Ubuntu :: Apt-get Deleting All Kernels Instead Of One
Sep 4, 2010I have an issue with apt-get that has been bugging me, namely that it tries to delete kernels I did not specify for deletion.
This is an issue that has been present over at least the last three releases and is present for both 32bit and 64bit, so it might actually be a feature and not a bug, however I can't see it's usefulness.
When I use the command:

sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.32-21*
It not only tries to remove the kernel 2.6.32.21 but gives me the following output:

When I go through with this command to remove the oldest kernel on the system, it will actually delete all kernels present on my PC (as I painfully learned when I first tried it). Why is that the case? Wouldn't it make more sense to only remove the kernel 2.6.32.22?

Feb 12, 2010the method for freeing up space by deleting old kernels is made to sound very simple: go into Synaptic, select the outdated kernels, mark for complete removal, and Apply. Easy. But . . . when I mark a particular kernel for removal, Synaptic also wants to remove a lot of other things, some of which do not bear version numbers and seem generic. I am, to put it mildly, very leery of just telling it to go ahead, lest I end up losing things I should have kept and having a dead or at least crippled box.
Say, for example, that I mark for Complete Removal the line linux-image-2.6.22-15-generic; when I go to Apply that one deletion, I get a laundry list of to-die files that includes:
linux-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-restricted-modules-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-27-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-27-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-15-generic

Ubuntu Servers :: Deleting From / Boot After Removing Kernels
Jul 25, 2011I received an alarm on a server stating that the /boot partition was 90% used. The partition contains several old kernels so I removed all but the current and previous 2 known stable versions using apt. This did not purge the files from the /boot partition.The /boot partition still contains the kernel files for 12 old versions. Is it safe to delete these files after the kernel has been removed using apt? Below is the output of the /boot partition.

Aug 5, 2010I've been using Ubuntu for about 5 years now. I just installed it on one of my neighbors computers.I tried deleting an applet from the top menu bar and the entire menu bar disappeared. I click on the add new menu bar and it just throws something up on the side. I'm using 10.04. I never had this problem before.

However at start up Grub loads only 2.6.31-19 and below and there's no mentioning of 2.6.32 in grub.cfg while it is present in menu.lst. I tried to update grub with no success.

Apr 16, 2011I have GRUB to allow me to boot windows and Ubuntu, i recently noticed that my list of kernels is getting clogged up with all the updates. So i went online to try and find out how to get rid of the unwanted partitions and also how to add new ones - i am going to attempt to hackintosh, and will need to know how to add kernels. What i found out was; the boot menu in GRUB had a file that is supposed to be called 'menu.lst' (Lst not ist), and that all i needed to do was edit this, that it wouldn't delete the kernels, but that i don't need to, i only need to add and remove links to kernels on the GRUB menu. The problem is that after looking, i don't have that menu.lst file, i have a file containing the image files for 'memtest', but not for my GRUB. I am using 10.04, i don't know what version of GRUB im using but i'm using whichever one comes with 10.04. Could someone please point me in the direction of the files i need to edit or what i need to do to add and remove kernels?

Jan 2, 2010I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 and a day later updated with all the suggested security and recommended updates. Now I notice that in my Grub there are two different kernel versions listed. Are they both necessary? Can I / should I get rid of the older one, and if so, how?
I ask because after all these updates I notice my computer runs much slower, so I don't want it overloaded with unnecessary software.

I shouldn't mess with the filesystem but I did and now I have to install Edubuntu from the beginning, but I must be sure that everything will just like I have done no change, so I am afraid that I can make some mistakes at this pointThe first thing that I want to know is: Why there are multiple kernels listed at the GRUB (v 1.5)...this is the full list:

Ubuntu :: Grub Finds No Kernels / Only Memtest
Jul 31, 2011I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.

Nov 25, 2010I followed the Grub 2 Basics steps to remove Grub 2 kernel listings.
However I'm stuck with 3 older versions that was completely_removed from Synaptic (kernel/headers/generic), but remain in grub.cfg.

May 3, 2011I have this strange problem on ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, that when running update-grub, it will only put the oldest kernel into the grub menu, despite the fact that I have recent kernels around as well.

Fedora ::automatically Add New Kernels To Grub ?
Feb 17, 2010I'm sure there is a thread on this somewhere, but after looking though the first 100+ search results, I can't seem to find it.
After a kernel update today, I noticed that new kernels are not being added to my grub menu.lst (so consequently, I was running an older kernel).
Any obvious reason why this would happen (kernels being installed normally, with yum update)? I thought the whole process was supposed to be automagic.
Would it have anything to do with the fact that I just kept my F11 menu.lst, and added a F12 kernel to it when I installed F12 (to a separate partition), then eventually (today, finally) removed the f11 kernels from it?

May 25, 2010I upgraded to 2.6.33 and my comp will only run in Low graphics mode so i scroll down one level back to 2.6.32-22 and all is fine.How can i 'erase' the 2.6.33 line (and the associated recovery line)from the grub list so i dont have to deal with it till bugs are removed later on.My Grub header says it is version 1.98-1ubuntu6

May 3, 2010I run 3 OS's: Win vista, win 7, and ubuntu. Every month I reinstall windows 7 (because I dont have a key), and everytime I do that it reinstalls the MBR. After that, I cant access ubuntu. I have used live cd's to try and reinstall grub with no sucess.What is the easiest way to achieve this? I was hoping I could make a CD to pop in my computer that could reinstall grub as it should be, or atleast boot me into ubuntu, and work from there. But even if I get into ubuntu, I dont know the commands to reinstall grub with autodetect of the other OS's.

Yesterday I made a mistake and formated the ubuntu partition as ntfs with a windows media because I needed to do a test in that partition. Now, off course, when I boot the computer is not finding GRUB and naturally not booting to windows.
I tried to boot with ubuntu live cd and did the apt-get install ms-sys but it just does not find the package. I can browse the windows files and all of that.

Oct 16, 2010I have a major problem with Windows 7's MBR. I deleted Ubuntu's partition last night, and when I restarted, I saw:

I looked it up, put some code into a LiveCD terminal, and I thought it worked. But now, I says that I definitely need to put in a Windows 7 CD and do that MBR fix method. I did not own a Windows 7 CD; my laptop came with it pre-installed, and I have no recovery partition anymore.

Sep 2, 2010I dont quite know what ive done, but after ive reinstalled my ubuntu 10.04, my grub boot menu seems to have dissapeared. my computer will still boot after a while but with no sign of the grub menu. The problem is, that when it boots it sets of the warning buzzer on my laptop (as if it cant find anything boot) this goes on for about 10 seconds before it finally gets round to booting. is there anyway i can restore my grub boot menu?

Jun 18, 2010I have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.

Sep 30, 2010Windows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again.Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.
