Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)

Dec 20, 2010

I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.

No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts, experiences, similar issues - whatever?

Debian :: GRUB Menu Disappeared After Booting Windows 8.1

May 17, 2015

Recently I installed Debuan "jessie". I previously had Windows 8.1 and Xubuntu installed. After installation Debian installed it's own version of GRUB, with entries for Debian, Xubuntu and Windows. The problem is that after I selected Windows when booting, GRUB menu no longer appears. It boots straight into Windows.

It's lenovo Ideapad z510 laptop, with special button that allows me to select between 4 options before booting - one of them is "Boot menu".

I didn't use it before windows "removed" GRUB, but now there are 2 options: Windows boot loader and Ubuntu. When I select Ubuntu it loads my old boot menu (from before installing Debian).

I thought that when I use update-grub from Xubuntu I will at least eb able to boot into debian. After I did that Debian option appeared in the GRUB menu, but it didn't work - black screen.

How to get GRUB menu working again (and avoid replacing it by windows boot loader)?

Ubuntu :: GRUB - Booting Windows Vista From 11.04

Jun 8, 2011

I have to test Ubuntu 11.04 across multiple systems in my company and enable dual booting with Windows Vista PE x86. On selecting the Windows GRUB entry, the Grub menu just loads again without loading Vista and thus enters into an infinite loop.

Fdisk -l gives me:

Code:

When I did a update-grub, the output shows that it detected and added a Windows Vista OS. Also, I went ahead and added "MyWindows" as an option as well which has (worked for all other versions)

Code:

Selecting either of the GRUB Windows entries just loads GRUB menu again. I'm very confused and this deployment is critical for my company.

Ubuntu :: Grub Menu - No Windows Vista Option

Oct 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu onto a separate partition I have. Now however when i boot up, Grub (v1.98 ) gives m 5 options.

Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery)
Memory Test (memtest86+)
Memory Test (memtest86+, serial console)
Windows Recovery Environment (loader)
With no Vista option.

When I run the recovery environment however, it runs just my regular vista boot would have. Is this just a name issue? Ideally I would like to have my Vista option back.

General :: Add Windows Vista To The Grub Menu?

Aug 16, 2011

I had Windows Vista installed on my computer and created a partition to install Fedora 15. I chose the option to install fedora on any free space, so it should have installed on the empty partition. When I boot up, there are two boot options. Fedora and Other. When I select other, it gives an error:BOOTMGR not found. Is there a way to add Windows Vista to the Grub Bootloader by editing the grub menu. I don't know if it will help, but here is what I get when I run fdisk in the terminal:

Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

Fedora Installation :: Boot Windows Vista From F14 Grub

Jul 2, 2011

I'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem. Grub Rescue> - No Longer Have The Install Disk For Windows Vista

May 11, 2011

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.

Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.

I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

Ubuntu :: Grub Displays "Windows Vista (Loader)" Which Didn't Install

Mar 4, 2011

On my notebook there was a preinstalled OEM Windows 7 Home Basic (disk C, sda1). I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on disk D, and was not using Windows 7 any more, although the "seventh" was present n main loading menu and in grub menu. 2 days ago I discovered, that in grub menu appeared "Windows Vista (Loader) - sda1" ! I didn't install it, and I'm sure that nobody else had access to my notebook. "Windows 7 (Loader)" now links to sda2.

When I try to run this strange "Windows Vista (Loader)", appears the Windows loading screen, than the empty Windows desktop background, and than the system reboots. How can Windows Vista (Loader) appear in grub, if nobody installed it? Can it be an imitation of Vista loader, made by some malware? How to remove this item from grub?

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.

Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

CentOS 5 :: Grub And Dual Boot - Reconnected HDD1 But XP Is Disappeared

Aug 5, 2010

1 I have XP installed on HDD1 (SATA 200 Gb master). Now I installed Cetos 5.5 (use 4.1 Gb DVD1) on the second drive, HDD2 (Seagate STA 40 Gb slave.) I didnt fund the option for selecting boot location during installation, just selected second drive. I think this is my first mistaking. The Centos cant boot up after initial installation. I disconnected the HDD1 (XP drive.) Then finished Centos install. Second mistaking.

2 After that Sentos installed, I reconnected HDD1 but XP is disappeared. The grub.cfg shows about XP as:
Title other
Rootnoverity (hd1,0)
Chainloader +1

3 For finding XP I disconnected HDD2 (Sentos), but XP cant be started. This message is shown up:

Just wait 5 seconds for normal startup! Boot: could not find kernel image:vmlinuz

4 I think that stuff was written by grub. I decided to get rid of them then reinstall all. I tried to deleted and create new partition, format c:, fixmbr, and fixboot, then install XP on c:. But above message still shows up when boot machine. I have to use XP install cd to start Windows XP.
