Ubuntu Servers :: PHP Mail() Not Working - How To Make It Work
Feb 9, 2010I am using ubuntu since Intrepid Ibex. Since then I have learnt a lot and just recently setup my own home/web server. I am running my LAMP server on Karmic. I have been slowly transferring my website from my current hosting company to my server. Got everything working except the PHP mail() function is not working. I do not get any error messages but the mail does not reach. /etc/log/mail.log is blank.
I basically clueless about where to start. I did not install a mail server. Is this the reason? Should I check something in phpinfo() or the php.conf? I do not have sendmail/postfix installed.

May 5, 2010I installed Kubuntu 10.04 and wanted to try if, finally, ibus works. I installed ibus and ibus-anthy from repository (I need the japanese input), then I launched Ibus preferences from the menu, set it, and the icon appears in the kickbar.But nothing happens if I press ctrl-space. Same problem there was on 9.10.I also added the lines to the home/.bashrc as the popup says.

Nov 27, 2010I am slowly rebuilding my network after a HDD crash that took out my primary development box. I installed Lucid Lynx and have things (mostly) working. The issue I am having has to do with file completion and history. I could set filec in my .cshrc file and it would work as it usually does (hit <TAB? key after typing in a couple of letters of a file name and BOOM the file auto-completes). For some reason, when I do the same thing, I get a literal TAB entered on the line. Also, if I attmept to utilize history (either the up-arrow from the keyboard I see ^[ instead of the last executed command(s).

Jan 26, 2011I've installed Lubuntu on a Packard Bell EasyNote W3344 D. lsusb displays the usb pen, however it's not automounted. All three options under pcmanfm --> Preferences -- Volume Managment is ticked. I've tried two different usb pens, both formatted fat32 and confirmed working on ordinary Ubuntu. I should add that I previously installed Mint Fluxbox, but eventually reinstalled (choosing Lubuntu) because I wasn't able to enable auto mount of usb pen. Both /mnt and /media remains empty after insertion of the usb pen. Auto mount of optical drive is working properly.

Ubuntu :: Internal Speakers Stopped Working - How To Make It Work
Apr 26, 2011I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Studio 1749 laptop since I got it, around 8 months ago.I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.10 64-bit, reformatting and partitioning my hard drive in the process (got rid of windows since I never use it) and it was working perfectly until last Wednesday (22.4.2011). On Wednesday I unplugged my usb headset while in a Skype call to switch to the internal speakers and my computer freaked out, black-screened, and froze. When I rebooted, the internal speakers had stopped working completely, even though the sound works perfectly on both sets of headphones I have.
I've tried most of the fixes that have been presented in other threads and none of them are working, including rebooting the laptop with the headset in. I've tried that with both of my usb headsets, even though I don�t like using the one that it froze on for the exact reason that any time I have audio playing with that headset and it gets unplugged, it black-screens and freezes my laptop. Actually audio doesn�t even have to be playing, sometimes unplugging it even with nothing playing still freezes my laptop. It does it once in a while with my other usb headset, as well, but not every time or anything close to that often.One thread suggested that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by appending the following line to the file would work:

But that did nothing at all. Someone else said that they saved a copy of alsa-base.conf and replaced the whole thing with that line, so I did that, with no change. Then I purged alsamixer using

and

Then I rebooted, and reinstalled them, which did not fix the issue. However, it did replace the alsa-base.conf file that I modified which shows me that it actually did purge it. (I was an idiot the first time I tried to purge it and only purged and reinstalled alsa-utils..xD So the file did not get replaced, which was when I realised my mistake) I have NOT modified the new file, although I did copy the contents to a text file in case I need to try that fix again.I should also mention that the speakers do work when first booting up Ubuntu to the log-in screen, both with and without headphones I ran the alsamixer diagnostic at the beginning of all this, here's the link: [URL] And then ran it again after purging and reinstalling alsamixer, here's the new link: [URL] I have tried messing with the settings, disabling the headset, setting the input and output manually to internal speakers while the headset is still plugged in, making sure with GNOME alsa-mixer that the speakers are not muted, rebooting with the headsets in and then unplugging them.

Mar 10, 2011There seems to be something that has changed in the newest stable Debian - I chose kde4 as my default desktop at installation, and it worked fine. Then I went and changed some options in both /var/run/kdm/kdmrc and /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, something I have done many times before without problems.
However, when I tried to restart kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm, things didn't come up - no X, no kdm. When I rebooted the machine everything seemed fine, so I thought the problem was solved; but this morning I wanted to change something else - I don't want kdm to remember the last user, and I don't want to see a list of users either. Now dkm and X fail even when I reboot; I also find that /var/run/kdm/kdmrc has disappeared - I am certain I didn't remove it.
The strange thing, when I try /etc/init.d/kdm, I can kdm hanging around all alone in the process list, but no X or greeter. So what is going on - what should I have done instead? And can I repair it? I can of course reinstall the system, but I hate to think that we can't manage better in Linux.

I think the last time it was working was right before I put the computer into hibernate for the first time. it stopped working even after restarting.modinfo p54usb shows (I'm leaving out information that seems irrelevant because I can't copy and paste without the internet, so I'm typing what I see from another computer)

Jan 27, 2010I cannot right click with my mouse on the gnome applications menu to get the properties/edit menu option. This is on F12 on 64bit.
Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

CentOS 5 Server :: Dovecot/apache Not Working Properly - How To Make It Work Correctly
Mar 20, 2010I am running a quad core centos 5.4 box that is having a strange problem with dovecot. The administration panel is able to send emails through dovecot but not any of the user accounts (ie with webmail). I've done a bit of research with what could be wrong but haven't had any luck so far I am also having a weird problem with apache: on a c++/php bittorrent application I was going to be running on a subdomain of my main site I get a 500 error every time I try to log in. The only way to get rid of the 500 error is to clear the chache (so its horribly broken somehow). The error generated in the log whenever I try to log in is that "ffmpeg is already loaded" (which I am running on the main site and is critical). Is there a way of either repairing my apache install or excluding ffmpeg on the subdomain in the conf or something?

What I tried to make it work so far:
1. Install sound fonts: unison.sf2 and FluidR3_GS.sf2
2. Use asfxload to load these soundfonts.

When playing a Video my CPU goes to 100 so I guess the hardware acceleration does not work..

Feb 13, 2011I have the nvidia sound card built into my motherboard. Just a few hours ago it started to just stop making any noises what so ever. I rebooted but to no avail. I finally was able to find a fix by purging pulse AND alsa, then reinstalling them and rebooting. The problem is this will only allow my sound to work for about 10-15 mins. Kinda hard to watch "'Neath the Arizona Sky" if you gotta reboot every 15 minutes or so...
I have also purge and reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and that will work temporarily and extend me out another 10-15 mins from when it stopped, but then I still have to reboot.
I am using 10.10 Maverick 64 bit and have been using it for a while, this is the first time this or any other problem has occured.
I have been through the forums and checked every thread I could find with a Bingle search that was in any way related to random sound stoppage. I have tried most of them (did not try the ones that were specific to other cards as far as editing the .conf's for those cards)

Jul 12, 2010Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, playing videos with the default player do not work properly. I only see the content while moving the window, or in full screen mode, and in both ways, the picture is distorsioned and with strange colors. Playing it with VLC does work properly ONLY IF I change the video output module to something different as default (X11 works, openGL also) but Linux Framebuffer does not.
The question: Is there a way to change the "default" video mode that Totem (or Kaffeine) use?? I have not found anything on the net with this exact problem.

Apr 18, 2010Every time I log in, I get the following notification from Phonon: The audio playback device does not work. Falling back to RV635 Audio device [Radeon HD 3600 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI) and of course, I get no sound.
Sound is integrated Intel HD "82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller" (courtesy of lshw), and it did work before, it just seems to have appeared suddenly out of nowhere, I can't even tell when and whether it's connected to any updates or other configuration changes.

Jun 6, 2010I have a Zotac IONITX-F-E motherboard (Intel Atom Dual Core 1.6 GHz + Nvidia ION) -based box with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit installed. Do you or does someone you know have the same setup as I do? If so, do they have 1080p video playback working? If so, what driver are they using? I've tried following every guide I could find, but no luck so far. I have libvdpau1 and libvdpau-dev installed. I have the nvidia 195.36.24 driver installed (I used the nvidia installer). I have mplayer installed (which I compiled from source with --enable-vdpau).
I try to run mplayer with this command:

I get the following message in my terminal:

I have libvdpau-dev and libvdpau1 installed.
After Googling this problem, I found a post that suggested the following steps:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-195 nvidia-195-modaliases
It turns out that I had already added the nvidia-vdpau repository. However, despite that, I get:

The same problem exists for the nvidia-195-modaliases package. Do these packages exist? Is there some other way to get them?

Jul 29, 2010I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
