Ubuntu :: Internal Speakers Stopped Working - How To Make It Work

Apr 26, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu on my Dell Studio 1749 laptop since I got it, around 8 months ago.I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.10 64-bit, reformatting and partitioning my hard drive in the process (got rid of windows since I never use it) and it was working perfectly until last Wednesday (22.4.2011). On Wednesday I unplugged my usb headset while in a Skype call to switch to the internal speakers and my computer freaked out, black-screened, and froze. When I rebooted, the internal speakers had stopped working completely, even though the sound works perfectly on both sets of headphones I have.

I've tried most of the fixes that have been presented in other threads and none of them are working, including rebooting the laptop with the headset in. I've tried that with both of my usb headsets, even though I dont like using the one that it froze on for the exact reason that any time I have audio playing with that headset and it gets unplugged, it black-screens and freezes my laptop. Actually audio doesnt even have to be playing, sometimes unplugging it even with nothing playing still freezes my laptop. It does it once in a while with my other usb headset, as well, but not every time or anything close to that often. One thread suggested that modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by appending the following line to the file would work:

Code:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6

But that did nothing at all. Someone else said that they saved a copy of alsa-base.conf and replaced the whole thing with that line, so I did that, with no change. Then I purged alsamixer using

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-base

and

Code:

sudo apt-get purge alsa-utils

Then I rebooted, and reinstalled them, which did not fix the issue. However, it did replace the alsa-base.conf file that I modified which shows me that it actually did purge it. (I was an idiot the first time I tried to purge it and only purged and reinstalled alsa-utils..xD So the file did not get replaced, which was when I realised my mistake) I have NOT modified the new file, although I did copy the contents to a text file in case I need to try that fix again.I should also mention that the speakers do work when first booting up Ubuntu to the log-in screen, both with and without headphones I ran the alsamixer diagnostic at the beginning of all this, here's the link: [URL] And then ran it again after purging and reinstalling alsamixer, here's the new link: [URL] I have tried messing with the settings, disabling the headset, setting the input and output manually to internal speakers while the headset is still plugged in, making sure with GNOME alsa-mixer that the speakers are not muted, rebooting with the headsets in and then unplugging them.

Debian Multimedia :: Kde4: X Stopped Working - How To Make It To Work

Mar 10, 2011

There seems to be something that has changed in the newest stable Debian - I chose kde4 as my default desktop at installation, and it worked fine. Then I went and changed some options in both /var/run/kdm/kdmrc and /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, something I have done many times before without problems.

However, when I tried to restart kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm, things didn't come up - no X, no kdm. When I rebooted the machine everything seemed fine, so I thought the problem was solved; but this morning I wanted to change something else - I don't want kdm to remember the last user, and I don't want to see a list of users either. Now dkm and X fail even when I reboot; I also find that /var/run/kdm/kdmrc has disappeared - I am certain I didn't remove it.

The strange thing, when I try /etc/init.d/kdm, I can kdm hanging around all alone in the process list, but no X or greeter. So what is going on - what should I have done instead? And can I repair it? I can of course reinstall the system, but I hate to think that we can't manage better in Linux.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HP Pavilion DV5000 Internal Speakers Not Working?

Mar 20, 2010

yesterday i was on videos, and i had headphones plugged into the headphone socket on my laptop.i unplugged them a few times because they were needed elsewhere, but on the last time i unplugged them, the sound didn't return to the internal speakers. i plugged the headphones back in, and there was sound out of the headphones, but not speakers. i rebooted the laptop, still to find sound only out of the headphones. i then was very bad, and booted into wingdoze, and still sound only out of the headphones.
i've tried doing the muting channels in alsa-mixer as well. muting didn't work. i've also tried cleaning the headphone socket with ispopropyl alcohol too. and removing the bios battery and battery and ac adaptor... just incase it will do a reset of some description. no. still nothing.

[code]...

edit: the "mute" media button light appears to be lit, however pressing it only feeds a software into the computer, and doesn't turn the light off. i'll try playing around a bit more. edit: i just discovered that if you hold down the m key on alsamixer to mute/unmute the "external amplifier" channel, the light flashes! this is beginning to look promising. edit: if i unmute the external amplifier before i log out, it stays unmuted until i log back in again. what can i do to stop it from muting as soon as i log back in again?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Speakers Stopped Working In 9.10 On A Dell Studio Xps 16?

Strange thing is that the headphone jacks still work just fine. Used to be that unplugging the headphones would cause the sound to come out of the laptop speakers, but now sound never does. I'm wondering if the software that controls the routing of sound between the speakers and the headphone jacks is messed up?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Speakers Stopped Working - Sound Not Functional

Sep 5, 2010

I've suddenly developed "no sound" at all- I use Logitech USB speakers and have been doing fine until this weekend when they simply won't play any longer. I searched and followed a bunch of different troubleshooting to no avail. I am running 9.10 with all the latest updates. I ran apt-get update and upgraded following this to be sure while doing this troubleshooting.

I went ahead and ran the also information script and the output is here: [URL]

The speaker lights are on so there is power getting there. I re-set the sound preferences to use the usb as output device and cranked the volume up all the way. This preference does not seem to stay between reboots or even when checking while troubleshooting this problem.

SUSE :: Lenovo G560: Internal Microphone Stopped Working?

Sep 30, 2010

I've got a handy new Lenovo G560 running with OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit. After a normal out-of-the-box installation the laptop speakers failed to mute when I plugged in headphones and I was only able to regulate the sound for both the speakers and the headphones simultaneously. Then I installed a whole lot of ALSA stuff and my sound devices were recognized as "PulseAudio server (local)". Speakers muted when I plugged in headphones - a big yay.

Now, though, my microphone doesn't work any more. It worked before, I'd talked on Skype with it, but upon trying to make a call with Skype today I noticed that it didn't work any more. Sound's turned up in KMix, so everything should be okay - does anybody know how to get my microphone working again?

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache2 Vhost Stopped Working After Changing Routers Internal Ip

Apr 8, 2011

I run ubuntu 10.10 with apache2 and have 2 virtual hosts set up

here is an example of one of the virtual hosts

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName blah.endofinternet.org
ServerAlias blah.endofinternet.org
ServerAdmin davidboychuck@gmail.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/blah

[Code]....

Everything was working perfectly until i changed the internal ip of my router from 192.168.1 to 192.168.192 and now virtual hosting no longer works. As far as I can tell everything is setup correctly. I made no changes to the configuration files. Vhosts just literally stopped working. I've tried clearing dns cache not sure what to do at this point. I have tried to a2dissite and then a2ensite and reload the configurations but it literally just seems like apache is not looking for the vhosts in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled even though my apache2.conf still includes them

#Include the virtual host configurations:
Include sites-enabled/
From the apache error log:
[Sun Apr 03 16:41:50 2011] [error] [client 66.249.72.208] script '/var/www/index.php' not found or unable to stat

[Code].....

It looks like it's just not trying to use the vhost document root because when i go to blah.endofinternet.org it just takes me to the default site.

Hardware :: Internal Speakers Don't Mute On FSC Amilo Pro / Resolve This?

Feb 3, 2010

I'm using Linux Mint 8, kernel 2.6.31-12 (and I tried several other distributions and had the exact same problem) on my FSC Amilo Pro 3525, where I have Intel HDA (ICH7) and Realtek 883. My problem is that when I plug in my external speakers, they do not mute the internal ones.

I've searched and searched the forums and came up with a half-baked solution where in alsamixer I - almost - mute front, and bring master to maximum, and in that way I hear the internal speakers just a little.. and the external ones play at maybe 1/3 of their normal volume. Every time I reboot I have to do this again. I can't mute front entirely because then it mutes all sound.

I tried adding various options to alsa-conf, which seems to be a fairly often suggested solution, including the one where I identify the model of my notebook, and it did not help.

Now. When I tried to find the answer, I came across several tutorials that suggested adjusting options in volume control, etc, inlcuding jacksense, that I found I don't have listed.

Being pretty ignorant about Linux, I came to the conclusion that it might be Pulseaudio that's causing the problem. For instance, alsamixergui shows Pulseaudio as card. I did try preventing Pulseaudio from loading, did not help.

My specs are.
Lenovo Ideapad s205
Amd Fusion e-350
Crunchbang Statler openbox

2.6.32-5-amd64

I would be okay with completely disabling the internal laptop speakers if that is the easiest solution.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Manually Unmuting Internal Speakers When Headphones Are Connected?

Feb 14, 2011

I was wondering whether there is a comfortable small program that lets me manually switch on/off both my internal lapotop speakers as well as external speakers (connected via headphone jack), and control their respective volumes.I had this problem of the headphone jack not muting my internal speakers (solved), which had me realize it would be nice to be able to manually control that, enabling me to use it as a kind of surround.

I'm rather new to Ubuntu (using 10.04.1), but if there's an easy way to control this via terminal, I'd be, of course, very interested in that as well.
