I add the c and hit ctrl-x it boots fine. The grub.cfg appears to be correct, it has the full generic spelled out.
i have been using a vps computer (for counter-strike servers) for about 4 months now, i need to install phpmyadmin + mysql + appache2. i am running debian 5.0 btw, and everything is being done through putty, and winscp (i googled on how to reinstall php and mysql and saw a program called yum. but i have'nt tried to use it) first off, i tried to update
...
i did'nt know what to type, so i exited out of putty, and rentered.
later i found the command for phpadmin, installed it. entered the password for mysql. and everything. looked like it was installed ok, then i tried to go to phpadmin. i typed in internet brower (http)://82.135.231.14/phpmyadmin and it wants to send me a file. now on my last vps, i had mysql and phpadmin and it worked fine. never got this error. why is it? and how can i fix it? should i reinstall it? btw, i need it for a thing called "amxbans" and a text message system (you send a text, and you will be a admin) i think thats all i need to install.
I just installed Ubuntu. I like it so far. After installing like 10 apps, I started getting this error: Quote: An unhandlable error occured There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks. Please report this error at www...
I am running Xubuntu on a MacBook Pro with fluxbox as my window manager. Yesterday when I attempted to launch firefox I received a bus error and the application did not launch. I corrected the problem by removing and reinstalling firefox. Today the same problem is happening with emacs. I have not tried removing and reinstalling emacs so I am not sure if that will work but since the problem has occurred in more than one application now, I assume it points to a larger issue. I have done some research on bus errors but it isn't clear why this problem would manifest in different applications in this manner. After the a failed launch the dmesg reports this, which seems relevant:
Sometimes my screen-saver crashes, showing a blank screen with "render error detected ..." message. This message is displayed only short time <1s, then login screen appears.Due to short time, I'm not able to read the complete error message on screen. Is there a way to delay the displaying of such errors so I can read it properly? In the /var/log/messages I have found the following: Code: Jul 9 09:22:33 dc7100 kernel: render error detected, EIR:
I was trying to install a newer version of Firefox and thought I would just try to install the newer RPM for Fedora without doing anything else and this dialog message appeared. Could not do simulate: Can't install /home/kbs/Downloads/firefox-3.6.4-0.4.build6.fc13.remi.i586.rpm as no transaction
just installed a fresh copy of fedora 12 and getting this error when trying to update the system.

Similarly, if I click on System>Add/Remove Software>Package Collections, I get No groups could be found. A cache refresh should fix this. I don't see how to do a cache refresh. I tried rpm --rebuilddb, which didn't do any good and um clean all which also did no good. I did manage to do the updates with yum updates But I don't want to have to use yum at the command line all the time to do updates.
I'm trying to install 10.04, but have hit a few bumps. The first time I tried to boot the live cd, the monitor frequency would go out of range. I fixed this by deleting the
Code: ro quiet splash from the end of the boot line, and replacing it with Code: ro vga=773 nomodeset
After booting with this modification to the kernel line, rather than booting into the live cd desktop, it takes me to a command setting. To try and get things moving I type

I have a problem with "places" in the panel. Error file not found comes up on all top 7 in list from Home folder to downloads. I can get to my files by going via computer, and to file system. How do i restore, so these items in Places work again ?
I just ran apt update in terminal and got the usual listing of packages, but at the end I got the following: W: GPG error: The Opera .deb Repository stable Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY F9A2F76A9D1A0061 Anyone have a fix for this? I was once able to use the following, but I'm now using Mint-8, not the OS I was using before. This is what once worked for me: type:

I just wanted to checkout samba. So, I installed on a CentOS 5.5 64bit server. The version I used is 3.5.6. I followed this guide. . LDAP is working good. When I use the following command: (net groupmap list) I am getting the error.

well i suppose this makes the problem ever more complex because i'm acutally attempting to make a cross compile tool chain from amd64 to arm.i've successfully built binutils and configured the kernel headers. now i'm stuck on gcci'm running Code: sudo make -j 4 when i get the issue (the -j 4 if you don't know helps speed up the process considerably by using more threads)
anyways it tells me: Code: make[2]: Entering directory `/home/alex/tmp/gcc-4.4.5/arm-linux/libgcc' Makefile:143: ../.././gcc/libgcc.mvars: No such file or directory make[2]: *** No rule to make target `../.././gcc/libgcc.mvars'. Stop.
About 1 week ago, one of my PC's Hard Drives had stopped working. Because of that, I replaced the HD with a 2-set of Hard Disks from a earlier PC (whose Pentium 4 CPU failed). Because of a failed attempt in dual-booting with M$ WINDOW$, the MBR and Linux are separated between the hard drives. The computer booted up fine on first try (and even got into KDE), but it's internet didn't work (didn't even show eth0 on ifconfig). I decided to install some software via my old 8.04 LiveCD (I can't afford to format that PC for I have critical data on it, 0 DVDs, and no Flash drive), mounting it then chrooting it remembering to mount dev/pts sys and proc. Because the system was something old (Debian Squeeze from ~1 month ago), It had a kernel and GRUB upgrades which I missed among the ~600 others. Naturally, it failed to upgrade because of the missing /dev. Finally, I restarted my computer hoping for a upgraded PC with the programs. However, I instead got this:
Code: | Sec. Slave Disk : LBA,SATA, 160GB -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
