I had dual boot Win Xp and CentOs Linux. I have small harddisk and needed more space, so I removed CentOS linux with partition manager and rebooted. Now I can not boot my XP. All I can see is GRUB prompt. Keyboard do not respond except CTRL ALT DEL. I know I have to fixmbr. But I can not boot from my bootable XP CD. I can boot from CentOS linux DVD and enter into linux rescue mode. From that I typed "grub" entered into grub. Then I tried
I installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.
Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?
I have 3 hard drives and have Ubuntu installed on one (sdb), had windows vista installed in the other (sda) and use the other (sdc) as a back up/extra space. I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.
I am having a problem during a fresh install of CentOS 5.3 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro 6221. I have tested the installation media (CDs). The install runs normally until I am asked to specify the appropriate keyboard.I take the default (English) and hit next. The keyboard and mouse keys become unresponsive though the mouse pointer moves. I can go no further than this. This behavior is the same whether I install in text mode or graphic mode. I have tried the noprobe installation option without success. The box I am doing the install on dual boots fine between Windows XP and CentOS 4.7 currently.Does anyone have an idea of what the problem may be?
I have some pending upgrades, one of which includes kernel 2.6.32-22 but whenever the upgrade gets to running the update-grub command, it gets stuck on "Found memtest86+..." Here's the actual output...
[Code].....
It's been hanging like this for hours today, preventing me from getting any of the pending upgrades. I've cancelled it several times, deleted the dpkg lock files and tried it again only to have it hang all over again.
Bit new to linux but what i saw with gloria in my opinion was a better os than windows. Just done a fresh install with helena on my sata drive and a dual boot with xp pro which is on my on my ide drive my problem is on boot I get to grub loading then boot hangs for 5 minutes before the dual boot screen appears and when it does I can not move up or down to select any options eventually however helena does start.
I upgraded to 2.6.33 and my comp will only run in Low graphics mode so i scroll down one level back to 2.6.32-22 and all is fine. How can i 'erase' the 2.6.33 line (and the associated recovery line)from the grub list so i dont have to deal with it till bugs are removed later on.My Grub header says it is version 1.98-1ubuntu6
I have a dual boot system which I made from scratch Win7 and then Ubuntu 11.04.After installation all worked fine but each time I have to run Win7starting it from Grub2)when I shut it down and restart the laptop, grub2 is not there anymore and Win7 starts with its bootloader. To get back to Natty I have to go through the Live CD and install Grub + Boot Repair and run it.'m lost. I attach the boot info results.
I've got a server running CentOS 5.5. I used the automated iptables config tool included in the operating system to allow traffic for vsftpd, Apache and UnrealIRCd. When I send large files to FTP, even from the local network, it works fine for a while and then completely times out... on everything. IRC disconnects, FTP can't find it and when I try to ping it I get "Reply from 10.1.10.134: Destination host unreachable" where ..134 is the host address for the Win7 box I'm pinging from. This is especially frustrating as it's a headless server, and as I can't SSH into it to reboot I'm forced to resort to the reset switch on the front, which I really don't like doing.
Edit: the timeouts are global, across all machines both on the local network and users connecting in from outside.
1st of all, I use my centos mainly as a desktop PC. It started about a few weeks ago when i did a yum update and there was a huge number of files to update. I think it was since then (really not sure) that my gnome panel kept crashing. There was a bug report text but no bug number. Changing new user profile, gnome panel hung as well. I run 3 OS's: Win vista, win 7, and ubuntu. Every month I reinstall windows 7 (because I dont have a key), and everytime I do that it reinstalls the MBR. After that, I cant access ubuntu. I have used live cd's to try and reinstall grub with no sucess. What is the easiest way to achieve this? I was hoping I could make a CD to pop in my computer that could reinstall grub as it should be, or atleast boot me into ubuntu, and work from there. But even if I get into ubuntu, I dont know the commands to reinstall grub with autodetect of the other OS's.
Windows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again. Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.
I have my laptop NC6910p from HP with windows 7 and Ubuntu lucid as dual boot managed by grub loader.
Yesterday I made a mistake and formated the ubuntu partition as ntfs with a windows media because I needed to do a test in that partition. Now, off course, when I boot the computer is not finding GRUB and naturally not booting to windows.
I tried to boot with ubuntu live cd and did the apt-get install ms-sys but it just does not find the package. I can browse the windows files and all of that.
I have a major problem with Windows 7's MBR. I deleted Ubuntu's partition last night, and when I restarted, I saw: Code: error: no such partition grub rescue> I looked it up, put some code into a LiveCD terminal, and I thought it worked. But now, I says that I definitely need to put in a Windows 7 CD and do that MBR fix method. I did not own a Windows 7 CD; my laptop came with it pre-installed, and I have no recovery partition anymore.
I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input.
Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either)
I have checked my server-status. It all looked ok, but I have a suspicion I was hitting my ServerLimit, so I doubled that. Also enabled my Keepalives. Will keep an eye on it.
Some additional info;
1. Apache is throwing seg faults, but enabling core dumps does not produce them.
2. I have tried disabling the modules in apache but it just stops things from working.
3. I fear it may actually be DNS related. If I watch Live Headers in Firefox, absolutely nothing happens during this 'hanging' period. After that, the responses come back fairly promptly.
I have recently upgraded to a VPS for the purpose of web hosting a group of sites related to my business. The reason for the upgrade was because we wish to run a shopping cart software which required greater memory for PHP and the VPS was the most economic solution. So, I have very basic linux knowledge but I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to going further than just scratching the surface of server configuration! I have successfully hosted our main site for a number of weeks but recently the postfix service stopped sending mail. I have Plesk Control Panel installed and postfix continually shows as not started even though in SSH the service status is definitely running - I have gone through the troubleshooting checklist here (http://www.postfix-book.com/debugging.html#d0e6) but can't get any further than section 2.1 as when running the host command (#host relay-test.mail-abuse.org), I get # -bash: host:command not found. I've gone further in the document but not found any issues...
When postfix was working properly (i.e. sending emails!), the plesk CP showed the service as started and all emails from the website were sending as normal. The mailq command is showing the messages stuck in the mailq and the maillog shows the following:- http://pastebin.centos.org/36446 - these are the latest few pages. To check the configuration and basic elements I have flushed the mailq (which shows a stack of messages waiting) and I have also spent a long time (2 weeks) reading up on the parameters that should be in main.cf and master.cf.I have found that when I 'telnet localhost 25' I get the following response...[root@s15397216]# telnet localhost 25Trying 127.0.0.1...Connected to localhost.Escape character is '^]'.
I'm a CS Major that wanted to experiment with Linux more. Great idea right?! Well, long story short, I have a HP Dv9815nr Entertainment Notebook PC with Vista pre-installed. I have 2 local SATA HDDs and installed Vista(250GB) and Fedora 12(160GB)(respectively). In order to make life simple for booting purposes, I partitioned the Vista drive to include a 3GB sector for the Fedora Boot partition, so that Grub would run properly.
I recently discovered Sun's VirtualBox (Open Source Virtualization software) and installed several flavors of linux inside of this application on the Vista Disk. Naturally, I installed Fedora 12 in the Virtual Box and reformatted the Linux drive (160GB + 3GB Boot partition).
Everything was fine and then I rebooted. Now I get a Grub error on boot. "Error 22 : partition not found". I would like to restore the Vista MBR using the Fedora 12 Live cd, but I can't repartition the Vista drive under the live installation.
Also, I extended the Vista partition to include the 3GB previously used for the Fedora Boot Sector.
I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista. Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.
So everytime i try and use the "yum" command. for some reason it doesn't go past this point: "loading mirror speeds from cached host files". i cleaned up the cache and rebuilt the OS again, and im still getting this problem. would this be a problem with my internet connection? I'm using CentOS 5.5.
use Fedora 15. I had installed driver for my ATI graphic card, as it was written in Fedora guide, then when I rebooted the system the bars and icons appeared with strange, changed colours (purple, green, etc). I've read that this happened because of the bad drivers, so I tried to fix it. Unfortunatelly because I'm Linux newbie and I'm also very nervous I deleted (using Fedora software manager) everything connectedtalyst from my system. Now when I try to start my computer, grub starts in text mode.My question is:What can I do? Do I have to reinstall my system or maybe someone knows how to fix it?I'm quite scared because now I can't launch not only Fedora but also Windows.(I'm writing from another computer
Code: fdisk -l Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 3724 29912998+ 83 Linux /dev/sda2 29256 30401 9205245 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda3 3725 4271 4393777+ 5 Extended /dev/sda4 * 4272 12104 62918572+ 83 Linux /dev/sda5 3725 4271 4393746 82 Linux swap / Solaris
I want ot install a new opensuse 11.4 as yest another OS. Due to the fact that I already have 4 sda partitions, I have to make some changes. What I am thinking about is to copy the sda2 (windows recovery) data to some folder etc (nevermind), then delete the sda2. Then I want to create a new primary partition for the new suse 11.4 and install it. What is worying me is the grub boot menu. I was planning to edit the new one (the opensuse 11.4), with old data.
Code: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux### title Desktop -- openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.5-0.1 root (hd0,3) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS542525K9SA00_080105BB0F00WDHE41DC-part4 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS542525K9SA00_080105$ initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop .....
Now my question is will the settings of (hda0,n), change due to the fact that I have deleted the sda2? I have a lot of unused space at the end of my disk and want to create a new "sda2" there.
If I use PHP or SFTP to delete or replace a file while it is being served will this cause the download to fail?If so is there anything I can do about this, the concern is for large files.
two months ago i bought a fujitsu siemens pc (pentium 4)and installed ubuntu 8.04. initially the computer was very slow and you couldnt run many applications at once, in the end it just becomes very slow and even hangs. it could take years to open open office word processor, so i thought it had a problem with the RAM. it initially had a RAM of 256MB, so i bought another 256MB and made it 512. it started to work very fast and it could open word so fast, i could run many applications at once until recently when it began to hang again even when there is only one application running, but it still is very fast, though it hangs often, is there a solution for this problem? i am oftenly forced to restart the machine and its boring.
Our mail server keeps on hanging after a while. This happened after there was a breakdown in electricity supply and the server room air conditioners stopped working for almost half a day. We are not sure whether this is a server hardware problem or a coincidence with a break-in attempt or malware activity.
Following are the message from the server log code...
I'm having problems booting up my Fedora 14 system. I see the Fedora splash screen (the one with the egg-like logo that colorizes as it loads); the logo fills up completely and then everything hangs - all I see is the egg logo, and nothing else is ever displayed. I also can't get to any of the ttys via the CTRL-F1 sequences.
I can boot into single user mode just fine. The install scripts all run just fine. The system itself is actually up an running, so I suspect this is either something in the KDE startup, or after init processes all of the start up scripts.
I'm assuming this isn't a startup script problem, because I see a "started XXX" message for every service in the rc.5 directory - in other words, all the startup scripts ran from rc.5.
So, how do I find out what is hanging? I'm not seeing anything in /var/log/messages, and pstree didn't tell me much about what init was doing.
I used to be able to follow inittab to see all the things it did at boot, but since inittab was stripped of everything it used to do a few releases ago, I don't know what init is doing anymore.
a few weeks ago i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC on which i was previously using Ubuntu 8.10. However after the installation of the new version, my machine keeps hanging all the time, like i can use it for 20 minutes and it hangs and completely freezes, so i have to force a shutdown in order to restart and it does so very often, i don't know where the problem really is. The PC is Pentium 4, 40GB hard disk, 512MB RAM, processor speed of 1.8 GHz.
Acer veriton 5000 pentium4 1.7mhz 2Gb ram. double booted with win2k.I had no trouble upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04. For some reason 9.04 would not upgrade to 9.10 so I installed from disc, with minor hics. Now works well but randomly hangs with no warning and I have to switch-off and restart to continue. Very annoying. I do not get any error alert it just hangs and when rebooted carries on quite unperturbed.
Additional info. on booting in recovery mode got following:: 754677 Render error detected eir??????
After doing this I can no longer log in, it just hangs on the brown screen after logging in... it also asks me for my password twice before authenticating?
I'm running a Debian installation from which I installed zomeminder using Synaptic Package manager. I fixed several issues with deprecated functions and other miscellaneous stuff. Finally have it working fairly well. However, not quite....zoneminder keeps hanging up as a review the captures in iceweasel. I click on the id field in the table and the event view shows up. After I review several, clicking the delete button on each to move forward Iceweasel hang up with the pinwheel spinning. If I completely close out iceweasel I can then start reviewing again. The following error message appears in the apache2/error.log.
