Ubuntu :: Auto Mount Not Working - How To Make It Work

Jan 26, 2011

I've installed Lubuntu on a Packard Bell EasyNote W3344 D. lsusb displays the usb pen, however it's not automounted. All three options under pcmanfm --> Preferences -- Volume Managment is ticked. I've tried two different usb pens, both formatted fat32 and confirmed working on ordinary Ubuntu. I should add that I previously installed Mint Fluxbox, but eventually reinstalled (choosing Lubuntu) because I wasn't able to enable auto mount of usb pen. Both /mnt and /media remains empty after insertion of the usb pen. Auto mount of optical drive is working properly.

General :: Auto Mount Not Working With New HD's

Sep 8, 2010

I'm using Red Hat in a work environment as the system that runs my Netbackup. My predecessor was using 1Tb Western Digital external HD's and they worked great but now were upgrading to 2Tb drives and I have to format them and make sure then work correctly.

I have been able to format them in Red Hat and they have worked with Netbackup however the only way I can get them mounted is by having them plugged in and then restarting the whole system. The older drives are completely plug and play.

Here are the steps that I have been following;

Then I set the file system type with;

Next I create the new filesystem on the drive with the command;

Then I finalize the format with;

Followed by a restart, which of course the drive comes up. But if I unmount the drive and remove it and then plug it back in nothing comes up. Trying to manually mount it doesn't come up with anything. I have attempted this with 3 different brand new Western Digital external HD's.

I've looked in the fstab and when I plug in the old hd's it comes up with the command to mount it. With the new one's its not there unless I do the complete system restart.

Ubuntu Networking :: Auto Mount Of USB Drive Not Working Via Ssh?

Nov 13, 2010

I have this ubuntu machine that lives under my desk and is basically a utility machine. Mainly I ssh to it and get synchronize/backup files, etc.

When I reboot, for some reason the auto mount for my usb drives doesn't work until I actually hook up the monitor and log in to the gui. When I ssh in after reboot, I'm unable to access my USB drives! "Not Authorized"

I'm not sure how to mount a drive from the command line... really I just want the machine to auto mount the drives when it starts up... gui login or no.

Slackware :: Auto Mount Is No Longer Working On -current?

Mar 5, 2011

I stuck a flash drive into a usb port this morning, and the device notifier failed to show. I opened Dolphin, and I noticed that nothing that should be mounted was showing up in the left pane. I always have seen my Windows install, as well as another partition that has Slackware. I can navigate to /mnt/vista and its all there. I can also go to /mnt/Slackware and its all there. However, the flash drive does not show.I can manually mount the drive and all is well as root. I can't even tell you when this started. I am using Alien's 4.6 KDE packages with all the deps. I just opened mc and checked everything. HAL is disabled and has been for a long time. All did work after disabling HAL.Its not just the flash drive, it effects anything - music cds, blank media, nothing works automagically. Google hasn't

Fedora Networking :: Auto-mount With Samba - Isn't Working During Startup ?

Jul 24, 2011

I have edited my /etc/fstab file in order to have it automatically mount a windows network share at startup.

The problem is, that it isn't really working during startup. After I log in, in order to make it mount I have to open the terminal and enter "mount -a".

The following is my fstab file:

Code:

I suspect this has something to do with my laptop not having made a network connection when the entries are mounted, but I'm not sure. How would I go about finding out about any errors?

Networking :: Ethernet Auto-connect / Auto-sense Doesn't Work

Feb 3, 2011

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.

Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

Ubuntu Servers :: PHP Mail() Not Working - How To Make It Work

Feb 9, 2010

I am using ubuntu since Intrepid Ibex. Since then I have learnt a lot and just recently setup my own home/web server. I am running my LAMP server on Karmic. I have been slowly transferring my website from my current hosting company to my server. Got everything working except the PHP mail() function is not working. I do not get any error messages but the mail does not reach. /etc/log/mail.log is blank.

I basically clueless about where to start. I did not install a mail server. Is this the reason? Should I check something in phpinfo() or the php.conf? I do not have sendmail/postfix installed.

Ubuntu :: File Completion Not Working - How To Make It Work

Nov 27, 2010

I am slowly rebuilding my network after a HDD crash that took out my primary development box. I installed Lucid Lynx and have things (mostly) working. The issue I am having has to do with file completion and history. I could set filec in my .cshrc file and it would work as it usually does (hit <TAB? key after typing in a couple of letters of a file name and BOOM the file auto-completes). For some reason, when I do the same thing, I get a literal TAB entered on the line. Also, if I attmept to utilize history (either the up-arrow from the keyboard I see ^[ instead of the last executed command(s).

Ubuntu :: Internal Speakers Stopped Working - How To Make It Work

Apr 26, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Studio 1749 laptop since I got it, around 8 months ago.I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.10 64-bit, reformatting and partitioning my hard drive in the process (got rid of windows since I never use it) and it was working perfectly until last Wednesday (22.4.2011). On Wednesday I unplugged my usb headset while in a Skype call to switch to the internal speakers and my computer freaked out, black-screened, and froze. When I rebooted, the internal speakers had stopped working completely, even though the sound works perfectly on both sets of headphones I have.

I've tried most of the fixes that have been presented in other threads and none of them are working, including rebooting the laptop with the headset in. I've tried that with both of my usb headsets, even though I dont like using the one that it froze on for the exact reason that any time I have audio playing with that headset and it gets unplugged, it black-screens and freezes my laptop. Actually audio doesnt even have to be playing, sometimes unplugging it even with nothing playing still freezes my laptop. It does it once in a while with my other usb headset, as well, but not every time or anything close to that often.One thread suggested that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by appending the following line to the file would work:

Code:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

But that did nothing at all. Someone else said that they saved a copy of alsa-base.conf and replaced the whole thing with that line, so I did that, with no change. Then I purged alsamixer using

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-base

and

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-utils

Then I rebooted, and reinstalled them, which did not fix the issue. However, it did replace the alsa-base.conf file that I modified which shows me that it actually did purge it. (I was an idiot the first time I tried to purge it and only purged and reinstalled alsa-utils..xD So the file did not get replaced, which was when I realised my mistake) I have NOT modified the new file, although I did copy the contents to a text file in case I need to try that fix again.I should also mention that the speakers do work when first booting up Ubuntu to the log-in screen, both with and without headphones I ran the alsamixer diagnostic at the beginning of all this, here's the link: [URL] And then ran it again after purging and reinstalling alsamixer, here's the new link: [URL] I have tried messing with the settings, disabling the headset, setting the input and output manually to internal speakers while the headset is still plugged in, making sure with GNOME alsa-mixer that the speakers are not muted, rebooting with the headsets in and then unplugging them.

Server :: Auto Mount USB Drive To Specified Mount Point After Reboot

Jul 19, 2010

I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

Debian Multimedia :: Kde4: X Stopped Working - How To Make It To Work

Mar 10, 2011

There seems to be something that has changed in the newest stable Debian - I chose kde4 as my default desktop at installation, and it worked fine. Then I went and changed some options in both /var/run/kdm/kdmrc and /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, something I have done many times before without problems.

However, when I tried to restart kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm, things didn't come up - no X, no kdm. When I rebooted the machine everything seemed fine, so I thought the problem was solved; but this morning I wanted to change something else - I don't want kdm to remember the last user, and I don't want to see a list of users either. Now dkm and X fail even when I reboot; I also find that /var/run/kdm/kdmrc has disappeared - I am certain I didn't remove it.

The strange thing, when I try /etc/init.d/kdm, I can kdm hanging around all alone in the process list, but no X or greeter. So what is going on - what should I have done instead? And can I repair it? I can of course reinstall the system, but I hate to think that we can't manage better in Linux.

CentOS 5 Server :: Dovecot/apache Not Working Properly - How To Make It Work Correctly

Mar 20, 2010

I am running a quad core centos 5.4 box that is having a strange problem with dovecot. The administration panel is able to send emails through dovecot but not any of the user accounts (ie with webmail). I've done a bit of research with what could be wrong but haven't had any luck so far I am also having a weird problem with apache: on a c++/php bittorrent application I was going to be running on a subdomain of my main site I get a 500 error every time I try to log in. The only way to get rid of the 500 error is to clear the chache (so its horribly broken somehow). The error generated in the log whenever I try to log in is that "ffmpeg is already loaded" (which I am running on the main site and is critical). Is there a way of either repairing my apache install or excluding ffmpeg on the subdomain in the conf or something?
